1 1 Promoting the building and operation of radio controlled models, and the public acceptance and good will towards the sport/hobby. Our main goal is to have fun and enjoy the challenge of safely flying radio control models. 16 year AMA Gold Leader Club December 2018 Volume 25 Issue 12 Next Club Meeting is Tuesday, December 11 th, 6:30 PM at Alfy s Pizza on RT 2 in Monroe (See page 9 for a map). December 8 th 3:00 to 6:00 At the Camp Pigott lodge. Our White Elephant Gift limit is: $15. This is a great event and family, guests, significant others, etc. are invited to join us. As in the past, a gift exchange will be held. Pilots are encouraged to bring a gift related to our hobby. Co-pilots, ie. wives/significant others are encouraged to bring a wrapped gift to exchange also. The December meeting is when we hold our club officer elections. 2 (President s Message continued from page 1) All board positions are open and nominations will still be accepted until the vote is held. The meeting will, as usual be full of excitement and great comradery. I look forward to seeing everyone. Come to the club meeting and share your ideas for future field enhancements and activities. I would like to remind everyone that we are super lucky to live in Washington and have weather that allows us to fly pretty much all year. Our field is in good shape and is ready for the Freeze-in on January 5 th, so get your cold weather gear ready for our annual kickoff event. We will have the burn barrels ready to keep us warm and pizza and beverages later. Start time 10:00 AM until usually 2:00 PM. Hope to see you there! See you at the field, Mark Weeks BBMAC President Buzzard Droppings December (Continued from page 1) Treasurer We are in good financial standing. $1600 was paid out for the container that now calls Hanners Memorial Field it s home. Safety Officer Things are really going well on the Safety Front no issues. Keep in mind as we hit the colder months to dress appropriately. It s easier to over dress and shed as needed compared to not being prepared, making it an uncomfortable outing. Field Manager Jay and Bryan took receipt of a 40 container for the Club a couple weeks ago. It s set up back behind the tree hill side area. It needs some roof and floor repairs but they deemed it worthy of the $1600 price tag they bartered for. Currently there is a blue tarp over it due to some roof leaks that need repair. Jay and Bryan are working on an access ramp to start moving the Club s belonging from barn to it. Jay and Bryan have also been working on the car track trailer floor to use it as a driver s stand. Work continues Newsletter Editor Hard copies available, always interested in pics and articles. Webmaster Input has been slow. Keep in mind that the website is seen by anyone on the internet, let s keep the Club image looking as great and active as it really is. OLD BUSINESS Tuesday, October 10, President signed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 into law. Although not perfect for us, an ongoing effort is still being made by the AMA, now finally recognized as a community-based organization. We are to follow the AMA rules as usual. The Budget was reviewed for 2019, voted on and approved. Dues will remain at $90 for We might have to wait until next spring to buy a shed or container, it is uncertain at this time. With that in mind we will continue to use the barn, be careful, its showing its age. The Combat event wasn t a total failure. It showed that many engines aren t up to snuff. It was suggested that next spring there be an engine clinic for members to attend and practice setting up properly for good results. We will notify everyone when that is set up. October starts the nomination process for Executive Board seats. Nominations were as follows [in the November newsletter and website, also the same as our meeting in November detailed below Ed.]. NEW BUSINESS President Mark Weeks had made mention of the Scouts and the use of their excavator. Big shout out to them and a grateful acknowledgement that (Continued on page 3)
3 (Continued from page 2) they help make us (Club) successful. Thanks to Ron Rueter for running the excavator all day, moving and leveling a large area where the container sets now. Chet reminded that Mark ran the excavator quite a bit Monday to finish up some areas and further finesse the area. Jay and Bryan are working on the trailers and soon the Club will have the opportunity to offer suggestions and wishes for the container. It has been suggested to move the porta-potties south near the same area to eliminate the possibility of damage due to the aging barn pieces falling (or walls). Bryan reported that he and Jay went to the Lodge and the container was really visible and that will lead to painting it. Chet suggested painting trees on it like the cities do with water tanks and Don Bailey has experience in that department. He volunteered to paint a mural to allow it to set into the scheme of the area. Our Annual Christmas Party is December 8, 3:00 to 6:00pm at the Camp Pigott Lodge. As the time grows near Chet will send out an invitation and directions to it. As always, there is a voluntary gift exchange. Woman brings a woman gift, and Guy brings a guy gift. $15 price limit is recommended. Mark mentioned that he wished he could have made the night fly, heard it was a huge success and the weather was very good for a November day/evening. Ron Swift announced that the NWMH Expo will be 2 days this year, January 26 and 27, A motion was made, seconded and passed to have the Club purchase a $50 Club Booth for the event. Ron said the Club gets free swap meet tables for the use of the Buzzards name on the event. Chet brought up the