4 STUDY ABROAD STUDY IN SYDNEY, SEE AUSTRALIA Sydney is one of the most liveable and picturesque global cities. With the world s largest natural harbour, 100 kilometres of coastline and beaches to explore, and an abundance of cultural activities year round, it s no wonder that Australia s largest city is consistently ranked internationally as one of the top 12 urban centres to visit or live in. LANDMARKS Some of the most famous Australian landmarks are here, including the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach and the Blue Mountains. Australia is also the proud home of the oldest living culture on earth. Indigenous Australians trace their history back 50,000 years and living in Sydney, you can glimpse their culture through their art, music, dance, stories and historic sites. With its cobblestone streets and historic sandstone buildings interspersed with contemporary galleries, museums, restaurants, pubs and clubs, The Rocks and the area near Circular Quay are windows on Australia s European history that began with the landing of the First Fleet in Today, Sydney is a thriving metropolis of almost five million people with a third of its population born overseas, making it one of the most multicultural cities in the world. It sprawls across 2,200 square kilometres and 600 suburbs. With worldclass opportunities to learn skills and gain new experiences, such as climbing over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, skydiving or scuba diving, studying in Australia could change your life. 4 FOOD CLIMATE The people of Sydney, known as Sydneysiders, trace their collective heritage back to more than 170 countries. The city offers a taste of global cuisine through thousands of cafes and restaurants; from food trucks to five star eateries run by some of the world s most feted chefs. Fresh, reasonably-priced, locally-grown produce, meat and seafood is also available year round from groceries and markets. Sydney s climate is comfortable and temperate year round; summer is from December to February, while autumn is March to May, winter June to August, and spring September to November. Generally, January and February are warm, while winters are mild. Average temperature (low-high): SUMMER: December February degrees Celsius CULTURE If you love shopping, you ll find Australian designers and global fashion brands in boutiques, large shopping malls or at street markets across the city. You also won t want to miss the year-round art, music, food, theatre, film and design festivals that put Sydney on the world cultural map. Sydney s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Sydney Aquarium and Taronga Zoo are all world-class attractions. The city is also home to the Sydney Theatre Company, the Sydney Dance Company and Opera Australia, as well as many other arts organisations. OUTDOORS A visit to Sydney is incomplete without enjoying the outdoor activities the city has to offer. Learn how to surf, paddle board or snorkel off the many ocean or harbour beaches. Head off on a walk, cycle or jog in one of the many city or coastal parks where you might stop for a picnic or barbecue to enjoy the view and the abundant bird life. AUTUMN: March May degrees Celsius WINTER: June August 9 17 degrees Celsius SPRING: September November degrees Celsius BUSINESS As Australia s business capital, Sydney is where you ll find the head offices of more multinational companies and banks than anywhere else in the country and as a modern, metropolitan city, it s the gateway to the Asia Pacific and an ideal place to do business. TRAVEL CENTRE With the country s biggest airport, and as the centre of many bus and train transport hubs, Sydney is well-suited as a base to visit the rest of Australia. Take a weekend to shop in Melbourne, visit Canberra the country s capital for the annual tulip festival Floriade, or make a longer trip to the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland or even Kakadu in the Top End of northern Australia.

18 THE FUN SIDE OF LIFE SPORT Jiaxin Li CHINA (BACHELOR OF DESIGN AND COMMUNICATIONS) I have always wanted to be an international journalist or a designer. Sydney is an international, multicultural city with beautiful scenery. I also thought about studying in the Netherlands, France or the US but Sydney was actually my dream place. It has a more peaceful pace of life than where I come from in southeast China in Guangzhou. I am studying Design and Communications at Western Sydney University and have been really inspired by the other students in my class, my classmates. I couldn t have survived without them. They have really helped me, and I have made lots of local friends. I feel a lot of gratitude and thankfulness to them. I admit it has been very difficult at times but they have been there for me. I have had some anxiety getting used to my new life here but now I really feel a sense of achievement. Living away from home in another country, you really grow up. You do things you never imagined you could. I have found my own part-time job and on weekends I go travelling; I have gone into Sydney to Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. Another time I went skydiving in Wollongong. I could see the Pacific Ocean below me and the whole of the city. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I really appreciate the education I have received here at Western Sydney University. I have really grown as a person here. As a Study Abroad student at, you ll spend a significant amount of time studying, but you ll also have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the fun side of University life. Join in a range of sport, recreation and other activities every week and meet some new friends or catch up with old ones. Feeling more connected to the University and Western Sydney will ensure you get the most out of your stay in Australia. Choose from more than 150 Student Clubs and Societies that reflect the diverse nature of the student population. Why not consider the Medieval Club, Amnesty, Cheerleading Club, Western Sydney Women s Collective or the Anime Academy? The Out & About trip list open to all students includes one bush walk each month, overnight camping, visits to the beach, to the Snowy Mountains to go skiing and snowboarding in winter and other regular adrenalin experiences. The University also puts on pop-up events to encourage students to meet and socialise. It might be a Table Tennis Social, free summer breakfasts or an open-air concert. Sydney was actually my dream place... I have really grown as a person here. How about a social lunchtime game of Quidditch (of Harry Potter fame) or Dodgeball? Sport is actively trying to get all Australian and international students playing sport. Why not participate in a social sport, a sport club, inter-varsity tournaments or the University Games? Then there s the Uni Battle, an event that brings together students from universities around Australia to play sports such as Beach Handball, Beach Soccer, Beach Touch Football, Dodgeball or Softball. All campuses have a range of sporting facilities that include: Outdoor gym equipment Tennis courts Basketball courts Sporting fields Gymnasiums Professional hockey fields Oval with night match lights Track and field facilities Netball courts Grass hockey ground Connect Fitness has a network of commercial fitness centres across various campuses where you can attend fitness classes to strengthen your body and mind. 18

24 Nicole Macmillan UK (BACHELOR OF BUSINESS) Living here in the Western Sydney University Village in Parramatta, I have really learned how to be independent, living away from home in another country. I have had to buy food for myself, and I am slowly learning how to cook. I was initially a really bad cook but I am going quite well now; I can t depend on my mum and sisters. It is really easy to make friends here you bump into people at meals and in your classes. It s such a welcoming environment. I have made so many friends from Australia and also from all over Europe. When I travel in Australia, I will have friends to stay with and also when I go back home to the UK. I have already gone travelling in New Zealand with some of the friends I made here. Back home, I have friends I have known for years and never travelled with and now I was travelling with people I had known for only a few months. It was kind of surreal but we really had an amazing time. I especially loved Queenstown. I was also quite successful on my exams which was quite a relief, and now I have just got a job as a Residence Assistant which means I will be helping other new students like me settle in to the Village. I think that coming to Australia to study has been a great decision for me. It s really easy to make friends here you bump into people at meals and in your classes. It s such a welcoming environment. 24
