All members will be notified of any changes. The next meeting is October 16th, MEMBERSHIP We are always looking for new members. So if you, or someone else you know is interested in joining our club, please come to one of our membership meetings. For more information on membership, please contact our Membership Chairman, Wally Hunt. Ron and Rena Rees took there 1955 Ford Crown Victoria to Bradford, Pennsylvania on Sunday September 9th to enter the Autumn Daze Car Show. Ron is from that area and said it was fun to be in a car show in his home town. They won best of show out of 106 cars. Congratulations Ron and Rena. Ron and Rena Rees Win Best of Show in Home Town

September, 2018 page 3 President s Message So we have to suffer through an annoying Hurricane Florence with heavy rain and humidity before we finally get to see some fall weather.

Nancy and I spent Saturday, her birthday, going out to lunch and shopping. Last week they said Saturday was going to be a very stormy day. Instead we had clouds with periods of sunshine.

3 September, 2018 page 3 President s Message So we have to suffer through an annoying Hurricane Florence with heavy rain and humidity before we finally get to see some fall weather. It could be a lot worse. Our area really did dodge a bullet this time. The Carolinas got hit bad while the worst of the storm is kind of headed around us. Nancy and I spent Saturday, her birthday, going out to lunch and shopping. Last week they said Saturday was going to be a very stormy day. Instead we had clouds with periods of sunshine. It has been on again off again rain and sunshine. I guess that is the effect of the hurricane s swirling outer bands. My daughter, Liz, calls it Flo s skirt. Hope everyone is enjoying the car show season between the rains. We have had a good one and we still have a lot more to go. On September 1st we had twelve cars at Madison. Wish we could have had a few more, but it was still pretty a pretty good display. People seemed to like it, and the only rain was on the return trip. I missed the cookout at Mark Irving s place the next day. At home the folks had a sort of impromptu labor day cookout of our own and we stayed around for that. The Manassas Meet was to be held rain or shine on Saturday the 15th. I couldn t make it there. I hope someone from our region did go and they will be able to tell us about it. The governor s first annual classic car show on the 15th was rescheduled to the 29th. I am still planning to go to that one. I am also planning to go to the Tidewater Meet on the 22nd. Hope to see a lot of us there. Don t forget Hershey in October and all the other events included on our calendar. Maybe there will be no more rain outs. Or club has a few local events coming soon. On October 27th we need everyone to bring cars to Shannon Airport for the annual Harvest Festival Wings an Wheels. This will be the third time our club has done this. It will be a good time. There is an aviation museum and last year the Bealeton Air Show arrived and put on their show for everyone. The Eagle Village display is coming up. Again we need everyone to show up for this one. Also our Christmas luncheon at the Fredericksburg Country Club has been scheduled for December 9th (actually not sure about that date. Check me on it.). An important time is coming up for our club. In the next two months we will be choosing a new group of leaders for the club s executive board. I know that all of you have the best interests of our club at heart and will be willing to serve however you can. Your club needs you and you will be appreciated. At this meeting we will form the nominating committee. These folks will have the job of coming up with a list of nominees for office. I am looking forward to the end of the year when I will congratulate the new board members. See you at the meeting. 4 The Magneto page 4 Historic Fredericksburg Region, AACA - Monthly Meeting August 21, 2018 President Doug Makin called the meeting to order at 730 PM. There were 24 members present and 1 guest, Scott Clemons from the Aquia Creek Corvette Club. July 2018 Minutes The July minutes were approved with one correction. The refreshments signup had an open spot for November drinks if you are interested. The Hunts changed to November, leaving September open. Treasurer s Report The deposit was received from the barricades. The treasurer s report was given. We broke even at the car show, despite the rain. COMMITTEE REPORT Sunshine Club Rena sent Fred and Lorraine Becker get well cards. Lorraine is doing well with her knee recovery. Fred is doing well with his toe repair. Legislative Don Mohr was not present to report. Magneto newsletter Neil has been sending articles thank you. Any one else who has articles and pictures, please send. Web site Nora has updated the website and will update with this month s information. Membership and Activities Wally reported on the most recent events: