It is said that no matter how smart a criminal is, he still leaves a faint trail that leads others to him. And yet, there have been incidents of murders where the gruesome crimes have gone unsolved, and with a faint aura of folklore, become mysteries. 2 Black Dahlia was the nickname given to Elizabeth Short after her gruesome murder that arrested a lot of attention. The naked body of the young woman was found on January 15, 1947 in an open field in Los Angeles. The body was slain in two in the torso and the face was ripped from the ends of the mouth to the ends of the ears. The brutal murder made a lot of buzz in the the media and whenever it seemed that the attention of the society was being diverted from the murder, someone would come up with a claim that he or she was the murderer. Over the years more than 50 men and women have claimed to be the killer of the young lady just because of the sheer fame that revolves around the murder. The real killer and his/her motive, however remains in dark till date and the crime is one of the oldest murder mysteries in LA. Stoneman, Calcutta (1989)

3 A serial killer dubbed as The Stoneman by the newspapers haunted the streets of Calcutta in The killer murdered thirteen people in six months. Unsuspecting homeless people were his victims. The killer used large stones as heavy as 30 kilograms to smash the heads of the victims and their lives. The murders stopped as suddenly as they begun but the police could not arrest the murderer and the case remains a mystery. Hall Mills Murder, New Jersey (1922)

4 On September 16, 1922 the dead bodies of Mrs. Eleanor Mills and Edward Hall were found in a field in New Jersey. Hall was a priest while Mills was a member of his choir. The bodies were covered in explicit love letters that Hall and Mills had written to each other which explained their illicit affair. The police created a lot of confusion at the crime scene which gave the onlookers a chance to interfere and most of the important evidence was therefore lost. 5 On March 31, 1922 six people in the Gruber family including their maid were brutally chopped with a mattock in a farmstead in Hinterkaifeck. Six months prior to this incident, one maid of the house had left the job claiming that the place was haunted. A few days before the incident, Old Mr. Gruber had also claimed that he saw footprints around his house and heard some in the attic as well. The investigators believed that the victims had walked in the barn themselves where they were chopped. More than one hundred arrests were made but no one was ever charged with the murders. 6 On December 28, 1956, Barbara and Patricia Grimes, aged 15 and 13 respectively, left their home for a movie and never returned. They were last seen at the theatre at 9:30 pm. When the girls had returned home by 2:30 in the morning, a missing case was reported and the search for the girls became so huge that even Elvis Presley issued a statement that said: If you are good Presley fans, you will go home and ease your mother's worries. On January 22, 1957 however, the naked dead bodies of the girls were found at Willow Springs. Barbara's body showed evidence of sexual intercourse but there were no signs of molestation. A number of suspects were quizzed but none was found guilty and the death of the Presley fans therefore remains a mystery. Villisca Axe Murders, Villisca (1912)

7 On June 9, 1912, six members of the Moore family in Villisca and two guests of theirs were found dead in the Moores house. Six of the dead were children aged 11 and below. The murderer used an axe for the crime. 8 Between 1968 to 1985 the streets of Florence were terrorized by a murderer or murderers who killed 16 people, most of whom were couples. In all the murders the murder weapon used was a.22 Beretta. Four local men were suspected and held but none of them were found guilty. The killer operated through a period of seventeen years but could never be found. Cleveland Torso Murderer, Cleveland ( ) Also known as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, this serial killer is said to have killed 12 people but the police believe he might have butchered much more people. The murderer used to cut up the victims in halves from their torsos and many a times take off their heads which earned him the title. Most of the bodies were found an year or more after the crime and most of the male victims were never identified. 9 Between 1918 to 1919, the city of New Orleans was terrorized by a serial killer who used an axe to kill his victims throughout the city and the surrounding areas. On March 13, 1919, a letter was published in the newspaper by someone that said : 'I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the Axeman. When I see fit, I shall come and claim other victims. I alone know whom they shall be. I shall leave no clue except my bloody axe, besmeared with blood and brains of he whom I have sent below to keep me company.' The sender of the letter was never found and nor was the the killer of eight people in the area. Texarkana Moonlight Murders, Texarkana (1946)

10 The Texarkana Moonlight Murders were committed by an unknown person nicknamed as 'The Phantom Slayer'. It was believed that this person attacked people when it was full moon, which was just a fable weaved around the mystery. The killer was dreaded so much that when the sun went down, people entirely shut themselves indoors and no activity took place anywhere in the area. The killer was however never found in spite of throwing him baits to catch and therefore the case remains unsolved. The Zodiac Killer, California (1969)

11 The Zodiac Killer, which was this serial killers self-thrust title, was a serial killer in the late 1960s and operated until the early 1970s in Northern California. In letters sent to newspapers, the Zodiac Killer claimed that he had killed 37 people, but only 5 murders were identified as his job by the police. In his correspondence with newspapers, the murderer sent 4 cryptograms in which he is said to have disclosed his motive behind the murders. Only one of the cryptograms was however decoded and it read : 'I like killing people because it so much fun, it is more fun than killing wild game in the forest because man is the most dangerous animal of all, to kill something gives me the most thrilling experience it is even more than getting your rocks off with a girl. The best part of it is that when I die I will reborn in paradise and they I have killed will become my slaves. I will not give you my name because you will try to slow down or atop my collection of slaves for my afterlife. The killer used an unusual sign to mark his murders. 12 Also known as the Doodler, this serial killer created a havoc in the gay community of San Fran with his killing spree. he met his victims in gay nightclubs or bars from where he picked them up for sex. He was called the doodler because of his habit of sketching his victims before having sex with them. The victims would be stabbed to death after that. Three of the victims who survived the attack however refused to testify against the killer in the court as it would uncover that they were gay. The killer therefore remained unidentified and no arrests were ever made.
