Rivers West / Winnipeg Trails Association Annual General Meeting. - DECEMBER 3, 2014 You are invited to join us on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 for the Rivers West Red River Corridor and Winnipeg Trails Association s Annual General Meeting. Location: Time: RSVP: Rivers West offices (Salle CDEM) - 2nd floor, 614 Des Meurons Street, Winnipeg Registration is at 4:30 pm and the meeting will commence at 5:00 pm Please RSVP by Monday, December 1st by contacting Sylvie Fouasse at or info@riverswest.ca. Rivers West and the Winnipeg Trails Association will be presenting its Activity Report for 2014 and review its strategic plan highlights. At this time, Rivers West will also be introducing some of its new board members. We look forward to seeing you there. Residents in Manitoba headed to the polls Wednesday, October 22nd casting votes for their leaders. While some municipalities along the Red River Corridor did not see many changes, others saw significant modifications to its councils. The city of Winnipeg also had several changes which will undoubtedly have impacts on issues currently being addressed at the municipal level. Internally at Rivers West, we are losing our Special Projects Manager, Janice Lukes, as she is now representing the Fort-Richmond/St. Norbert ward on the city council. We will have to determine who would best fill this gap in our organization. Along the Red River Corridor, several of the council representatives who are currently on the Board of Rivers West are no longer in position at their local municipal level. This will automatically affect board composition, and will result in the appointment of a number of new representatives around the table. We hope that the nominations will take place before the Annual General Meeting, so that we may introduce you to the new board members at that time. Rivers West would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all municipal representatives who have sat on the board of directors of our organization, as well as the many allies we have worked in collaboration with over the years in the towns and municipalities along the Red River Corridor. Although you are no longer elected officials supporting Rivers West, we certainly welcome your continued engagement in developing your communities and assisting us in making a destination of the Red River and its corridor in the coming months and years.

LAUNCH OF THE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT VIDEO CLIP On Thursday, October 16th, Rivers West hosted the first launch of the Stormwater Management Short Video. This short 3-minute video created by Build Films, complements the Water on the Land - Sustainable Stormwater Management Guide. It was conceived to be used as a teaching tool for teachers at the elementary school level in an entertaining, yet informative and educational fashion; but anyone wanting to learn about the water cycle and stormwater management will benefit from this video. There are important facts about water and solutions to stormwater management that are outlined in this video Megan Krohn, Water Caucus Program Manager for Manitoba Eco-Network and member of the project committee notes. This video looks and sounds great yet passes on important messages that describe well the water cycle and stormwater management. Rivers West would like to thank all members of the planning committee, the Red River Basin Commission and the Winnipeg Foundation for its generous grant that made this video production possible. FRIENDS OF UPPER FORT GARRY UNVEIL NEW PROVINCIAL PARK The Friends of Upper Fort Garry unveiled the first portion of a new provincial park on Saturday, October 18th. The group held a ceremony at the site of the old Upper Fort Garry on Assiniboine Avenue. The multi-million dollar Upper Fort Garry Heritage Park and Interpretive Centre commemorates the birthplace of the Province of Manitoba. Louis Riel s Métis rebels seized the fort in 1869 during the first Red River Rebellion and formed his provisional government, eventually leading to Manitoba s entry into Confederation. The park drew controversy recently when members of Manitoba s Scottish community complained it didn t include the contributors Scots made to the fort s early history. Hudson s Bay Company employees, most of whom were Scottish, first established the fort in the early 1800s Friends of Upper Fort Garry chairperson Jerry Gray says everybody, including the Scottish, will have their voices heard. It s not going to happen tomorrow or the day after, but this is an ongoing project and we re going to include everybody as time goes on, he said. CTV Winnipeg Published Saturday, October 18,

