Chapter 1 : Sorry, this content is not available in your region. Recently Solved: The majority of these cold cases were solved in, or reached a resolution of conclusion in the past couple years. In fact, some of the cold case arrests on this list are so recent that the alleged criminals still await trial or sentencing. Copy Link Copied There are few things more tragic than when an investigation becomes a cold case. They want nothing more than to help out the victims and their families. A cold case is like having to admit defeat. For the living victims, their families, and the families of deceased victims, the case going cold is devastating. This is particularly true of super old cold cases. Before DNA evidence could be analyzed, many cases went unsolved because of the lack of eyewitnesses or other traceable physical evidence. A larger number of cold cases have been solved when DNA evidence is tested years later and matches DNA from a more recent case. Other cold cases get solved when the perpetrator is arrested for another crime and confesses. Some cold cases are solved years later by good old-fashioned detective work; one person working the case just never gave up. Here are some cold cases that were solved years later. Another method is testing the DNA from the crime scene with wider parameters rather than looking for an exact match. When investigators performed a familial DNA test, the sample matched a convicted felon and indicated a brother of his committed the crime. Investigators went to work and discovered two brothers. They tested one brother and he was not a match. Klaas had been assaulted and strangled on the way home and she died in the hospital a few days later. The investigators in this case also used the familial DNA testing in order to get a suspect in the case. They ran DNA from the crime scene through multiple law enforcement databases and got a result: After the Klaas murder, Troyer had gone on to commit several more assaults and he was actually in prison. He was shot by police years ago when trying to escape prison. The police were actually able to use a sample of spit on the sidewalk to identify the murderer in a case that was cold for about five years. Michelle Lozano, who was only seventeen years old, was abducted around Easter in Her body was found only a day after her disappearance. She had been assaulted before her murder. Her body was discovered by a major freeway about a month later. She too had been assaulted. Using familial DNA testing the police connected the murders to the Borjas family. The police did some digging in to the family and quickly identified Geovanni Borjas as their primary suspect. They began to tail Borjas, and when he spit on a public sidewalk, they collected the spit and tested the DNA against the DNA from the crime scene. It was a match and they were finally able to close this case! The best most detectives could hope for when investigating a murder was fingerprints. Green had been brutally shot, but there was no evidence they could use at the time found at the scene. Luckily, DNA evidence for the case was kept and almost thirty years later, investigators ran the DNA through law enforcement databases. In this case, they got a direct match â to someone who was already incarcerated. He said that he was on a killing spree and Green was just a random victim. The police confirmed that Johnson gave details of the crime that only the perpetrator would know, which closed this thirty year old case. At the time, there was very little usable evidence other than a few partial fingerprints on beer cans found in the motel room. With no leads, the case went cold for many years. The notes on the case said that Layne had met with a young man. When evidence from cold cases started being processed through new systems in, the case broke wide open. The fingerprints on the beer can were run through the system and a match to a recent DUI case popped up. The police picked him up and Reeves confessed. Stacy Littleton was arrested based on witness reports that he was involved in the murder. Though detectives were convinced that Littleton had committed the murder, without hard evidence the case went cold. One detective obsessively reviewed the crime scene photos and it paid off. Detectives found the glove and tested it for DNA and it matched the original suspect, Stacy Littleton. They re-interviewed the witnesses, who all remembered their previous testimony, and that combined with the DNA evidence was more than enough to bring a case against Littleton. Just hours before, Bowdoin had dinner with her family and went out for drinks with friends. The case went cold and stayed that way for over twenty years, until investigators were able to match DNA from the crime scene to a man who was in prison, Clarence Wayne Dixon. Dixon had committed multiple other assaults in the following years. In he was imprisoned for Page 1