He hosted a meeting about a possible divisional tour The committee came up with a potential date, to submit to National starting on 6/2 for a 3 day tour, Sun-Tuesday. If they come on Friday, guests can come to the show and stay for the tour. ODMA has not decided on firm date for It will be in Williamsburg in April. NO firm date yet. There is a show this Sat at Thomas Nelson Community College, to benefit their automotive program. On 9/1/18, we have Taste of the Mountains. The plan is to meet at Tractor Supply that morning at AM. It is very important we all arrive on time and before roads are blocked. The club discussed how this annual event is a favorite because the town has many vendors, food trucks and music, etc during that day. This is also a very important event for our club; it has been one of our annual fundraisers for many years. All cars must be in place by There is trailer parking at the elementary school, easy drive in. On 9/2/18, Sunday of Labor Day weekend, there is a cookout at Mark s house. This is a club event. Flyers are on the front table. Other upcoming events include: Car Cruise in 10/28 Jukebox Diner, Mannassas VA, This is a benefit for family of a girl who was killed during a storm last month when a tree fell on the house. Shannon Airport Fall Festival same day (10/28), cars need to be there early. May conflict with Cars and Coffee due to timing. Bull Run Manassas Meet, 9/15 Museum, get there early. Car Truck and Bike Show for Autism classic Iron, 9/22. Tidewater Meet, 9/22 Aviation Museum Free admission Oct Carlisle Fall Hershey 10/10/18-10/13/18. Car registration deadline was last week. Walk to end Alzheimers car display requested, 10/13 Charity event at Pratt Park, same day benefit Stafford Foster Program. 10/13 Toys for Tots, Sat 10/20 Classic Iron This Sunday Verdun Adventure Summer Concert Series Antique Cars are free. 5 September, 2018 page 5 Sherman was at the Richmond Show His Packard had 5 vapor lock issues, but he was honored to have his 1936 Packard by the main tent and winning first place in his class. The Jaguar club had many nice vehicles out as well and it made a nice collaborative display. Richmond Packards were notably missing due to the heat. Terry Thomann went to the Pontiac Museum in Southern IL. Not a huge museum, but very nice. They have a tour coming up between the museum and CA via Rt 66. Liz and Wally will be taking their Model T to the Ford Museum in Dearborne, MI. They were invited to come. Then they and the car are going on to North Dakota. HFRAACA Annual Meet J has nothing this month. Barricade funding was returned. OLD BUSINESS Historical Marker Emily and Ken have exchanged s. There are 2 Kispaugh s and several Fosters in the area. Emily has been in contact with the DMV archives and Ken will be asking them for assistance. First VA tags were issued in Of the 3 cars in question, two are 1907, one was homebuilt. Ken is going to do more research into the development of Rt 1 as well. Nominating Committee New board is needed for next year. We currently have 7 board members For the September meeting, they need to have a representative for the Nominating Committee. The representatives need to be present at the September meeting to go over their duties. By the October meeting, they need to have a selection. We are still looking for presentations for club meetings. NEW BUSINESS In June, Terry Thomann brought up the idea of donating old car magazines. He has taken some to Burton s Automotive they were happy. Firestone was not interested. His doctor s office was happy to receive some. Terry printed some labels and has brought them to the meeting for club members to use for donating magazines. Wally takes AACA magazines to give out at shows and will take some labels to add to those magazines. Taste of the Mountains if anyone wants to drive Doug s truck, you are welcome to. We need to have a good showing the club is paid to attend. Doug looked back through old Magnetos Aug 30, 1977 was the first time our club attended. Doug reminded us of the past commitment of club members reading requests and thank you s for support in 1997 at Taste of the Mountains, Massaponax, and Park and Shop Shopping Centers. Ken has been working on his garage and the MG. He has noticed a problem with his oil pan seems to have too short bolts in the front and back of the oil pan and they didn t reach into the block. He s curious about heliocoils. Frank DuVal offered to loan him the tools, or Fredericksburg Auto Parts will have the tools needed. Sherman recommended including RTV on the bolts and around the gasket to prevent oil leaks around the bolts. Check out the FB page for events dynamic updates and lots of good information. Sept 15, the Governor is having a Governor s Classic Car Show register in advance. $25 includes tours of the mansion and the Capital. Ben closed the meeting with a prayer. The club meeting was adjourned at 8:27 PM.

