The Official Newsletter of EAA Chapter 2 April 2014 Volume 58, Issue 4 Greetings Chapter 2, Well, we haven't had any major snow storms in the last couple of weeks, so I think maybe spring is finally on its way. Really looking forward to warmer days and seeing more airplanes in the sky! Thanks to everyone who attended the March meeting for the helicopter operations presentation. Ron Whetstone, Chief Pilot for Lutheran Air, has a vast knowledge of helicopters and gave a great talk. He answered lots of questions and covered a wide variety of helicopters. For our April 11 th meeting, we'll knock some of the winter rust off with a WINGS safety seminar on aviation charts and airspace. Craig Brown, CFII, will be hosting this presentation and you can register online for WINGS credit here: We will also show an episode of the EAA Chapter Video Magazine if time permits. Please don't forget to contact your representatives in Congress and ask for them to co-sponsor, or at least support, the General Aviation Pilot Protection Act. It is H.R in the House and S in the Senate. You can contact them directly by phone, through their respective websites or you can use EAA's Rally Congress Tool at: which sends a message to all of your representatives at once. I hope to see everyone on the 11th! Happy Flying, Next Meeting: April 11th, 7pm Ivy Tech Bldg at KSMD WINGS Seminar on Charts and Airspace, by Craig Brown Informal Fly Out List Chapter 2 is building an informal fly-out list. If you would like to be notified of informal fly-outs, please send your address to Kevin Stahl at President@eaa2.org to be included on the list. Chapter Dues Deadline is April 11th Chapter dues are collected at the beginning of each year. Yearly dues are only $20 and are used to cover a variety of chapter expenses. Dues can be paid in person at a chapter meeting, by sending a check to Geoff at the address included on the renewal form or by paying online with a credit card or PayPal account by going to If you have any questions, please contact Kevin or Geoff. Thank you for your continued support of EAA Chapter 2! Kevin

Banquet Survey Results Each year at our banquet, we put out a survey to see what the membership likes about Chapter 2, what could be improved and to solicit event suggestions. Here is a summary of the results from this year. What do you enjoy most about Chapter 2? The overwhelming response was the people! We couldn't agree more! Also frequently mentioned were the project tours and the Chapter Video Magazine episodes. In what ways could Chapter 2 be improved? More fly-outs was the top suggestion. More member attendance and participation was also mentioned. The informal fly-out list was created a year ago to help address the recurring "more fly-outs" suggestion. With a full schedule of chapter events during the year, other area events, differences in pilot weather minimums as well as maintaining personal lives, it's very difficult to schedule fly-outs that are well attended. We are hopeful the fly-out list will help bring more people together when it's convenient for them. It allows anyone who wants to have a fly-out at any time to send a message to the contact list inviting the list members to join in. This allows fly-outs to be set up on relatively short notice as time & weather permits. If you are not already on the list and would like to join, please contact Kevin. What meeting topics, event ideas or other suggestions do you have? The only response was to have more hands-on workshops. We appreciate the suggestion and will do our best to organize something for later this year. Thank you to everyone who filled out a survey. As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to share your thoughts and suggestions with the leadership team at any time. We really do appreciate hearing from you! EAA 2 Online Marketplace Do you have an aviation-related item you'd like to sell or have one that you are looking for? Please visit the EAA Chapter 2 Online Marketplace at where you can browse listed items or submit your own "For Sale" or "Wanted" listings. This is a free service provided to Chapter 2 members! If you have any questions or issues, please contact Kevin. AOPA Announces Regional Fly-Ins This year, AOPA will be hosting a number of regional fly-ins around the country. Each will feature a pancake breakfast and town hall meeting with AOPA president Mark Baker. There will also be vendors, aircraft displays, safety seminars, and the chance to meet with AOPA representatives. EAA is planning to be involved with the events too. There is no charge to attend. We are fortunate that one of these fly-ins will be held at Indianapolis Regional Airport (MQJ) on Saturday May 31, We are hoping to get a group of planes together to fly to the event. Mark your calendars for May 31st and look for more info as the event draws closer. Chapter Member Project List We frequently get asked what types of projects are being worked on by our chapter members. Some we know about but there may be others we're not aware of. As such, we'd like to build a list of what projects are currently under construction. If you currently have a project, we'd appreciate it if you could contact Kevin at kevin.stahl@eaa2.org or ( preferred) with your name and the type of aircraft under construction or restoration. Feel free to include any other info you think would be helpful and we'll put together the list. We may make it available in the newsletter or website so other chapter members know about them too. If you'd prefer not to have your project info published, please include that request as well. We'd love to include a photo of your project on the Member's Aircraft section of the website as well. Thank you!

