Guests & Friends of the Club today: Notes: There were 7 Guests and/or Friends of the Club today. Ralph Jensen brought his wife, Dee, his daugther, Patty, his son-in-law, Dave and his granddaughter, Anna. We also had three potential new members in attendance: Danese Bardot, Norm May and Fred Ehrman. Steve Kuehl is the Bulletin Editor for the month of September. Norval Stephens is responsible for October. Danese Bardot has submitted her application for membership to our club. This will be posted in the bulletin for two weeks. Any comments or questions can be directed to Reese or the Board. Reese congratulated Jim Arie and three paramedics who were recently honored as local heroes at a Hoffman Estates retirement community for having saved the life of one of its residents during the summer. Reese will be going to Capitol Hill in February as a representative of Shelter Box USA. She will be lobbying our government for more support. Dick Hogan graciously volunteered to put together a fellowship event at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. The event would be on October 27th for "A Chorus Line." If we have 20 people (including guests/family or spouses) we can get the dinner package for $55/person. This includes a sit down meal and the show. Dick will get an invitation out and sign up sheet prepared for next week's meeting. Belinda Bauer reminded us that the Pet Adoption Event will be held at Citizen's Park this Sunday, October 3rd, from 1:00-4:00 pm. Belinda needs volunteers to drop off flyers to the local grade schools. Please contact Belinda if you can help on Thursday or Friday. Carol Beese is in for a slow recovery. She fractured her arm in 11 places and will not be very mobile until atleast November. She would appreciate visits or calls. Carl Walsh celebrated his 53rd birthday. I didn't ask his age, but he told us!! Norval Stephens thanked Reese and her husband, Steve, for hosting the Anniversary event at her home a couple weeks ago. Speaker/Program Summary: Anna Jacobsen, Ralph Jensen's granddaughter was our speaker today. She is a senior at BHS. She has been swimming on the varsity swim team all four years and is now co-captain. She holds 2 school records and is hoping to add a couple more this year. Last summer she made it to Junior Nationals. Anna has spent her last two summers coaching a local swim team. She plans to study chemistry in college. Her top two choices are Butler and UIC. In her free time, Anna likes to bake and read. Ralph and Dee should be very proud of Anna's poise and sense of humor (her athletic ability as well). This was a very good meeting thanks to the following Rotarians in attendance: Larry Barnett, Belinda Bauer, Paul Berlin, John Cox, Ron Dockery, John Gillett, Mike 1 of 7 10/3/10 1:47 PM

Our project number is W Chicago Rotarian climbs Mount Kilimanjaro by Reese Mates Friend,Rotarian, ShelterBox SRT and Eagle Scout Mark Dyer accepted a challenge with others that took him 18 months to prepare for. Father and son climb Kilimanjaro for ShelterBox USA 3 of 7 10/3/10 1:47 PM

4 Mark and his son, Eric with Kilimanjaro behind them. At over 19,000 feet above sea level, ShelterBox USA supporter, Mark Dyer looked out at the incredible view from the top of the highest freestanding mountain in the world and was proud he made the journey with his 17 year old son, Eric. The Dyers, residents of Elmhurst, IL, were joined by 10 other ShelterBox Response Team members, the volunteers that deliver aid to disaster survivors around the world, to raise funds and awareness for the organization. The goal was to raise a dollar for every foot of elevation of the Tanzanian mountain. By the end of their epic climb, the team exceeded their mark by raising more than $20,000. ShelterBox is an international relief organization which provides shelter, warmth and comfort with dignity to disaster survivors worldwide. Each iconic green box delivered/deployed/provided contains a family tent, means to purify water, a cook stove, a kitchen set, mosquito nets, tools and other essentials. "To be able to share this experience with my son and the ShelterBox crew was amazing," said Dyer who deployed to Africa twice in the last two years to deliver ShelterBoxes to disaster survivors. ShelterBox has provided shelter to more than 110,000 people and has responded to 38 disasters in Africa alone while providing shelter for more than a million people worldwide in its 10-year history. Before their ascent, the team spent a couple of days in the town of Moshi at the base of the mountain acclimatizing to conditions. During that time they worked with a local school handing out new textbooks bought with some of the funds raised in honor of the climb. 4 of 7 10/3/10 1:47 PM