assaulting a woman and remained in prison since then. When he was tried for the murder of Bowdoin, he was convicted and sentenced to death. Page 2

Chapter 2 : Project: Cold Case â Because one unsolved homicide is too many. Announcing the solving of the Christine Franke cold case from, Orlando Police chief Orlando Rolón, Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer, detectives and family members gather for a press conference at. Police crack year-old murder case Still, no suspect could be found. Read More She had feared over the years that an arrest would never come. In court on Monday, Miller was given no bond and his next hearing was scheduled for July 19, according to online court records. CNN was not able to reach his attorney. Police connected him to the homicide by using DNA from the scene of the murder and from the taunting messages, and inputting them into a genealogical database. That led investigators to two men: Miller and his brother, according to a probable cause affidavit. The cold case is one of several that have been solved in recent months because of advances in genealogy and DNA technology. In this case and in the Golden State Killer case, investigators had DNA evidence but could not match it to a specific person using state or national databases. But the growth of genealogical companies, where people enter their own DNA profiles, has allowed investigators to connect suspect DNA to an extended family match. That has helped police to narrow down the list of suspects to a much smaller number and allow targeted investigations. Her body was found three days later about 20 miles away in a rural area, the FBI said. Police launched a search but could not find a suspect. But two years later, a message scrawled in pencil or crayon appeared on a barn door not far from where her body was found, the FBI said. Fourteen years after that, four taunting notes were found at various Fort Wayne residences, including several on bicycles that young girls left in their yards, the FBI said. The DNA from those condoms was determined to be consistent with the profile developed from the underwear of Tinsley, the probable cause affidavit said. But then the killer went silent. In, the FBI joined in the search and called it "highly solvable," but no major breaks in the case came. Police used free genealogy database to track Golden State Killer suspect, investigator says The testing was able to narrow down the suspects in the case to Miller and his brother on July 2, the affidavit says. Once the match was established, authorities approached Miller at his residence in Grabill, Indiana. When asked why he thought police wanted to talk to him, Miller said "April Tinsley," the affidavit reads. In the police interview, Miller admitted that he abducted April in, raped her and then choked her to death, the affidavit says. He also admitted that he had sex with her deceased body and then dumped her body, the affidavit says. Page 3

Chapter 3 : DNA hit solves cold-case killing of Righteous Brothers singerâ s ex-wife Over the years, NIJ has funded the examination of "cold cases" across the country through its Solving Cold Cases with DNA program. The funding helps police departments identify, review, investigate and analyze violent crime cold cases that could be solved through DNA analysis. The work for the cases spotlighted in this article may or may not have been performed by Sorenson Forensics. Thankfully, advances in DNA technology give law enforcement a huge boost in their ability to resolve cases that reached a dead end and then were reluctantly put on ice. Every day media reports how DNA forensic testing has heated up a cold case and allowed investigators to nab a suspect at last! Direct from newsrooms all over the country and around the world, here are the Top 5 Cold Cases for the last month. Cold Case 5, New Mexico: So was another man, Albert Meat, The two men were apparently acquainted and were trying to get some sleep in the early morning hours of December 4. According to police, Resendez became enraged when Meat kept him awake and Resendez allegedly stabbed the second man to death. At the time of the murder, leads ran cold. Albuquerque PD reopened the case recently. Witness interviews, along with DNA evidence, were enough to bring about murder charges, and Resendez was extradited to New Mexico from Arizona. Interestingly, in Arizona last month, Resendez was found not guilty of second-degree murder in a different cold case going back 34 years. A trial date has not yet been set. A mom puts her 8-year-old girl to bed one evening in and never sees her again. Unfortunately, the leads soon run cold and her body is never found. Fast-forward 18 years and the cold case is reopened by a new local forensics team armed with DNA-analysis capabilities. Investigators collect 17 DNA samples from a pool of people associated with the case and get a match! In, then year-old Gerson Salmeron-Diaz was apprehended as he attempted to smuggle pounds of marijuana from his native Mexico into Arizona. DNA