6 Exhibitions Roman Gallery Chichester was first established by the Romans as the town of Noviomagus Reginorum, which translates as the new market of the proud people. After the Roman invasion and conquest the local tribe, known as the Regini, seem to have been led by a native ruler, Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus, who was one of the principal British supporters of the Romans. It was under Togidubnus that the first town on the site of Chichester was laid out as the tribal capital, the most important Roman centre in this part of the south-east. Telling the story of Roman Chichester and District from pre-roman invasion to the eventual decline and fall, the Roman Gallery showcases fragments of mosaic found within the city centre, the spectacular Roman bathhouse and other wonderful objects from the museum collections. 6

7 Cutlasses & Contraband; A Smuggler s Tale explores the history of smuggling in the Chichester District, from the popular types of contraband goods to the cunning ways in which smugglers concealed them. You can delve into some colourful local stories of smuggling, in particular the infamous story of the Hawkhurst Gang. The exhibition features an illuminating set of objects from The Novium s own collections. These include a talisman belonging to William Jackson, a member of the notorious A Smuggler s Tale Hawkhurst Gang, a cutlass, copper printing plates telling the story of the Hawkhurst Gang s raid on Poole Customs House as well as loans from the West Sussex Record Office and Littlehampton Museum. 7

8 Special Events Priory Park Archaeological Dig Tuesday, 10 July Tuesday, 24 July in Priory Park, Chichester Archaeological excavations in Priory Park in 2017 revealed part of a hot room of a bath house from a high status Roman town house. In 2018 the dig, led by James Kenny, Archaeology Officer at Chichester District Council, hopes to unearth the entire bathhouse and identify the warm room, the cold plunge bath and changing room. The masonry remains of the walls and underfloor heating system are remarkably well preserved, and this will be a rare opportunity to see the entire plan of a Roman building something not possible in Chichester for almost 1,600 years! This year s excavations will probably be best visited during the week starting Monday 16th July. A special day, during which our archaeologists will be revealing their findings in a series of public talks, will take place towards the end of the week. Located on Tower Street in the centre of Chichester, The Novium Museum was purpose built to show the remains of a Roman Bathhouse, which are uncovered for visitors to see. Ground Floor As you enter the museum, discover Chichester s rich Roman heritage with our ground floor Roman Gallery. Renovated in 2016 as a result of visitor feedback, the gallery, which guides you through the story of Roman Chichester, includes objects from excavations in the city centre, mosaic fragments and the uncovered archaeological remains of the Roman Bathhouse. Bosham Head The Bosham Head is a mystery. Some say it s the head of a Roman emperor from a long lost sculpture, but which Emperor, no one really knows. Chilgrove Mosaic Part of a late Roman design from Chilgrove Villa. A local farmer discovered the mosaic more than 50 years ago, while ploughing his field. 16
