Members and guests are always welcome to attend. Next Meeting: Saturday, 9 June, 10.00am. Guest Speaker Program Our Guest Speaker for the June General Meeting is Innisfail artist Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch. In conjunction with her current exhibition Elevating the Spirit at the Cairns Regional Gallery, Kerryn will give a presentation on her Journey of the Spirit. Based in tropical North Queensland since 1985, she has lived and breathed art all her life. In 1998 she opened the Artropica Innisfail Studio Gallery providing fine art materials, framing, studio and gallery space with an emphasis on local art and giftware. Parallels by Kerryn Madsen-Pietsch Sometimes called an electric artist, I work in both two and three dimensions across a range of mediums. This requires a heightened sense of awareness, creativity, flexibility and openness in one s practice. As my life is a continual evolving process, it is therefore a demanding journey of creativity, revelation, transformation and personal interpretation, requiring much courage and perseverance over the years. Kerryn s exhibition is showing at CRG until 17 June, though don t forget to check out her website: Contact us: Mailing Address: Cairns Art Society Inc. We had a great location, and the wide range of quality pieces attracted tourist and local strollers all day, despite the occasional shower. Although sales were low, it was a very pleasant and social day for all those involved. Many thanks to Geoff and Sue Brazier for organizing the stand and carting the screens and easels to and from Cominos House, and to everyone who took part. If you d like Art on the Esplanade to continue, please let us know.

3 Exhibitions gallery 53 Connective Tissue The Mother/Daughter Relationship as an Adjunct to Personality through Time Christine Eyres May 25 June 9 Launching by Christine Eyres Christine s exhibition had a very successful opening on May 25 with many works being sold. This body of work comes from an exploration of 4 generations of the matriarchal line of my Scottish family. My research gave me a glimpse into their lives. It took me to the tenements of Glasgow and, at one stage, to the poor house in Edinburgh. I found women who survived unbelievable poverty, pandemics, the great depression, two world wars and the upheaval of migration to a new country. I found women who lacked comfort and nurture in their lives who, in turn, demanded that their daughters be independent and undemanding. I found women who left a legacy of indomitable strength. 53 Spence Street / Colourful Moments Christa Youngman and Andrea Reichardt Depicting scenes from the reef to the outback. Christa recently attended Lyn Butchart s class at the McGregor Summer School and learnt some great watercolour techniques. 6 Guest Speaker: May Our May Guest Speaker was Vice-President Michael Ferris. Earlier this year, Mike had the opportunity to visit Venice whilst on an overseas holiday. Through some of the 350 photos he took, he shared this experience with us in his PowerPoint presentation and watercolour demonstration of the Scenes of Venice. Michael Ferris with Gondolas As an architect, visiting Venice was one of those things on his Have to do before I Die list. A city renowned for its romance, architecture and culture, it s become one of the greatest tourist attractions of the world. Nestled off the north east coast of Italy, the soul of the city is the sea her foundation, history and fortune are born of the sea and the 118 islets that form the Venice lagoon. When first settled in the 5 th and 6 th centuries, this labyrinth of tiny islands had very little to accommodate new arrivals, so they built their houses by creating artificial foundations, driving stakes into the subsoil on the seabed of the islands, and in effect their houses were afloat. St. Mark s Square, Bridge of Rialto, Canal Grande, Palazzo Ducale and Frari s Basilica are all well-known landmarks. Mike noted that with no buildings over 4 or 5 levels there s symmetry and balance that adds to the skyline. Domes, steeples and columns give a rich backdrop to the aging facades of these buildings, seemingly frozen in time... making it the most photographed city on the planet. The Venetian way of life is very different, most notably the absence of cars. There are no street names; buildings are identified by their coloured poles. Obviously, ferries, boats and gondolas are everywhere. Venice was once Europe s main trading post between West and East, now it is slightly shabby but with a uniqueness all of its own. With 14,000,000 visitors a year, it s a haven for shopaholics but be prepared to pay $300 for a half hour gondola ride and a cappuccino will set you back 20 bucks. Slowly sinking despite continued measures to improve the situation, Venice is undergoing much restoration. Water pollution, (not to mention the constant stench of pigeon manure), and tidal flooding is its greatest enemy. Demonstrating to a captive audience Mike began his demonstration of a gondola scene by having his basic sketch pre-drawn, (to prevent pencil smudging, he copies and transfers his original drawing using butter paper). Like all paintings, composition is the first priority, eliminating any distracting elements. Using a fine textured (due to the fine details involved in this work) 300gsm cold pressed w/c paper, he began blocking in the sky, graduating the colour out from the horizon. Commence by doing the lightest washes first. It s essential to have a test page to ensure your colours are correct before you put brush to paper. It may take several washes to obtain the desired result, but never attempt to go back into half dry paint. Each wash should be controlled use a good quality brush that holds water and forms to a point. 6 Bridge of Rialto (Photo) In stark contrast to Australia s intense light, the Venetian sky is pale and misty. It s the reflections in the water, which helps bring the city to life. Including a tint of Pink Carmine (not as flat as Alizarin Crimson) and adding a hint of yellow to the horizon will give that extra glow. Mike then painted distant buildings, the water, foreground, and began on the gondolas. A light wash of Indigo and Charcoal Grey added to a mix of Ultramarine Blue will give the intensity of black for the gondolas. Unfortunately, due to limited time, we didn t get to see the finished product but Mike had an enthusiastic audience. Known nationally for his award winning flowers, Mike initially began his art career painting wildlife, after discovering a passion for watercolours through his architectural training. If you d like to see more of his work, check out his website: With Thanks CAS thanks the University of the 3 rd Age for providing the laptop and projector screen for Mike s PowerPoint presentation and particularly Ken Pettit for his expertise. Your assistance is very much appreciated!!
