Louie has been diving for 13 years, has been a SSI certified Advanced Open Water diving instructor since 2005, and has led dives to such places as Belize, Bonaire, Philippines and more. Louie will provide us with lots of information, such as: How/where to get certified for the first time, or to get a refresher course Places to dive within driving distance Places to dive involving air travel How much gear to take vs. rent when traveling How to get the most enjoyment out of dives What is it like to dive what do you see? The RSOC Board will meet Tuesday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m. at Wild Wing Café, 7900 Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh (in the section across the road from the Walmart complex). All members are welcome to attend this meeting.

HIKE IN UMSTEAD Saturday, April 18 #AD1506 Come out and enjoy another spring hike! We will hike the Sal s Branch Trail in Umstead Park, on the 70 (Glenwood) side of Umstead.

Afterwards we can get lunch nearby sandwich shop if anyone is interested. Call or text the Coordinator if you have any questions. Location: Umstead State Park, off Hwy. 70.

2 HIKE IN UMSTEAD Saturday, April 18 #AD1506 Come out and enjoy another spring hike! We will hike the Sal s Branch Trail in Umstead Park, on the 70 (Glenwood) side of Umstead. The trail is 3 miles and we can add on a 0.6 mile loop. The trail will take about hours depending on the walking speed of the group and stops. Afterwards we can get lunch nearby sandwich shop if anyone is interested. Call or text the Coordinator if you have any questions. Location: Umstead State Park, off Hwy. 70. Take the Glenwood entrance into the park and meet at the visitor center. Bring: Water, snacks, layers of clothing Time: 10:00 a.m. Cost: Free Coordinator: Charlene Flahiff cflahiff@yahoo.com 919/ DURHAM SYMPHONY POPS IN THE PARK CONCERT Saturday, May 2 #LE1505 Enjoy a relaxing Saturday afternoon with free live music compliments of the Durham Symphony ( w w w. d ur h a m s ym ph on y. or g / ). Maestro William Henry Curry, the Music Director and Conductor of the Durham Symphony, conducts pops concerts throughout the state. Trinity Park is one of Durham s oldest and most beautifully gentrified central neighborhoods. It is located between Duke University s East Campus and downtown. Free street parking. Bring a cooler with a beverage of choice, picnic, lawn chair, kids and/or pets to the park and be ready to listen to some good music! And since it is going to be the first Saturday in May, let s go watch the Kentucky Derby afterwards! So wear your impressively big hats and we will be the best dressed at Tobacco Road Sports Café. Post time for the Kentucky Derby is 6:24pm so let s not miss out on the excitement! If you want to carpool, contact the Coordinator in advance. Location: Symphony: Trinity Park, 410 Watts Street, Durham Kentucky Derby: Tobacco Road Sports Case, 280 South Mangum Street, Durham Time: 5:00 p.m. Cost: Symphony: Free; Kentucky Derby: Cost of food/drinks Coordinator: Dwen Andrews-Cita dwen-cita@gmail.com 919/ / The Umstead Coalition 2015 Walk/Run/Bike for Umstead Saturday, April 18 Choose between a 4-mile Walk/Run, a 4-mile beginner mountain bike tour, or a 10-mile intermediate mountain bike tour on a private farm on Reedy Creek Road next to William B. Umstead State Park. Enjoy live music along the trail and on the main stage. This is a community event for the appreciation, use, and preservation of William B. Umstead State Park. Funds raised will go towards restoration of the 104 historic cabins and mess halls, invasive plant control, and environmental education. The registration fee (which varies based on age and date of registration) includes Walk/Run/Bike, T-shirt, live music, snacks, door prizes free gifts from Great Outdoor Provision Company, Inside-Out Sports, All Star Bike Shop, Outdoor Bird Company, and more. Spectators free of charge. Teams are five or more registered individuals (you can have as many team members as you like). Numerous awards and prizes will be given based on amount of pledges raised and fastest participants. Details of the event including the schedule, registration information, and awards and prizes can be found on The Umstead Coalition website: 919/ RSOC HASH RUN Saturday, May 2 #AD1501 Join us for a run/walk and cookout! A hash run is a running/walking route marked with flour dollops or chalk with a rest break about halfway through the trail. We will join Tarheel Hash House Harriers for a neighborhood exploration of running trails, woods, fields and streets. Anyone who can follow a trail is welcome as this hash is G rated. After our trail run/walk is complete, we will have a cookout and refreshments. Dogs that play well with others and wear a leash are welcome. 3 CSC SPRING CONVENTION KINGSTON PLANTATION, MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA Thursday-Sunday, April #SK1504 Start the spring with a trip to Myrtle Beach and the Crescent Ski Council Spring Convention. This is not just an event for skiers, and is a fun weekend at the beach at one of the nicest resorts in Myrtle Beach (more like a Hilton Head resort). There will be people attending from the 21 CSC clubs, a great opportunity to meet other CSC members. Kingston Plantation is a 145-acre oceanfront paradise complete with beautifully landscaped grounds and white sand beaches. Enjoy SPLASH!, a 50,000 square foot pool complex to swim, float, sun or just relax. A restaurant and lounge are on the premises. The Sports and Health Club features an indoor lap pool, cardio-vascular equipment, sauna, whirlpool, and 13 tennis courts. The wellfurnished, condos, including a full kitchen with coffee maker, microwave, dishwater, washer/dryer, cable TV, phones, maid service. The schedule of events includes: Thursday evening Early Bird Reception for those wanting an early start to a long weekend at the beach. OUR CONDOLENCES We extend our sympathy to our fellow club member, Susan Nicholas, whose mother recently passed away. Our thoughts are with Susan and her family in their time of loss. Saturday A.M. Business Session (only club