Volume 22, Issue 8 August 2013 There seems to be one month out of the year that I struggle with what to write for my article in the newsletter, and until today this was that month. July has been full of fun rides for Sharon and I. We spent the 4 th of July weekend in Arkansas and then the next weekend in OKC. What a great time we had in both places. In OKC we got there, and there was a strong chance of storms for Sunday so many decided to head home Saturday and beat them (the smart ones). Some of us decided to stay because we had rain suits or were just stubborn like me and said it wasn't going to rain(i was wrong). It was a good trip anyhow. This morning I rolled out the Wide Glide to head for Alefs 8th birthday bash. Sharon's trike is getting the 10k done, so with her on the back off we went. How could I be going without my radio, storage for everything, and there is a chance of rain? Heading toward Wichita I realized what a blast this was, no radio, no GPS, not storage for anything but 2 bungie cords and an extra pair of sunglasses in my windshield pouch. This is how I started my love for the HD motorcycle. Not all the fancy gadgets that I have become so spoiled by over the years. The open road, the wind in my face, my wife on the back, and the feeling of this little Harley just cruising through the countryside. Well, I will always enjoy my Ultra, but I think I will work harder to put more miles on my Wide Glide. Just getting back to the basics today was such a thrill. So as always, ride often and ride safe!! Marv McKown Director

PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 August Hello again, I hope all the members are getting out and enjoying their ride. I know I am. I was just looking at the calendar for this month, and the rides scheduled look to be fun. On the 3rd is a sack lunch ride to Marion Reservoir, kickstands up at 8 am with ice cream social to follow at Alefs when we get back. Then on the 24th we will have a ride to Herrington, KS for the soda fountain and museum, kickstands up at 9 am. I hope you can put one or both of these rides on your personal calendar. I know I am doing my best to be there! Both sound like a good time. Summer is here so remember to hydrate, be safe and enjoy the ride. I managed to get to Alefs for the 8th Birthday Bash for a little while, and was amazed at the number of people there! I would like to thank all the volunteers who set up, tore down and manned the booth during the day! It is great knowing that when a volunteer can t make it at the last minute, or is a little late getting there, that there are others who are willing to step up and fill in! I have said this before, but the members of our chapter are really great! The next event that I will need volunteers for is the Fall Open House on September the 14th. 4 August PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 I had 5 correct answers to last month s trivia question. The winner of a plethora of 30 th anniversary HOG merchandise was Shelly Rader. Our question: How many days did Vivian Bales travel on her cross-country trip? Answer: She travelled for 78 days and even met President Hoover. While Harley-Davidson did not officially sponsor her trip, they did provide her with two sweaters with the title The Enthusiast Girl on them and featured her on the cover of The Enthusiast. The company was also grateful for the good will she spread during her trip and Arthur Davidson called her The Georgia Peach. Vivian Bales Faison passed away on December 23, 2001 at the age of ninety-two. Learn more about Vivian Bales, the Enthusiast Girl, in the Clubs and Competition Gallery at the Harley-Davidson Museum. 6 August PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 ACTIVITIES Wow, one more month of summer and fall is here with the promise of cooler riding days! With fall rapidly approaching, it's time to think about our 2014 events calendar and suggestions for new rides, places to eat, and what special events you would like to see planned for next year. At the August chapter meeting we will have a "Dream'n Hog" present that needs to be fed with all kinds of ideas for next year. So let's stuff that HOG full from now through the remainder of the 2013 year! In addition, we will plan to do another chapter questionnaire on Survey Monkey which will come out in September with more to follow in the September newsletter on how to access the link. Now, on to our riding events planned for August...on August 5th there is a Sack Lunch Ride to Marion Reservoir, Alefs with kickstands 8AM. Bring your own sack lunch and beverage and plan to eat at the reservoir, then return to Alefs for ice cream and brownies. Our second riding event is the Herington Soda Fountain Ride on August 24th, Alefs, with kickstands 9AM. Visit the Boelling Pharmacy in Herington which includes a six stool fountain with back bar, mirror, and brass rail, then tour the museum. For those of you who like the Friday night meet, greet, and eats, we have the following scheduled: Boelling Pharmacy Soda Fountain, Herington Wamego Inn Wamego, KS August 2nd-Magoos in Wichita August 9th-Gambinos in Colwich August 16th-Susies in Eldorado August 23rd-RD's County Line in Mulvane *Meet at the 6:30PM. Looking ahead to September, put September 27 & 28 on your calendar for the Atchinson Ride weekend. