Hackett, MS RCEP The number one trend in fitness training for 2015 is body weight training. The high interest in body weight training indicates a return to basics bolstered by flexibility of location, time and various training aids to adapt exercises. One of the most popular modes of the body weight training trend is suspension training. Some recent research affirms what users of TRX and other suspension training systems have suspected. The next time you visit the base gym notice the straps hanging from the far end of the basketball court. They are TRX straps developed by former Navy Seal Randy Hetrick out of necessity to stay fit on deployments. TRX straps address several critical areas of fitness; core strength, balance, joint flexibility and total body strength. Below is a summary of the areas researched comparatively; TRX vs traditional strength training and TRX vs core training. First, the greatest body weight exercise ever developed, the push-up! Verses a standard pushup, a TRX pushup produces a 184% increase in activation of the rectus abdominis, around a 50% increase in the obliques and the same for the latissimus dorsi. This would be a nice addition to your work out for improving your Fitness Assessment pushup number! Planking is a very popular exercise for building core strength and rightly so. In comparing a standard plank (on your elbows and toes with body straight) versus TRX straps (elbows in straps), there is a marked increase in lower back activation using the straps. If you have a well-developed core and want to really challenge yourself, add a stability ball at your feet. This produces a big increase in oblique activation; picture your body trying to prevent itself from rolling off the ball! A strong core will benefit you in every component of the fitness assessment, especially the run and sit-ups! How about traditional strength training methods vs suspension training? Traditional types of exercises would include; bench press, squats, lunges, seated rows, planks and Roman Chair and various arm strengthening exercises. TRX exercises would include various push/pull exercises that address the same muscle groups. The take home message here is that both methods provide similar responses. The biggest gains using the traditional methods were realized in the legs, whereas TRX provided the best gains in core strength. So what method should you choose? That would depend on your goals. The real key here is what method fits your lifestyle and that you will do on a regular basis. Although there are many paths to attain your goal fitness levels, the best path is the one you are most motivated to follow. Sprinkle in a run, two to three times a week and you have a plan to take you to the next level. Exercise safe and happy! 4 November 2015