Evidence is Key This case shows that in the absence of any witnesses or other types of forensic evidence, a DNA sample alone may be enough to bring about murder charges. In, year-old Gloria Dickinson was strangled to death in a downtown Augusta hotel. There were no leads in the case at the time and it nearly immediately went cold. In April,, 25 years after the murder, investigators discovered a match between the DNA sample taken decades earlier and Vincent Maurice Hampton, who was in jail for other crimes. Modern DNA analysis methodology is what made this discovery possibleâ an advantage police did not have in Hampton has a violent history, with charges of aggravated assault, weapons violations, and making terroristic threats and acts. He was charged with the murder of Gloria Dickinson on December 3, Suspect Behind Bars â 30 Years Later In, an 8-year-old Billings girl was brutally raped and threatened during a home invasion. The girl immediately told her family, and a rape kit was completed. Jimmy Ray Bromguard was charged and convicted based on evidence from a now-disproved forensic analysis method and served 15 years. Bromguard was exonerated for the crime in based on more reliable DNA testing, and the case became a cold one. As part of the agreement, he submitted a DNA sample to law enforcement. That sample yielded a match to the DNA evidence collected at the crime scene. It took 10 months for law enforcement to collect more evidence, including witness testimony that Tipton was in the Billings area at the time of the rape. In November,, Tipton was charged with three felony sexual assault charges. We also assist officers of the court in individual criminal cases and offer comprehensive forensic DNA services to private-industry clients. Gannett Satellite Information Network, Inc. 5 Chapter 4 : 12 Shocking Cold Cases Finally Solved TheTalko Police are harnessing consumer DNA sites to solve old murders, which could spur a massive clearing of unsolved crimes. It is the fifth cold case solved by Parabon and their researcher, CeCe. Enter the terms you wish to search for. Bite marks covered both of her exposed breasts and a shoelace, which had been used to strangle her, was still tied around her neck. Suspects were considered, but no lead panned out, and more than two decades passed without a conclusion in sight. Diligent investigative work, advances in technology and forensics and an old newspaper editorial led the Syracuse Police, New York State Police and prosecutors to conclude Stanislaw Maciag had murdered Nauman after picking her up on a quiet road while she fought with her boyfriend. Gavreau was angry with Nauman for engaging in sex work and for smoking crack cocaine with other people, Carney said. The pair reunited that night and Nauman was last seen with Gavreau, who told police they were separated once again when Nauman got in the car with an unknown man. He was also arrested and charged with the murder of Kenneth Martin, who was found on a sidewalk dead with blows to the back of his head in Gavreau wore a size 11 shoe. In, fingernail scrapings taken from Nauman were able to produce a DNA mixture belonging to an unknown man. They came across an editorial published in the Daily Gazette about the death of Phyllis Harvey, whose badly decomposed body was found on an upstairs porch on March 17, The year-old woman, who also turned to sex work to support her addiction to heroin and alcohol, had been reported missing the year before. At the time, Maciag was on probation for sexually assaulting a woman he promised to drive from Schenectady to Glenville. He pleaded guilty on Aug. He was sentenced to one to three years in prison for failing to report his residence change, while police built a case against him for the murder of Harvey. On April 7,, Maciag was found dead in his cell. He had hanged himself with a bedsheet. His bite was also consistent with the marks left on Nauman. Gavreau also positively identified him as the man with whom Nauman left. Maciag immigrated to the United States from Poland and moved to Schenectady in Carney said investigators have contacted authorities in Poland, as well as other places in the U. The closing of the case comes as a bittersweet resolution for those who had long hoped for closure and who know others who would have been happy to see so many questions answered. Years after he retired, Det. Roy Edwardson met with police about cold cases that officers believed may be solvable. Page 5