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Wamego Inn, Wamego, KS, and ask for Harley Owners Group rate which is $69/nite. The deadline on the block is August 29th. The ride will leave from Alefs September 27th with kickstands 8AM. Darren and Big Dave are working on some great rides in that area of Kansas and fun things to do in Atchison. Before we forget, thank you Dan and Paula for allowing us to receive the flag from Joplin at the dealership on July 12th and being able to give us the time for a most inspiring ceremony. We appreciate your support so much! For all of you out on the rode in August, ride safe! See you all at the chapter meeting August 11th! Marian and Puddin ACTIVITIES

PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 August SAFETY CORNER Yes I am going to talk about hydration again with the temps in the 90 s to 100 s. If you read your last H.O.G. magazine and especially the article about riding in Baja then you will understand why I harp on this subject so much. Dehydration is deadly so again I am going to say it, Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol until you are done for the day. Mix sport drinks and water during your ride and of course drink until you pee clear. The next thing I want to talk about is awareness when you ride. You can t assume anything, whether the oncoming car will see you and stop or that the bike ahead is pulling out from the stop sign. Case in point, I am far from perfect and I do make mistakes. Fortunately, I have been able to walk away just feeling stupid. So I take these times as a learning experience. I am going to tell on myself. Over the Fourth of July weekend Barbara and I road to a place called the HUB just south of Harrison Arkansas. We had ridden there and rode a 200 mile route on the 4 th without problems. Jack Fries, John and Doreen Koch, and Theo and Shelly Rader joined us that evening. On the 5 th Jack, Shelly and Theo decided to ride to Memphis for some Blues so we decided to ride along partway with them since we were all going the same direction. We were headed to Conway Ark to visit Toad Suck Harley. The day was beautiful as we rode along Scenic 7, Highway 74 to Highway 123 known as the Arkansas Dragon then down to Highway 16 to Clinton Ark where we would head south to Conway and they would head on to Memphis. Everything was going great, beautiful scenery, twisty roads and a grass fire (not started by us). We stopped at an intersection to determine which direction to turn. Two things happened; first we stopped in a single file line instead of beside each other, my first error. Jack who was leading pulled out and headed down the road. Theo started to pull out and I thought he was continuing on down the road, I checked to my right for oncoming traffic not realizing that Theo had stopped again, he was just pulling up to see around a blind corner. I started to pull out and we bumped Theo and Shelly causing both bikes to fall in opposite directions. No one was hurt but my pride. The second mistake I made was I assumed Theo was moving on. What did I learn from this experience? Keep your distance from the rider in front of you even when stopped. Don t assume anything until you see it happen. When we have rider meetings and talk about safety there is a reason for this not just to hear ourselves talk and most important pay attention when you ride. Ride your own ride. HYDRATE Look Twice Save A Life Someone Important To Us Rides Ride Safe my Friends and keep the shiny side up. DAVID HYLE Safety Officer

August PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 New faces at Alefs FROM THE DEALER The Alefs Harley Davidson sales staff has been revamped! Come meet our new sales manager Paul Larsen. Our newest salesperson should be a familiar face to PTHOG as it is Tim McConnell. Brian Thimesch has been with us for a few months, joining Rick Miller and Elliot Funk on the sales floor. We have assembled an upbeat and positive sales staff that should make your buying experience wonderful. We had a blast at Alefs 8 th Birthday Bash! Thank you all for coming out and supporting us! Congratulations to the PTHOG members that made it into the 2014 Alefs Angels Calendar. Prairie Thunder had a very strong showing of nice bikes on display. It is great to see our members taking so much pride in their rides. Harley- Davidson 110 th in Milwaukee Harley-Davidson will be celebrating their 110 th Anniversary at the end of this month in Milwaukee. 110 years of American made motorcycles is something to celebrate and I am sure those that are going will have a great time and make lifetime memories. Ride safe and be aware when riding in such a crowded area. Way to Save Every time you spend $100 at Alefs H-D, we'll give you a gift card for $10! Spend $300 and receive (3) $10 gift cards and so on. Sorry, cards only awarded for MotorClothes and Parts & Accessories ALEFS ANGELS

PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 August Arkansas trip, July 2013 (BARBARA HYLE) David and I decided we were going to make a long weekend over the 4 th of July and head to Arkansas. We had heard about a motorcycle resort near Harrison and we wanted to go and check it out. We hadn t ridden in Arkansas before and so we decided to take advantage the holiday. We headed out on Wednesday the 3 rd after David got off work. We took US 166 through Arkansas City and Coffeyville and then I-44 into Joplin and then US 65 into Arkansas and Harrison. We wanted to get to our hotel that night but we didn t get to leave as early as we wanted so we got a room in Harrison. The morning of the 4 th we left our hotel and rode to the Hub. Come to find out it is only about 15 miles from Harrison but we would not have had an easy time finding it the night before if we had tried. We arrived at the Hub around 10am. We met Randall the owner when we rode up. Happy the dog also greeted us warmly. We got checked into our room, unloaded the bike and then Randall gave us some advice on a couple of routes to begin with and off we went. David decided we would take the Peel Ferry route that morning. We took Scenic 7 from the Hub through Harrison and then up to Peel on AR 125. We met the ferry that took us across Bull Shoals Lake. The ferry came about when Bull Shoals Lake was being created and AR 125 ended up underwater. Missouri and Arkansas decided to put a ferry where the road used to be. After we left the ferry we drove along AR 125 to US 160 with a stop in Forsyth MO for lunch. David s great grandparents had a store over 100 years ago in Forsyth, then on to Branson. We stopped at Branson Landing so we could visit the Denney s Harley Davidson on the Landing. While we were there we saw a great outdoor water show set to music and dropped some money at the Bass Pro store. It was time to head back to the Hub so we took the fast way back via US 65. It was a great day despite the warm temperatures. So glad we took those neck wraps. We got back to the Hub in time for dinner with Debbie, Randall and the rest of the guests staying there for the holiday. We were almost done eating when Jack Fries, Shelly and Theo Rader and Doreen and John Koch rode up. After dark Theo started a bonfire and we discussed our days and made plans for the next day. Friday the 5 th we all met at Scooters, the restaurant at the Hub. They have a pretty good breakfast at a reasonable price. David and I had decided that we wanted to head to Toad Suck Harley in Conway that day so we tagged along with Jack, Shelly and Theo as they were going that same direction on their way to Memphis. John and Doreen decided they would go their own way. We left the Hub and headed south towards Jasper on AR 7, we changed over to AR 74 and then over to AR 123. We traveled on some great roads with wonderful twisties and beautiful views. It was fun traveling with Jack, Shelly and Theo but we parted ways with them at Clinton AR. We went on to Conway and they headed east to Memphis. While we were at Toad Suck Harley we asked how they got their name. We were told that in the old days the steamboats used to come up the river and then would get stranded after the water went down. The captains and crew would sit around and drink waiting for the river to come back up and the locals were heard to say They suck on the bottle till they swell up like toads hence the name. After we visited the Harley dealership and bought our t-shirts we headed back to the Hub and dinner at Scooters. We had heard that they had excellent steaks and prime rib and judging by all the locals that were there when we got to the restaurant they were right. I got the rib eye and David the prime rib, both were great. A wonderful end to a great day. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

August PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 Arkansas trip, July 2013 (BARBARA HYLE) CONTINUED Saturday the 6 th started again at Scooters for breakfast and then we were off to ride the Pig Trail. We rode AR 7 to AR 74 west to AR 21 until we got to AR 23 then south to Turner Bend. We stopped there to buy our Pig Trail patches. We left Turner Bend and headed north on Scenic AR 23 known as the Pig Tail to Eureka Springs. The Pig Trail got its name because the fans of the Arkansas Razorbacks in Little Rock wanted a shortcut to Fayetteville. We wanted to visit both Pig Trail Harleys that day so we started with the one in Eureka Springs and then rode over to the main store in Rogers. We then headed back to Eureka Springs to do some sightseeing around town. It was very crowded so we didn t spend a lot of time in the historic area. We ve decided that we ll go back and spend a weekend in Eureka Springs. We had heard that Marv and Sharon and John and Doreen were in Eureka Springs so we hooked up with them for an hour or so before heading back towards the Hub. We stopped in Harrison for a late dinner at a small Italian restaurant called Roma. It was really good, we highly recommend it. We headed back to the Hub in the dark but it was ok this time because we knew where we were going. Sunday the 7 th it was time to head back home. We said goodbye to Randall and Happy and off we went. We decided to go home via Eureka Springs, Rogers and US 71. Once we got to Joplin we hopped on I-44 until we got to US 400 and we came home that way. We made rest stops in Parsons and Howard. When we arrived home we had put 1442 miles on the bike in 5 days. I was one tired puppy and glad to be off the bike.

August PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 ARKANSAS H.O.G. RALLY TRIP BY SUSAN LEE We had been looking forward to attending the Arkansas State HOG Rally at Hot Springs for a long time; we had been there before, about 10 years ago, for the same occasion, and had a wonderful time. I tried to get off work early on Wednesday (1 May), but one thing led to another, and we did not get to leave the house til about 5:30PM Late start, but we didn t have reservations any certain place that night, so thought we would just ride til we got tired or it got dark, and stop for the night. Tentative goal was to get through Tulsa, maybe stop just east of there. As we went across Highway 412 in Oklahoma, we could see, straight ahead of us, large black clouds building, with lots of lightning down through them pretty awesome to look at, if you are not riding right into them! We talked about heading either north or south at the next exit, to skirt around it, maybe go ahead and stop for the night. It wasn t too late yet, but we didn t want to be caught out riding after dark in the rain stopped to gas up at a quick stop in the middle of the highway, and someone pulled in from ahead of us, telling us about the large hail they had just come through, after stopping on the side of the road for the worst of it. That clinched it, we headed south (it was just starting to sprinkle on us as we left the station) to Cushing to find somewhere to stop. Found a Best Western right on the road as we came into town there, so stopped there Larry talked the guy at the desk into letting him keep the bike under the drive-thru check in area, and he even gave us a room just above there so we could look out at the bike! (An upgrade from what we paid for, as he said the only rooms like that were on the other end of the motel no charge for the upgrade). Nice guy! As we were riding south to Cushing, I reminded Larry that an old friend from high school lived there, Molly Payne, and last I knew she did a talk show on the local radio station there. On a whim, when we got checked in, I looked in the phone book and found her name so of course, gave her a call to see if she would come over to the motel for coffee or a drink. We were going next door to a deli to eat, and she was just sitting down to dinner at home. She agreed to come on over after dinner, so Larry and I went to the deli; it closed 5 minutes before we got there, so our first dinner out on our trip was a walk to a Sonic Drive-In a block down the street! Cold and windy, but we sat at a picnic table and ate our Sonic supper. Walked back to the motel and there Molly was, waiting for us! Turns out the guy that gave us the free upgrade was the motel manager and someone she knew! Molly and I talked for about an hour, catching up the many years since we had seen each other. Larry joined in too, said he didn t want to be rude and turn up the TV, but I know he just wanted to listen in! Molly invited me to be on her talk show the next AM if we could wait that long to leave on our journey but it was at 7:15AM, so not too late! She said I was the most interesting person she had on there in a long time, with living all over the place in the Air Force, even in Europe for 3 years, and my special job working for the Air Force Surgeon General now. A celebrity, and didn t even know it!

PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 August ARKANSAS H.O.G. RALLY TRIP BY SUSAN LEE CONTINUED It was a hoot, being on a talk show, albeit a very small AM station in a small town. Fun! Molly and I go way back; she used to play piano accompaniment for me on my sax all through high school in solo contests; we made a great duo, too! We pulled out, in a very fine mist for just a little while, headed east to Arkansas, and ended up riding down the old Route 66 for part of the trip. Eastern Oklahoma really is beautiful, this time of year, everything greening up; lots of interesting small business and farms along the way. We finally dropped down to I-40 and crossed into Arkansas at Ft Smith, then dropped south again. Stopped for gas and a bathroom break along the way, and the bathrooms were under renovation, so they had 5 porta-potties in front of the store. Had a nice chat with an old local guy about riding, he loved our bike! Must have been 90 years old. Sweet guy. Every little while, the clouds got darker and threatened rain, but we stayed just ahead or just behind it all the way to Hot Springs! We checked into our hotel, the Comfort Inn, turns out just up the road from the local Harley Davidson dealership. We scooted downtown to sign in and pick up our pre-registration packets, texted some PT HOG chapter friends and met up with them at the dealership for the free supper (one little bun with pulled pork on it and a little bag of chips) with Bill and Marian, Theo and Shelly and some others. We were tired from the long ride so settled into our room early for the night. It was cold and rainy most of the weekend, but they had a walking tour of lots of little shops planned, getting all the places to stamp your paper to enter a drawing found a few little treasures, and an awesome Italian Cream Cupcake to snack on! At least being in and out of stores kept us from getting too cold. That afternoon, Larry and some other chapter members played HOG Bingo, (some of our folks won big!) while I got the best deep tissue massage of my life at the spa in the host hotel. AWESOME!!! That evening some of us met up at the Brick Oven Grill (or something like that); food was good, as was the company, had to put 4 tables together to get all the PT HOG chapter friends together to eat! Then back to the host hotel/conference center for a concert by LAFUSO; pretty good sound!

August PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 22 Issue 8 ARKANSAS H.O.G. RALLY TRIP BY SUSAN LEE CONTINUED Saturday, the sun came out finally, but it was still pretty chilly. Larry and I went on a poker run, down south and east of Hot Springs, and had a wonderful ride. Beautiful countryside, and one little town had a nice museum, with special rooms of memorabilia from a Civil War battle fought at a nearby river; just happened to be a Civil War re-enactment weekend, so we got a special bonus. I personally loved the big barn out behind the museum with military vehicles from Civil War, WWII, Korean War,and Viet Nam, including several ambulances from the different wars. Both our poker hands stunk, but we had a good time, anyway, and that s what it s all about anyway. We got back in time to play HOG Bingo again, I won a $25 gift card to the H-D dealership in Ft Smith (future road trip, Larry says) I even entered my first tattoo contest, altho I did not win. The rally closing ceremonies were awesome, with police bikes participating in the retirement of the colors, with lights flashing as the flags were mounted on the back of the bikes to be carried out. Concert that night by Sammy Kershaw was awesome, I thought. Not the typical biker concert, and I was a little surprised so many stayed for the show. Afterwards, we joined some other PT HOG chapter friends in the host hotel bar, they had a really good band, with a cute lead singer (huh, Theo? Puddin?) Again, tables had to be pulled together to fit everyone I must say, as chapter newcomers, we have certainly felt welcome at all the activities, rides, etc. LOVE PRAIRIE THUNDER HOG CHAPTER! Awesome to be a part of this group! Sunday AM, we had to head out fairly early, to get on home; an uneventful ride, but long. Once again we found ourselves chasing/running from clouds and storms, but still did not get wet! What a great long weekend!
