11 Safety Guide: What will you need when you are out of range? It may be unusual for smart phones to be out of range these days. However, there s actually a high chance for your mobile phone to lose reception because the current mobile network only covers 12% of Australia. You may easily find your phone without reception on major highways while you are off caravanning or on a road trip. So what will you need when you are in the remaining 88% of Australia? Always stay connected UHF radio will keep you connected by allowing communication with travellers around you. It is particularly handy when you want to find useful information regarding your trip, or for assistance when your phone has turned into a brick. Just by scanning the channels on your UHF, you will easily find farmers or truck drivers who are willing to help you out. No stress, no yelling, and everyone can enjoy their trip. If you would rather go bush walking, a handheld GPS will still let you soak in nature in peace, while giving you the right direction. Get your TV reception back The analogue TV is being shut down around Australia and replaced by the new digital TV service, but it is not as accessible in some remote areas as the old analogue system was. This leaves outlying households, rural properties and travellers with poor or no TV reception. All you need is a satellite TV system which will give you terrific TV reception and it is easy to set up. Keep your family safe HF radio is one of the best options for people who want safety in the outback or on a road trip. It is extremely reliable and calls are free. They are also an essential piece of equipment used by the Defence Force and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The alternative is to take a satellite phone with you. It is easy to operate and works exactly like a mobile phone. As it relies on the satellites in space it will work even if there is no mobile coverage. Emergency beacons operate when you don t need to stay connected but still need a way to call for help in case of emergency. Never lose your directions again Your smart phones may be able to navigate, but once they lose reception, the GPS features automatically shut down, so it is not wise to rely solely on a smart phone. This is the reason it is important to get a good GPS unit. It will give clear instructions in a calm manner until you reach your destination, even if you take the wrong exit, so your partner will no longer need to panic.