Chapter 5 : Government Uses Public DNA Database To Solve Murder Cold Case â CNM Newz Could your DNA help solve a cold case? Genetic genealogy, a new frontier in criminology, uses DNA to crack cold cases. Would you have a problem if yours were used? DNA was recovered and a number of men were investigated but years passed and no one was arrested -- until June Six cold cases were solved this year through DNA and genetic genealogy -- a turning point for crime-solving in the country, experts say. Through genetic genealogy, detectives can cast a wide net, searching distant relatives of an unknown suspect by analyzing the DNA submitted voluntarily to a genetic genealogy database, CeCe Moore, chief genetic genealogist with Parabon NanoLabs, a DNA tech lab that has worked with law enforcement, told ABC News. This allows police to create a much larger family tree than using law enforcement databases like CODIS, in which an exact match is needed in most states, Moore said. We need somebody from their family to have tested in order to resolve these cases. Moore was not involved in the genealogy work for this case. The "Golden State Killer" was believed to have committed 12 murders, at least 50 rapes and multiple home burglaries throughout California in the s and s. His last known crime was in The crimes spanned 10 counties. One of those counties was Contra Costa, where recently retired investigator Paul Holes led the charge to use genealogy to find the killer, said Schubert. Holes spent nearly 25 years on this case, she said. Investigators narrowed the search based on age, location and other characteristics, leading them to year-old Joseph DeAngelo. Those who participate in DNA testing websites "are doing it for the purposes of genealogy, family history and in some cases finding their biological family," Moore said. Before the "Golden State Killer" suspect was arrested, for "most it never even occurred to them [that] their DNA might be used to identify a serial killer or any sort of perpetrator. DeAngelo has been charged with 12 counts of murder spanning four counties. He has not entered a plea. Moore and Parabon NanoLabs were involved in this case. She had been beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted, prosecutors said. In May investigators surreptitiously took DNA from gum and a water bottle Rowe had used while DJing at an elementary school, prosecutors said. We were out of them. Rowe, 49, was arrested in June and charged with criminal homicide, prosecutors said. He has not entered a plea, prosecutors said. Michella was sexually assaulted and killed at a Tacoma, Washington, park on March 26, Unknown DNA was recovered and a number of men were investigated but the case turned cold. Investigators then incorporated traditional genealogy to make a family tree from information on public websites, Lindquist said. That allowed police to identify two brothers -- who lived in the area in -- as possible suspects, police said. On June 5, a detective tracking year-old Gary Hartman took a discarded napkin he had used at a restaurant and submitted it to the state crime lab for testing, officials said. Moore and Parabon NanoLabs were also involved in this case. On June 20, Hartman was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape, police said. He has entered a plea of not guilty. Tacoma Police Chief Donald Ramsdell at a news conference called the arrest a "great example" of "advancements in DNA identification and computer modeling combined with tried and true police techniques. Eight-year-old April Tinsley was found dead in an Indiana ditch in April She died of asphyxiation with indications of sexual assault, according to the probable cause affidavit. DNA was recovered from her underwear. In, officers found writing on a local barn from the suspected killer, saying, "I kill 8 year old April M Tinsley did you find her other shoe haha I will kill agin [sic]," according to the court document. Police pursued genetic DNA testing this year in the decades-old cold case and, in July, the DNA was narrowed to two brothers, including year-old John Miller, the documents said. Police conducted surveillance and collected trash, including three used condoms from Miller, according to the probable cause affidavit. DNA from the condoms was consistent with the condoms recovered in as well as the DNA from the crime scene, the probable cause affidavit said. Miller allegedly admitted to abducting April, raping her and choking her to death, saying it took about 10 minutes for her to die, the probable cause affidavit said. Miller was charged with murder and child molesting and has entered a plea of not guilty. Ron Galaviz said at a news conference Tuesday. They did it and we got him. But the use of genetic genealogy has already drawn criticism from some attorneys and civil liberties advocates who say it unfairly gives up the privacy of law-abiding people because of their family members. Those Page 6

companies, however, do allow users to download their raw data. To District Attorney Greg Totten of Ventura County, where the DNA of the unknown "Golden State Killer" was first retrieved from the double murder, "the bottom line here is we have brought a serial killer, serial rapist and a dangerous predator to justice as a result of that. So perhaps the most gratifying aspect of this case was we could finally begin the healing process and the closure process for the countless victims that this individual had preyed upon.