The weatherman called for clouds and occasional showers. It was cloudy but there was no rain until the drive home.

Other than that the day was good and the show was a success.

7 Taste of the Mountains After meeting at the shopping center on Route 3 while it was still a little dark. Twelve of our cars traveled sixty or so miles to Madison Virginia to put on our annual car display at the Taste of the Mountains Festival. The weatherman called for clouds and occasional showers. It was cloudy but there was no rain until the drive home. Coming back down Route 3 in Culpeper County we ran into some very heavy downpours which only lasted a short while. Other than that the day was good and the show was a success. Those members bringing cars on the field were: Fred becker-85 Thunderbird, J Brown-56 Thunderbird, Wally and Liz Hunt-24 Model T, Sam Enfield-20 Model T, Joe Cornet and Janet Bykowski35 Mercedes, Ken Loucks-79 MG, Ron and Rena Rees-55 Ford, Ben and Suzanne Schooler-76 Granada, Doug Makin-63 Dodge, David Armstrong 81 Lincoln, Hank and Marjorie Mausolf-78 Rolls Royce, Jimmy and Laura Lowe-47 Plymouth, Thanks to all of you for supporting the club.

Lewis passion for sharing the beauty of the automobile. And enjoyed, they are. All the cars are beautifully restored.

About 70 volunteers are given the opportunity to help maintain the gallery and the cars and in exchange, they get to drive them. All in all, the gallery has approximately 60 cars.

8 The Magneto page 8 An Afternoon in Green Bay, WI By Nora Aftel What do you do when you find yourself with a few hours to kill? Find the local car display, of course. In Green Bay, WI, the place to go is The Automobile Gallery. The Automobile Gallery was founded about 2 years ago by William Red Lewis. Mr. Lewis loved cars and enjoyed quite a collection. His kids don t share the same interest and when they indicated that upon his death, they would likely sell the collection at auction, Mr. Lewis decided to go a different way. He bought an old Cadillac dealership and fixed it up to put the cars on display to be enjoyed. Other cars have been donated to the collection by others who share Mr. Lewis passion for sharing the beauty of the automobile. And enjoyed, they are. All the cars are beautifully restored. With the exception of a couple of race cars, all of the cars are continuously maintained and tended and regularly driven by volunteers. About 70 volunteers are given the opportunity to help maintain the gallery and the cars and in exchange, they get to drive them. All in all, the gallery has approximately 60 cars. They range from a 1912 Maxwell, 1917 Milburn Light Electric Model 27 (an AACA Grand National winner from Mr. Lewis collection) to a modern Shelby Cobra Mustang Hertz Rental Car. A few cars were available for visitors to sit in and take photos (1919 Dort Speedster, 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Custom, and a Delorean). It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon. I enjoyed the cars as Mr. Lewis intended. And I had a good time talking to some of the volunteers. Their biggest comment was that they love the opportunity to drive these cars. There is no other way they d have the chance to experience some of these vehicles. What a wonderful way for Mr. Lewis to share his passion for well engineered vehicles. By the way Mr. Lewis is still alive, enjoying the opportunity to share his vehicles with others who love them. Apparently, he playfully reminds the volunteers Any tickets are your responsibility.
