1 Red Bird Report June 2018 From the Broadway musical Carousel, June is bust en out all over. Indeed, it is bust en out here in our beautiful valley of Lake Toxaway. Friends and neighbors are returning, meeting and greeting with the LTMGCTS organized by Bob Cowan. We are all awaiting the new and improved common areas landscaping, thanks to the leadership of Leslie Brown. See the interesting and informative article by Leslie in this months Red Bird Report. We will be treated to a jazz concert by the Brevard Music Center scheduled for the 10 th and located at the clubhouse of the LTCC all are invited to attend this FREE concert but must reserve the limited tickets directly from the BMC at All are also invited to play in or attend the Transylvania Cup, fundraiser for the Transylvania Foundation to be held on June 9 at the Burlingame Country Club croquet lawns. For the golfers among us, the LTCC is hosting its member-member event on June 2 and 3. This is always a fun event and is fun to watch from your own back yard wherever possible. Be sure to mark on your calendar the date of June 16 for the LTCA Welcome Back BBQ event which is open to all residents and is enjoyed at our own Meadow Ridge pavilion at the top of the mountain. Be sure to pick up your tickets from the LTCA office located on Hwy 64. Lest we forget, June 17 is Fathers Day and June hosts two American Flag appreciation days: June 6 is the anniversary of D-day 1944 and June 14 is the United States Army birthday. Things I have learned: I have learned That you should leave loved ones with a loving word It may be the last time you see them. I have learned That the people you care about most in life Are taken from you too soon. You can do well by doing good! Don Molitor 1

3 Lake Toxaway Nature Park Update By: Paul Cooper We are making exciting progress! The Picnic Pavilion is under construction, which includes the water, sewer and electrical lines. The grading process has allowed us to increase the number of easily accessible parking places. The boulders and some play equipment are on site waiting for future installation. We CANNOT WAIT for our anticipated completion date, which should be towards the end of July or early August. Stay posted for more details! 3

5 Common Grounds Committee The Common Grounds Committee was formed in the endeavor to develop a cohesive design concept and overall vision for the Lake Toxaway community. By establishing a comprehensive standard, the landscape and natural beauty of the Estates will be enhanced and sustained. Alex Smith and Associates of Atlanta and Highlands was chosen after extensive research and has envisioned precisely what this landscape setting should echo. Many residents were given a preview of their talent at Christmas when they dressed the front entrance so beautifully! At this time of such great momentum, with numerous benchmark openings, the Board is moving forward towards the goal to achieve for Lake Toxaway the BEST that it can be. This overall vision for the community is ready and waiting to be implemented! 5

7 Use Caution While Driving or Walking A lot of residents have expressed concern about safety while driving, and safety while walking. Generally while walking, the rule is to walk against traffic, and in the same lane facing oncoming traffic. If you are walking, it is very helpful to safely step out of the travel lane off of the side of the road until the traffic passes by, especially if you are in a curve, and the driver has to swerve into the other lane to dodge you. If you are driving, please do not text or while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports the following: CȦ 'LL1EDUNIVERSAL There for you. Ten percent of fatal crashes, 15 percent of injury crashes, and 14 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2015 were reported as distraction-affected crashes. In 2015, there were 551 non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, and others) killed in distraction-affected crashes. There have been reports of near-misses from distracted drivers, and we hope that no one becomes a statistic from being distracted and running off of the road or into someone. Bears The bears have been roaming in the estates, but they have not been a problem to residents this year, as much as in the past. Due to all of the rain and the temperatures, there is plenty of food and vegetation for the bears to eat without having to come after your trash and bird feeders. They will however still smell the bird seed or trash and visit for a quick bite if they are hungry, so do not get complacent when carrying out the trash or storing seed on your porch. We still recommend placing refuse in a bear proof can or metal storage container, and if necessary, drape rags drenched in ammonia surrounding the bin to deter the bears from trying to get in the trash. Please see the next page for our most recent activity report... New Boat Officer Allied Universal is pleased to introduce our new boat patrol officer. He is Chris Pogue, and he has just recently retired from the NC Highway Patrol where he served for 21 years. Prior to that, he served 5 years in the US Marine Corp, and also worked for the Asheville Police Department. We are confident that he will be diligent in watching for reckless operation of boats, and safety issues on the lake. 7