5 Eric delivers a ShelterBox Children's Activity Pack to a student. "The books the children were using were so tattered, they were almost unusable," said Dyer. "The math and English books along with the ShelterBox children's activity pack will go a long way in that community. We even brought soccer balls and proceeded to lose at a game of football. It was a great day." Dyer and his son are no strangers to service. Both father and son received their Eagle Scout Award and have a dedication to helping others. The funds raised by the team mean that more than 20 ShelterBoxes will be sent in response to a disaster. The full team of climbers were as follows: Sharon O' Keefe and Chris Donald (both Newquay, England) Sean Jarvis and Steve Blunsdon (both St Agnes, England) Phil Duloy (Falmouth, England) Lizzie Treglown (Helston, England) Richard Mcsweeney (Hayle, England) Marc and Emily Eccles (both Truro, England) Dave Achtemichuk (Canada) Mark and Eric Dyer (USA) ShelterBox team top national fundraisers by Reese Mates Service Above Self: Six Rotarians Lead Humanitarian Fund for ShelterBox USA LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla., August 30, A team of volunteers from the greater Chicago area were among the top fundraisers in securing shelter and life-saving equipment for more than 305 families displaced by a disaster - placing this team as the leading team in the USA and one of the top 10 teams in the world. The team consists of 6 people. Representatives Donna Gulley, Dick Hattan, Andrew Kuby, Reese Mates, Ross Spencer and Cynthia Tomusiak have taken the ShelterBox message well beyond their home Rotary District. With the help of this team ShelterBox has become the largest Rotary Club project in the world and the premier aid organization to immediately address the need for dignified shelter following a disaster. In the last ten years, ShelterBox has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief, providing aid to survivors of over 140 disasters in more than 70 countries. In the last few months alone, ShelterBox has distributed aid to more than a quarter of a million people displaced after the Haiti earthquake which devastated the island nation. Concurrent to the Haiti response, ShelterBox has responded to 13 other disasters since January 2010 including the Pakistan and Brazil floods, earthquakes in Chile and Mexico and a volcano eruption in Guatemala. The charity sends aid in the form of iconic green ShelterBoxes which contain equipment essential to survival such 5 of 7 10/3/10 1:47 PM

6 as a family tent, mosquito nets, cooking equipment, water purification tools and a tool set among other items. This past year, Gulley and her team spearheaded the first Rotary District Matching grant, a task which came to fruition two months after the devastating Haiti earthquake. The grant was responsible for $122,000 or 122 ShelterBoxes. " Every time a box is sponsored, I sleep better knowing up to ten more people have shelter, warmth, dignity and comfort," said Gulley. "Multiply that time 122 and you will have an inkling of how I felt!" Gulley and the rest of her team worked hard to promote ShelterBox at Rotary Club meetings, public fairs, schools and during parades. " It takes a village, or a district, for our team to be identified as the top fundraising team for ShelterBox. It isn't me, Andy Kuby, or Ross Spencer that made this happen, it is all of the great Rotarians in the district that helped to provide shelter for more than 305 families," said Gulley. When asked, Gulley describes her fellow teammates with pride. According to Gulley, Kuby not only keeps the team organized but also fabricates anything from a parade display to a miniature cart to keep the team from lugging all of the box's weight. Spencer is also a passionate member of the team who, even though he wintered in Hilton Head last year, was still very active in the Chicago area for ShelterBox. While in Hilton Head, however, Spencer managed to recruit and train three new representatives for ShelterBox where there were no volunteers before. " It is through the work of individuals and teams such as this that ShelterBox is able to maintain a stock of boxes enabling them to respond to disaster immediately after it strikes," said Veronica Brandon Miller, executive director for ShelterBox USA. "ShelterBox extends its sincere thanks to these individuals for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to this project. " Individual tax-deductible donations to ShelterBox USA can be made at or by mailing a check to 8374 Market St. #203, Lakewood Ranch, FL For information or to make a contribution by phone, please call About ShelterBox Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox ( ) has provided shelter and dignity following over 140 disasters in more than 70 countries. ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each iconic green box contains a family tent, means to purify water and cook food, tools and other essentials. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.