reps need attend) Saturday afternoon Famous and Fun Beach Olympics. RSOC has had a very good showing the last few years; so, let s continue our impressive record and have a strong participation to bring home the title this year. Saturday night Theme Party -- Pirates in Margaritaville (with prizes for the best costumes). There will also be door prizes provided by the ski resorts, tour operators, and other sponsors. There will be plenty of free time to enjoy the beach and the beautiful facilities at Kingston Plantation. Also, you are very near one of the outlet malls and just a short drive from Barefoot Landing and many restaurants. The CSC Spring Convention is so much fun; so, sign up and be a part of it! PRICE PER PERSON: Price ranges from $122 - $373 at Brighton Towers, depending on the number of nights (2 or 3), and number of people (2-6) per condo. At this time, all condos have been filled; however, contact the Coordinator to put your name on a waiting list in the event of a cancellation. *OFF-SITE FEE: $45.00 (no more single event fees) On-Site Registration: $50.00 (If your name isn t on the door list, you ll have to pay this amount at the door.) All lodging will be assigned to clubs. 4 RSOC NIGHT WITH THE DURHAM BULLS Friday, May 29 #AD1504 Join RSOC for an exciting night at the ballpark as the Durham Bulls take on the Syracuse Chiefs. We have great seats reserved near first base. This is a great way to spend a summer evening. Come cheer on the Bulls and enjoy fireworks after the game! Game starts at 7 p.m. We will gather to eat beforehand around 5:30 p.m. at the Tobacco Road Sports Café adjacent to the ballpark, behind the Bull/scoreboard. This is optional and not included in the fee; but, please let the Coordinator know if you plan to attend. Location: (for dinner) Tobacco Road Sports Café, 280 South Magnum Street, Durham; (the ball game) Durham Bulls Athletic Park, 409 Blackwell Street, Durham Start time: Approximately 5:30 p.m. for dinner at Tobacco Road Sports Café; 7:05 p.m. at the ballpark for the game. Coordinator: Charlene Flahiff 919/ cflahiff@yahoo.com RSOC 50TH ANNIVERSARY PIG PICKIN Saturday, October 3 It isn t that common for a social club to remain a viable organization for 50 years. But, the RSOC has achieved just that! In 1969, the Raleigh Ski and Outing Club was formed to encourage group participation in skiing, camping, hiking, sailing, canoeing, rafting and other activities. And, for 50 years the RSOC has certainly fulfilled its objective! We need to celebrate this great milestone the RSOC s 50th anniversary! So, save the date of Saturday, October 3, for a celebratory pig pickin where our goal is to draw in as many current and former RSOC members as possible to reminisce about the 50 years of great times we ve shared as RSOCers. Be sure to look for all the details about the RSOC 50th Anniversary Pig Pickin in upcoming newsletters. CAMPING AT ROAN MOUNTAIN Thursday to Sunday, June #AD1502 Spend the weekend camping, hiking, and attending the Rhododendron Festival! We have a group campsite reserved at the Tennessee Roan Mountain State Park for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Arrive either Thursday or Friday. We plan to day hike the Appalachian Trail by driving 10 miles, parking, and then hiking the high balds. Elevation of Roan Mountain is 6,285. Hiking is along scenic high elevation balds. The rhododendron, of which there is plenty in this area, is typically in full bloom the last half of June thus, the timing for the trip and the festival held in the State Park where we are staying. Spend your return to the campsite by attending the rhododendron festival or just chilling. Travel, tent, food, and other camping needs are the responsibility of each camper. Carpooling is encouraged. Campground is just outside the North Carolina state line and driving time is approximately four hours each way. The Coordinator is looking into a possible add-on for rafting/ zip-lining on the French Broad River on Sunday/Monday. Location: Roan Mountain State Park, Tennessee Event fee: $10/RSOC member/weekend ($15 non-members). The number of campers is limited to 20, and based on receipt of payment. Coordinator: Ken Schuster 919/ kschoo2429@yahoo.com SUNDAY BIKE RIDES IN THE TRIANGLE #AD0906 Join your fellow club members for biking on various trails and roads in the Triangle. This is a group ride for the casual cyclist, and is a great way to stay in shape. Contact the Coordinators to have your name added to the contact list to receive weekly updates on the cycling route and time which will vary from week to week. We ride approximately two hours, and the goal is to ride each Sunday. The rides are usually followed up with some much needed refreshments and food at a local dining establishment. Location: We will ride a different route each Sunday. Please the Coordinators and get on the list for ride/ route information. Event Fee: No fee; but, please let the coordinator know in advance if you plan to attend. NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA Queenstown, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney September 5-20, 2015 #SK1503 If you were not able to go on the 2006 trip to New Zealand and Australia, then this is an opportunity you

Queenstown, New Zealand, is the action capital of New Zealand with skiing at four ski field locations, bungey jumping and the Shotover Jet, just to name a few things to do.

There will also be the possibility of a trip extension, either before or after depending on flight connections, to either Cairns or maybe even Tahiti.

This time we will stop in some new locations and see even more of Australia. Queenstown, New Zealand, is the action capital of New Zealand with skiing at four ski field locations, bungey jumping and the Shotover Jet, just to name a few things to do. Australia offers many interesting things to see and do with three city stops. There will also be the possibility of a trip extension, either before or after depending on flight connections, to either Cairns or maybe even Tahiti. We will need at least 20 trip participants for this trip to take place.
