The children were made aware of NETFISH and its activities, various aspects of shrimp farming, problems and disease control, conservation of marine resources, HACCP, capture fisheries, crafts & gear, hatchery management, nursery, rearing and NETFISH Monthly Report -August 2017 Page 3
5 stocking, pond preparation, integrated fish farming and fish quality management etc. Leaflets on conservation & fish quality were distributed and documentary films on conservation, pollution, brackish water fish farming, and Hilsa conservation etc. were showed to the participants. The school management appreciated NETFISH for such classes and requested to conduct such programme in near future. Also 2 programmes on fish quality & conservation were conducted for the students of Dhablat Lachman Parabesh High School, Sagar and Keuchia Nilkanta High School (H.S), Khejuri. VHSE programme at Seulipur Paschimbar High School In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month. Various aspects in connection with conservation of Hilsa in India & Bangladesh, trans-boundary issues, livelihood of Hilsa fishers, policies to conserve Hilsa in lower part and upper region of river have been discussed in the forum SCO & NGO Meeting with 20 fisher women at Beguakhali, Sagar, South 24 Parganas, regarding formation of SHG and production of hygienic dryfish. The fisher women had shown their willingness for involving in the livelihood project on dry fish. SCO along with officials of Paradeep Harbour Management Society, Fisheries Dept. officials and member NGO took part in the event and given proper awareness to the participants including 50 boat crews and boat owners, on harmful impacts of illegal chemicals in consumers. SCO also requested all the participants to come out with a solution on how to prevent and control the use of illegal chemicals in fishery products. 7 had the opinion that a rapid test kit is required to identify the presence of harmful chemicals in the fishery product during auction period. Also, they all agreed to avoid the use of illegal chemicals in fishery product in the harbour. The process of making different varieties of value added fishery NETFISH Monthly Report -August 2017 Page 6
8 products, hygienic standards to be maintained, the market demand for the semi processed fishery products, how to seek the market linkages, packaging of products in attractive pouches etc. were discussed in the programmes. The trainees were encouraged to produce value added fishery products rather than selling raw fish, to fetch much better income. On 24 th August 2017, an exposure visit to a fish processing and export unit at Visakhapatnam was arranged for 10 nos. of Tuna fishing boat owners of Pudimadaka fish landing center with an aim to introduce them to hygienic handling of Tuna fish for Export. The programme was organized by member NGO- DFYWA. There is a need to fishermen to visit the export units to observe the standards maintained in the process plants so as to implement the same while at work in boats and harbours. The MD and Managing partner of the company, during the programme, expressed their support to the fishers by keeping a purchase center at Pudimadaka for semi processed fish. The visit became a platform to the exporters and primary producers for developing a business linkage between them. Exposure visit for boat owners In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month. Dept of Fisheries has agreed to convene the meeting at the earliest DD MPEDA, CE, SCO & NGO Monitored the construction of the NETFISH model dry fish unit at Mangamaripata, Vizag and gave suggestions to use the facility for training fisher women for production of value added fishery products CE, SCO & NGO Had a discussion with the President of Visakhi Mechanized boat operator s welfare association, Vizag about fishery conservation activities and harbour up gradation.