idea of rewarding the Camp Rangers for all the help they offer weather offering machines (excavator, tractor, mower, lawn sprinklers, etc.). A motion was made, seconded and unanimously passed to come up with a gift. Ron Swift will pick something up for the Christmas Party. Big Thanks to Jay Wellan for the donation of ¾ plywood just in time for the container floor repairs and future needs. There has been some talk about the increasing cost of Glow Fuel and the dwindling supplies. Hobby Town in Redmond has Omega 10% for $22.99 and 15% for Buzzard Droppings December Its cost have gone up a bit and will most likely go higher. Get some while you can. November Nomination brought the following. President Mark Weeks Vice President Vince Bell Treasurer Ron Swift, Vaughan Houger Safety Officer Don Bailey Secretary Chet Blake Special Service Award Mark Weeks, Team of Bryan Reightley and Jay Bell The nominations will continue at the December 11 th meeting then followed with the vote. There is still time to step up and throw your hat in for an office. PROGRAM Don Bailey brought an attic find that was in sad shape. It is a model of a 1939 Power House free flight plane that he converted to 3 channel RC aircraft sporting a Magnum.52 Four Stroke. Transparent yellow and red covering [Hobby King for around $10.00 and easy to use!] made this beauty stand out. You can see it on the Club s Face Book Page. Ron Rueter demonstrated the need and process to repair R/C car bodies using self-stick plaster mesh and Goop. He also uses metallic flue self-adhesive flue tape to line the inside of wear areas like where the body pins rub the collars and wheel wear. That addition of flue tape has virtually stopped the wearing off of paint (cars are painted inside) and wearing through from tire rubs, etc. ANNOUNCEMENTS Reminder that next meeting Ron will have sign-up sheets for the NWMH Expo ADJOURNMENT 7:44pm Respectfully Submitted by Chet Blake 3
4 4 Don Bailey It s what you can t see that can hurt you I work in a small, relatively unventilated shop. Actually, my shop is the downstairs family room in my house (my wife owns the entire upstairs fair trade if you ask me!). Occasionally, I go through my shop and do a thorough cleaning dusting and sweeping and vacuuming, and generally tossing all the detritus I no longer want or need. It feels good to be able to clean up and start fresh now and then, and it s amazing how much stuff you run across that you forgot you had. But scooping up the stuff you can see is one thing it s the nearly invisible micro-stuff that can get in your nose and eyes and lungs, and in your radio gear and other electronics, that can do the most damage. Building model airplanes often requires a good share of sanding. When I sand wood, I am more likely than not to grab a particle mask, depending on how much dust I expect to generate. It is a bit annoying to not be able to blow the dust away while I work, but this is actually a good thing, as it keeps the dust from getting airborne and dissipating throughout the entire room. Rather than blowing the dust away, I try to knock it down onto the surface of my workbench, so that it can be swept into the garbage can with a small whisk broom. On a good project, it is astonishing to see the piles of balsa dust that can accumulate! In addition to a particle mask, I have a large fan-driven air filter that runs for an hour during the night while the rest of the house is asleep. It is capable of cycling the entire room twice over during that time, and the difference in collected dust in my shop is remarkable. I also run it during an aggressive sanding session, if I feel it is needed. I have heard of guys developing allergies to balsa dust after too many years of exposure. I can t think of a worse fate! Another invisible aggravant is organic chemicals, such as solvents and other toxic compounds. Here, a particle mask is not so effective. Barring a fresh-air respirator (and I venture to guess not many of us have one of those in our shop), our best recourse is lots of fresh air, as in the back patio or open garage. I do all my doping and painting on the front driveway which means I do it during the warm summer months. I try to time my projects so that all the finish work can happen at the end of the building season, when the days are longer and more temperate. When using epoxy, I like to open my window above the workbench, and run a fan that exhausts to the outside. Even in the cold months of winter, this is an effective way of drawing warm interior air to the outside, so the room doesn t get too cold, while the toxic fumes are carried safely away. I used to work part-time at an auto body repair shop while I was in school. The career mechanics who I worked with all admitted that the job was almost inevitably bad for the health, due to so much exposure to solvents. I used to watch them grab a dripping rag of reducer with their bare hands and wipe down a fender in preparation for paint, or put up clouds of Bondo dust while sanding. Only when we painted a car with two-pack catalytic paint was the painting booth cleared of all individuals who did not have a fresh-air respirator strapped to their face. From this I learned the importance of safeguarding against suspended particulates in the air, and drifting toxic fumes, with the religious use of filter masks and latex gloves and respirators (or wide open shop doors). I know that the cumulative effects of these offensive materials can shorten your lifespan and one look at all the towering kits I have accumulated over the years tells me I need to live well past a hundred if I am ever going to build them all! Until next time, be safe and have fun! --Don Bailey, Safety Officer
