3 The first announcement of the festival was published in the Evening Herald on August 27th The idea was to travel by boat from Galway and back by bus. However, according to Paddy's diary, "the boat blew up, and all came by bus". At the pier head, there was to have been music. There wasn't! A taxi man, Mattie Burns, raced to Kinvara, and procured an accordian. The party then arrived at Paddy Burke's for their oysters. The festival was billed as "The Clarinbridge Oyster Festival". It was filmed by George Fleishman. A total of thirty four people attended - mostly Dubliners. The event was covered by George Burrows in "Times Pictorial" of September 11th 1954, "An Irishmans Diary" in the times, Good Cooking" by Monica Sheridan in the "Irish Times" of September 4th 1954, and by Benedict Kiely in the Irish Press of September 7th From this small beginning the Clarinbridge Oyster Festival has taken place on this site, on the grounds of Paddy Burkes. This world renowned event is held here annually since and attracts 1000 s of visitors from both Ireland and abroad flocking to the village to savour its friendly ambience and hospitality and to consume over 50,000 oysters..
