1 CALIFORNIA AISEKI KAI Volume 35, Issue 1 January 2017 Holiday Party! Our 27th Exhibition 35 years! Party Raffle Dues are Due January 25th Help set up at 5:30 Party begins at 6:00 Dinner at 6:30 Suiseki sale and Raffle after that!! Come on the 4th Wednesday, to celebrate the end of another amazing year and the beginning of a new one. Remember this is a potluck so bring a favorite dish to share and utensils with which to serve it. The club will provide all the soft drinks, plates, napkins, flatware, etc., but please bring your appetite and. Remember, this is our annual fundraiser. Please donate anything you think will be appreciated by your fellow club members and be ready to buy lots of raffle tickets. The raffle is a great way to help support all of our club activities. It is also a lot of fun! (You must be a member to participate in the club raffle.) And speaking of supporting our club activities.it is that time of year again... This is a request to you kind folks who get the hard copy of the newsletter who have a computer and could easily be e~subscribers to please rethink your membership needs. The more of you who are e~subscribers, the better for all. We hope you will decide to go green. Save a tree and our precious resources. (If you are saving the newsletter, you can always print it out yourself.) No matter what, we really appreciate your continued support. Thank you. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who participated in our Huntington exhibit last month. Your displays wowed the hundreds of visitors as well as our members. By the numbers, we had 37 participants who displayed about 130+ stones. 7 new members joined. A special hip-hip hooray to uber organizer Marge Blasingame who directed the setup and take down. And thanks to Mother Nature for holding off the rain until after Marge s worker s (almost everyone who displayed) took down the boxes, risers, stands and pipes and then folded and stowed the table coverings and backdrops. It took 3 trucks and a lot of people power to transport everything to our storage shed. Marge wants to be sure we thank Marty Hagbery, Buzz Barry, Jesse Krong and Paul Vasina who did the heavy lifting. I hear it was complete by 6 PM. That has got to be a record! Thanks to Jim Greaves and Don Kruger who spent a couple of days after the initial setup arranging the exhibit to perfection, piece by piece. How about those display labels? That was the extraordinary work of Uyen Truong. Thank you! Thanks to Linda Gill who directed the docents and to all of you who acted as docents/security and a very special tip the hat to Marty Hagbery who endured both cold and quite warm weather while standing outside directing guests to our display. We all owe a special thanks to The Huntington s Jim Folsom and Danielle Rudeen who make it easy for us! ~Larry Ragle January 25th fundraising note: There will be a special silent auction of stones from the Ralph Johnson Collection. Bring your check books! Chuck Barker offered up a swell idea: Use diapers to wrap your stones! They have adhesive tabs and they are more effective than newspaper and reusable. One can purchase these on the cheap at estate sales and thrift shops! Thanks for the tip!

4 PAGE 4 CALIFORNIA AISEKI KAI VOLUME 35, ISSUE 1 Tecopa Trip November 5~6 So. That was the weekend that was! Amazing! 39 Aiseki Kai members and a few of their canine friends travelled to a beautiful and desolate part of California known as Tecopa Hot Springs. After happy hour on Friday night, most of us enjoyed a friendly meal in the very local café, known as Pastels Bistro. So good! Saturday morning we ate at Pastels again and then we were off for the hunt in a rather impressive caravan following Marty Hagbery and Richard Aguirre. We think our first stop was just to make a point; that it is not easy to find good stones! We drove up the road and kaboom! Everyone seemed to be smiling, hauling stones back to their cars. Saturday night we celebrated with a grand potluck, adult beverages and as if the night couldn t get any better, we were entertained by a local band, Pablo Tecopa and Dusty Butter. Sunday we gathered in Shoshone and followed Marty and Richard into Chicago Valley.more stones and there was leftover pizza for lunch.

5 VOLUME 35, ISSUE 1 CALIFORNIA AISEKI KAI PAGE 5 As we have always said, if you didn t have fun, you just weren t trying; everyone was trying. We were joined by members from as far away as Chicago, Seattle, Oregon, New Mexico and the Fletchers flew in from New York!

6 PAGE 6 CALIFORNIA AISEKI KAI VOLUME 35, ISSUE 1 There were serious eats, drinks, the camaraderie we are famous for and music! Dancing, too! The menu was spectacular so I won t name names for fear of forgetting someone but you all know it was a feast. A local had a telescope for star gazing. Magical. Kudos to Richard for all his work making this trip a reality.