THE RIVER MOVES THROUGH US MURAL IS REVEALED Funded by Take Pride Winnipeg, Rivers West, St. Norbert BIZ, and organized by Janice Lukes, The Rivers Moves Through Us, is a historical mural that encompasses a transportation theme which resembles a Trans Canada trail weaving through the area. Janice Lukes led a group who spearheaded a campaign to build a walking and bike path along Cloutier Drive and through this underpass. Since it is located on two intersecting roads, a transportation theme seemed appropriate and fitting as numerous modes of transportation have been important to the development of this community. It was a substantial feat to collaborate with the entire community and get input from key stakeholders. The artist Sarah Collard tastefully incorporated all influences in this mural that truly represents St. Norbert s past and present. Take a drive to view this beautiful art piece! Left to right: Oril Hogan, Janice Lukes, Rolande Kirouac, Michelle Gervais and Julie Turenne-Maynard Sarah Collard Sarah Collard TOURISM IN MANITOBA S CAPITAL REGION On Monday, October 6th, Manitoba s Capital Region and the Economic Development Winnipeg Tourism Winnipeg hosted a Regional Tourism Workshop to facilitate the creation of a Capital Region Tourism Strategy in order to better position Manitoba s Capital Regions in the growing tourism industry. Present at this workshop were members from the Tourism Industry, Municipal Councillors, Provincial Representatives, Local Tour Operators, Rural Tourism Associations, Rivers West, to name a few. Together, we identified existing major tourism attractions, experiences and infrastructure. Then, we identified trails or circuits, based on themes of interest. The Regional Tourism Workshop led participants in a process that can be duplicated at the community level by participants to help create a Community Strategy in support of the Regional Approach. The Manitoba Capital Region is now working on refining the work and present it back to the representatives from each community for review and further consideration.

NEW EMERSON GOLF COURSE DEVELOPMENT IN FULL GEAR After over a year of planning and design, a crew of dedicated volunteers and local businesses from the Town of Emerson were pleased to receive support for the Province of Manitoba that enabled them to start construction of the new golf course located in the Town. Unique to the province, this recreational course will also showcase and provide interpretation of historical town facts and highlight the origins of some important Manitoba traditions such as the Countess of Dufferin. Since the first week of October, all equipment and labour by local construction crews and townspeople are being donated to assist in the development of the new golf course designed by architect Jacques Rollier. A fundraising campaign will be launched shortly. The 9 hole, 2872 yard, par 36 course is projected to be open to the public at the start of the 2016 golf season. REMEMBRANCE DAY - NOVEMBER 11 On Remembrance Day, we thank the thousands of Canadians, past and present who have strengthened our country with their example of service and sacrifice. We honour the infantry, air force, navy or marines, and the oft-forgotten cooks, drivers, mail clerks, medical team, IT and engineers, the vast support team that makes the on-the-ground efforts possible. We honour all women and men who serve and have served. This Remembrance Day allows us to acknowledge our appreciation for their contributions to our country's security. Remembrance Day 2014 is different because as Canadians we all are grieving the two soldiers who lost their lives on our own soil, in one tragic October week. Morris cemetery honors veterans The responsibility falls to us to make the effort to educate our young people about the sacrifices all veterans have made and that the freedom we enjoy in our country is not free. To every veteran, Canada owes a debt we cannot forget or repay, but we will always acknowledge. We remember our veterans and the price they have paid to safeguard us. We remember as well our current troops - Canada's future veterans - who continue the tradition of selflessly defending freedoms, both at home and abroad.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES Water Fund Application Deadline is December 15, 2014 WWF and Loblaw Companies Limited are proud to announce that applications are now being accepted for WWF s Loblaw Water Fund, a grant initiative open to Canadians working on the ground to address the major threats to and health of our water wealth. Canada is home to thousands of lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands - and many of these water bodies need our help to become and remain healthy. It s not an undertaking any individual or ground can do alone, which is why WWF and Loblaw are proud to support the very active freshwater community in its efforts to restore and manage our waters. The Loblaw Water Fund recognizes that we can do more together, supporting each other, that we can alone. The Loblaw Water Fund provides grants to registered charitable organizations and not-for-profits working on critical projects that aim to protect and restore the health or fresh water in Canada through direct on-the-ground initiatives. The Loblaw Water Fund supports action-oriented projects that take specific steps towards ecosystem restoration and/or the collection of data for long-term water monitoring. The grants are made possible through partial proceeds from Loblaw s charge-for-plastic shopping bag program in its stores, which has reduced the number of plastic shopping bags from their stores nationally by more than six billion since Application and Guideline for funding are available online at closing December 15, For questions, please contact Emily Giles, Freshwater Program Manager at waterfund@wwfcanada.org or ext Also, see the Waterfund Guidelines and the Proposal Form.