Poker Rally Planned for July 5th A poker rally is being planned for Saturday July 5. This will be a joint event between EAA Chapter 2 and Vintage Chapter 37. Other area pilots are welcome to participate as well. More information will be available soon but please mark your calendars for a fun day of flying on July 5th! Member Profile Who s Who in Chapter 2? Please Support H.R A bill called the General Aviation Pilot Protection Act (H.R. 3708) has been introduced in the House of Representatives and is sponsored by Indiana's own Todd Rokita. This bill would replace the third-class medical requirement with a valid state driver's license for VFR, non-commercial operations in aircraft up to 6,000 lbs gross takeoff weight and a maximum of 6 seats. AOPA and EAA petitioned the FAA for a similar, albeit less broad, exemption but the FAA has failed to act. This is not a petition! If this passes, it becomes law and the FAA must implement it! We need the support of EVERY Chapter member! Please contact your representative and ask him or her to co-sponsor H.R You can look up and contact your representative here: This is our best chance at removing the burdensome third-class medical requirement for recreational flying and is a critical step in growing the pilot population. Please contact your representative today! Huntington Tri-Motor Tour Stop & Young Eagles Rally The Huntington Municipal Airport is planning to host an EAA Ford Tri-Motor tour stop this June. They have also contacted EAA Chapter 2 about hosting a Young Eagles Rally in Huntington in conjunction with the visit. We thought it would be a great idea so we are planning a rally for Saturday June 28. The Tri-Motor will be there from Thursday June 26 through Sunday June 29. While the details are still being worked out, please save the date for what is sure to be a fun day at the Huntington airport! Name Mark Beck Are you a licensed pilot? Yes, single engine, land, VFR When did you start flying? I started August 23, 1969 and soloed September 11, 1969 after 8 hours dual. I earned my private pilot certificate December 20, 1969 while a senior in high school.

What do you currently fly? RV6A, and occasionally Dad s 1956 Cessna 172 What is the most interesting place you've flown? At this point, it is a four-way tie between Thermal, CA at 117 feet below sea level and 105degrees F, Catalina Island in the Pacific, First Flight and Cape Hatteras, NC on the Atlantic, and Lake Front airport, New Orleans, LA. What is your favorite place to fly? Oshkosh is the highlight every year. We like to fly to South Haven, MI for lunch or overnights, Ann Arbor, MI to see one daughter, and out on the prairie past Cedar Rapids, IA to see four grandsons. How long have you been a member of Chapter 2? About 20 years, but I have lost track of that. What is your favorite thing about Chapter 2? I enjoy learning from the great variety of builders and pilots involved in the Chapter. What is your interest in aviation? I love flying to new places, fly-ins, and being able to maintain my own plane. I like to share aviation with children, youth, and adults. What are you building or dreaming of building? Since 2007, I have been flying my dream-come true, my RV6A, built by my wife and me. Who introduced you to aviation? My dad got me hooked on aviation when he got back into it in the sixties, brought home a Cessna 140, and we built an airstrip on the farm. What is your favorite airplane? My RV6A. If I am not out flying that little yellow sun chaser at least once per week, she is calling my name. Who is your dream co-pilot? Sean D. Tucker would be a great co-pilot. What is your occupation? Teacher for 38 years, currently middle school science in Fort Wayne Community Schools. What has been your most unique job? For 17 years I was self-employed as a property manager for as many as 25 homes at a time, doing all the leases, finances and maintenance. What is your most memorable flying experience? In 1985, my Dad and I took his 1956 Cessna 172 on a 14 day trip through the southwestern states, camping at many national parks and some deserted airfields, picking up my brother in San Diego, and flying to Catalina Island. After each leg we traded seats and logged many wonderful hours and memories. Let s Grow Chapter 2 Together! This has been a long, cold winter with not enough flying. Spring will soon be here, with its promise of longer days and new growth. You can help our chapter to grow, too. I have a challenge for you. Find a pilot who is emerging from a snowed-in hanger. The flyer may be grouchy from being inside for so long. But pilots will soon warm up when they are among other flyers. Bring that aviator to our next chapter event! Let's grow Chapter 2 together. Thanks, Craig Swanson Member Submissions We would like to have your member submissions! Please send us a short written story of a trip you ve taken, a first flight of a homebuilt, a first solo, or other aviation related story. Send submissions to newsletter@eaa2.org.

Homebuilt Corner By Larry Zepp Now that it is officially Spring, we are still waiting for winter to exit we are checking in on the Zenith 750 project being built at EAA Headquarters. Here is the link to their progress as they near their first flight! FAA Registration In Hand, Two Boxes Installed Posted on March 13, 2014 by Charlie Becker The FAA paperwork is divided into two steps: 1. Registration and 2. Certification. It is a confusing process that can really drag out if you make any mistakes. You can t get to step two until step one is complete. To make it easier we created the EAA Amateur Certification Kit which I recommend to everyone. It includes a step by step booklet, FAA forms, Experimental sticker, placards and a dataplate. It is a real value for $ By the end of the evening we did get two of our three Dynon Sky View boxes permanently mounted in place. One more to go. I was a bit concerned about the registration process because I usually recommend sending in the
