Red Bird Report September 2018 Aahhh September, thy name is change. The first hint of Fall and the Trees of Toxaway begin to paint with vivid primary colors and every hue in between against the bright Carolina Blue Sky. The Families of Summer are beginning to dwindle down as school has started in many cities and towns all across our South. The hikers are still hiking, but in fewer numbers. The golf course, tennis courts and croquet lawns are still busy, but much less so. They now cater more to the weekenders. The longer term LTCA members wait for the afternoon when the facilities are much more unbusy and the pool has closed, but the lake is open. The first big event of the month is the September 1, Dam to Dam Swim. Always a challenge for those hardy souls and interested spectators swim well and stay safe. September is also the traditional Labor Day holiday, celebrated this year on Monday the 3 rd. We can expect many of our friends to be here at the lake for the long weekend. September is host to four days we should proudly fly our American Flag: September 3, Labor Day September 11, Patriot Day September 18, United States Air Force Birthday, 1947 September 21, POW/MIA recognition Day We celebrate two religious holidays this month; Rosh Hashanah on the 10 th and Yom Kippur on the 19 th. Additionally the month boasts Grandparents Day on the 9 th and the First Day of Autumn on September 22. Locally, the monthly Meet and Greet Social [LTMGCTS] will be hosted by: Lorie and Steve Delaney: 9/6 Mary Ann Frolik w/bob Hamilton and Alan McDonald: 9/13 Pat and Tom Roberts: 9/20 Louise Spencer w/ Les and Nancy Avera: 9/27 Music on the Mountain will be Saturday, September 15 and features the music of Brian Bobo. His Mom lives here on Seminole Way and is an avid golfer.

Continued from Page 1: There will be big do ins on the croquet lawns from the 19 th through the 23 rd with players of both National and International ranking vying for a championship. You are all invited to come and watch. Speaking of croquet, The Lake Toxaway Mallet Club concluded its formal play for the year with a championship series and has announced the singles champion as Grady Price and the doubles champs as the family team of Les and Nancy Avera congratulations. Your LTCA Board of Directors met for their monthly meeting on August 27 with discussions to keep your community as a first class place to live and enjoy. The Treasurer, Paul Goree reported that we are in excellent financial condition. Roads Chair, Bob Cowan is continuously working to improve the roads and keep them up to our standards. Grounds Chair, Jean Merritt is overseeing the two major projects we have working as well as keeping the existing pavilion up on its repair needs. Lake Chair, David Shuford is working with our Safety Chair, Bobby Weil to improve the lake safety and consider some revisions and additions to the rules for the lake. Member Services headed by Gil Tendler is working with his team including Steve Cooper who is working on a New Member Welcome Package. Meanwhile, Sandy Dillon will soon be calling upon you to recruit you for the board election of next year. Our Long Range Planning and Reserve Committee will be headed by Jane Hancock. The Architectural Review Board, as reported by the Board Liaison, Peter Fox has had a very large number of submissions this summer. From the SILLY DICTIONARY Pharmacist A helper on a farm Polarize What penguins see with Things I have learned: I have learned That no matter how good a friend is, they re going to hurt you once in a while, And you must learn to forgive them for that. I have learned: That it isn t always enough to be forgiven by others, Sometimes you must learn to forgive yourself. Always remember: You can do Well by doing Good Don Molitor SPECIAL FLAG APPRECIATION CEREMONY Please join us on Monday, September 3 at 10:00 AM at the Lake Toxaway Estates Main Entrance for the retirement of the old flag and the installation of our new flag.

The 43rd Annual Lake Toxaway Charities Sports Day and Dinner Dance Fund Raiser held at the Lake Toxaway Country Club on July 21, was a record success, again. Chip Brown, Co-Chair of Lake Toxaway Charities, announces that a record $329,000 (net proceeds) was raised! This represents a 36% increase over the record set in % of this $329,000 will go to support the 39 agencies that help the hungry, homeless, sexually abused women and their children, and the medically/educationally deprived ALL in Transylvania County. A record 326 participated in the Dinner Dance, 64 in Golf, 32 in croquet, and 20 in portions of the tennis. Thank you to all our sponsors, our community, our over 100 volunteers (especially Jeanette and Hank Schuyler, Jenny Renfroe, Jean Merritt, Doug Probst, and The Lake Toxaway Mallet Club), and the entire Lake Toxaway County Club Team for a job well done! We ARE making a significant difference in the lives of thousands of individuals in Transylvania County. Our community is generous and giving. Please Save the Date for The 44th Lake Toxaway Charities Annual Event is set for July 20,2019, at the Lake Toxaway Country Club. Many participants purchased and wore creative costumes for the Alice in Wonderland themed event. The Brevard Little Theater would graciously accept your costumes and use them for future performances. Please contact Sally Bennett, Brevard Little Theater Director, at , for drop off details or Lake Toxaway resident Sherry Minnich, at , 50 Raven Rock Vista, Lake Toxaway, for her drop off details.

HISTORIC TOXAWAY NEW SIGNAGE FOR OUR AREA A key priority of the Historic Toxaway Foundation (HTF) is to raise awareness of our community to visitors traveling through the area. In the past, visitors could easily pass through Toxaway without ever knowing they had been here! Led by board member Nory LeBrun, the Historic Toxaway Foundation has invested considerable time and resources over the past year to establish signage along the Highway 64 and 281 corridors. This has required obtaining the necessary approvals of both Transylvania County and State of North Carolina officials. Because our desired sign locations are on NC Scenic Byways and the Transylvania County Scenic Corridor, the approval process has been lengthy and options somewhat limited. Progress, however, is being made! The Historic Toxaway Foundation is pleased to update you on two exciting signage projects. Historic Toxaway Signs Two of these signs are now in place. An example, pictured below, is on the East side of NC 281 South on the Sapphire-Whitewater Community Center property at Walter McNeely Road. There is a second sign on Highway 64 West at Silversteen Road between Toxaway and Rosman. We expect to have a third sign up this fall on Highway 64 between the Transylvania/Jackson County line and Highway 281 South. We will update you and share a photo once the third sign is in place.

Transylvania County Tourism Development Authority Wayfinding Signs The Foundation has cooperated closely with the Transylvania Planning & Development Department and the Transylvania County Tourism Development Authority to make sure that Toxaway is listed on the county s recently established Wayfinding signs. At this point, two signs including Toxaway are in place. One is at the intersection of Highway 281 South and Highway 64. The other is at Highway 215 North and Highway 64 across from Headwaters Outfitters. We can expect to see more of these signs after completion of the road work on Highway 64 toward Brevard. Stay tuned for more updates! The LTCA office will be closed for Labor Day Monday, September 3rd If you have an emergency, the Allied Universal officer on duty can be reached at

Common Grounds Committee UPDATE Alex Smith and Company have done a remarkable job at the front entrance, despite our torrential downpours this past month. The new plantings are in place, as well as the handsome new fence. Native perennials now fill these beds, and will return again next year, diminishing the cost of annuals. We now have an irrigation system to keep what has been planted healthy, also reducing manpower cost of watering. Unfortunately, many of the existing boxwoods that had been transplanted were discovered to have Boxwood blight, which releases toxic spores in wet conditions. The positive aspect of having an experienced landscape architect now on board ensures the health of our investment. The soil will now be treated and the area behind the guard gate will soon be replenished. A reminder to all gardeners is to sterilize both utensils and shoes when working around boxwoods. The spores are prone to be activated in very wet conditions. We look forward to introducing plans for the additional 16 common areas. These will be maintained in the same excellent manner, as well as sporting native plants that do not need replacing.
