4 Sustainable Development : MAIN FEATURE 4 A s an infrastructure organization, GVK remains committed to improve the quality of life of the communities it caters to, thus adding to the overall economic and social progress of the nation. Sustainability has always remained the nucleus of GVK s commercial success stories. Besides providing optimum services to the travellers, as global airport developers, GVK has always endeavoured to provide the highest level of offerings to all stakeholders and ensures the long-term well-being of the community and the environment that it serves. GVK was the first to implement sustainability initiatives in India s airports sector, thanks mainly to the vision of Mr G V Sanjay Reddy. It was his firm intent and passion for setting newer global benchmarks, that has propelled this drive at both our Mumbai and Bengaluru airports. The integrated Terminal 2 at GVK CSIA is an iconic landmark for Mumbai as well as the entire country. Despite being one of the most constrained airports, it is not only designed to be a benchmark in design and architecture but is also one of the greenest airports in the country. MIAL is working towards turning the airport carbon neutral by the end of 2017, by using every inch of space that it has, to generate renewable energy. A mesh of solar panels is being created to use the part of the Mithi river that flows through the airport as real estate to generate 600 KW of energy. Amid landings and takeoffs of hundreds of flights every day, MIAL has been able to create space for 2 MW of solar panels atop old terminals and aims to cross 7 MW capacity generation within the next two years. The installation of LED lights at the terminals instead of the incandescent bulbs has also significantly reduced the overall energy consumption. MIAL has also ensured that only CNG or battery-operated vehicles are used for baggage handling instead of the diesel run vehicles. GVK CSIA s in-house waste disposal facility helps convert organic food waste into compost which is then used to cater to the airport s green cover. Around one million tonne of food waste is generated daily at the airport which is Dr GVK Reddy at Arrivals Corridor T2, GVK CSIA Oct-Dec 2016

In addition to the continuous monitoring system, various environmental parameters are measured and reported by CSIA. MIAL has also hired the services of MoEF authorized laboratory to carry out periodic environmental sampling of ambient air quality, ambient noise levels, wastewater quality, storm water, DG set emissions etc. Such significant measures have earned GVK CSIA the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. To enhance green area coverage in the airport vicinity, MIAL has been partnering with Sanjay Gandhi National Park for over four years and has continuously contributed towards environmental protection and sustainability of the bio diversity at the national park. SPECIAL FEATURE GVK EMRI Mother & Child ambulance GVK EMRI is doing a lot of work, especially in terms of public-private partnership (PPP), in Uttar Pradesh along with the State s Health Department. What kind of initiatives are underway? In UP, with the initiation of the government, we are running 108 Basic Life Support ambulances (108 Samajwadi Swasthya Sewa) and 102 ambulance services are run with an integrated effort of the government under Jananni Sishu Suraksha. We are running 181 Women Helpline Services with the initiation of the UP Govt. 108 ambulance services cater to the need for any kind of emergency. However, 102 is for pregnancyrelated cases and sick children upto one year of age. These 108 ambulances are equipped with elementary life-saving equipment. One can avail 108 services for reaching the nearest government hospital, district hospitals or other higher state hospitals in case of any emergency. 12 SPECIAL FEATURE 12 support and initiation in running 102 and 108 ambulances has been a huge factor that has helped reduce the IMR and MMR. The quick and medical aided transportation through 108 services during the Golden Hour has saved lots of lives and we are committed to this human cause. What kind of measures are undertaken to overcome challenges related to operating in Uttar Pradesh? UP is a big state and has the maximum population. There is huge diversity in this state. There are times when our ambulance faces annoyed mob and even after reaching the scene on time, people sometimes don t support but create a troublesome situation not only for the ambulance but also for the staff. We look forward to the support of people in such situations. Govt officials and administration has always been there for us. This will help us serve the needy in a better way. Through our IEC activities, we try to create awareness and knowledge among people. We have also identified a few Zero Call Villages and have done the IEC activities to create awareness about 102 and 108 services. There have been situations when the ambulances were not allowed to pass through the heavy traffic, for which we got tremendous support from the government and local administrative officers. How is GVK EMRI planning to adopt technology, especially to monitor operations and vehicles? Please elaborate on the recent mobile application for 102/108 launched by the Hon ble Chief Minister. Monitoring operations and vehicles have become easier and convenient with the help of technologies adopted in our system. We have installed GPS which shows the active real-time locations for the ambulances across the state. Also, there is a mobile application launched by the State Govt which has a lot of features that helps the users/beneficiaries to access and utilize the services provided by 108 and 102 on their fingertips. The users can track the real-time location of the ambulances that he/ she has requested. The feedback of the availed services can also be shared using this mobile app. The app is easily accessible and is a major aid to the common people. Also, within the organization there are a few technical tools and applications that have equipped our staff and have brought an integrated approach of work across the organization. The app doing so is Blueflock. How do you envision the emergency services in India? What is the future of the emergency services and scope for improvement in India? Being the largest player in the segment of emergency services across the globe, we see India having a huge requirement for emergency services. As a developing economy, India is still working on various factors like infrastructure and roads which are major causes of the accidents that lead to the need of emergency services. Fact File - Uttar Pradesh 108 Ambulance Service (108 SamajwadiSwasthyaSewa) Launched On: 14 Sep, 2012 No. of ambulances: National Ambulances Service Launched On: 17 Jan, 2014 No. of ambulances: 2270 Similarly, we are not very calculative of our eating habits that lead to many diseases, which again creates the need of emergency services. 49 K & Joy of Sharing Contest Sabke Saath Diwali T his Diwali was very special to me because of all the kind people I met. The festival of lights was celebrated differently by my family. As a social initiative, we decided to help the less fortunate. It is not uncommon to see the families who are forced to sleep on the streets because of their inability to provide for themselves. They are often ignored by the society. We wanted to help those who we usually find selling balloons, cleaning public washrooms, selling toys or those who strive all day, only to earn pennies. Also, there are labourers who work 12 hrs a day at construction sites and still find it difficult to fulfill the basic needs of their families. Not having adequate clothes to keep themselves warm, these families are seen shivering during cold winter nights along the roadsides. During winters, the situation was only going to worsen. To tackle this in the smallest way possible, I reached out to the residents of my locality. We asked them to contribute their unused, unfit or spare clothes for these hard-working souls on the streets. They kindly obliged. For about a week, the residents kept bringing in clothes they found would be useful for the people on the streets. Meanwhile, me, along with my dad, mother and sister surveyed all the places in our town where we could help such people. We segregated the clothes that we received for toddlers, teens, men and women. The night dresses were donated to a small old-age home as we thought they would be best used there. We distributed the other clothes to people at the roadsides. The poor kids were delighted to have new clothes and their parents, of course, were extremely happy. We helped as many such families as we could. We also distributed some clothes to the workers at a construction site. It was heartening to see how joyful the workers were to take home new clothes for their families on this auspicious occasion. Nothing encourages more when you see your small efforts making huge impact in the lives of others. WORK. FUN. FAMILY 49 Contributed by Siddhesh, s/o Ms Akshata Nayak, GVK CSIA OCT-DEC 2016
