1 Volume 4 - Issue 3 March 1st, 2019 The 3rd month of the year brings us Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, Daylight Savings Time, and the start of Spring. In the Georgian calendar, the calendar that most of the world uses, March is the third month of the year. However, it was the first month and named Martius in the early Roman calendar. Later, the ancient Romans made January to be the first month so March became the third month, which always had 31 days. In March, the winter ends and spring begins. In the northern half of the world, spring begins in March 19-21, which is the day when the sun is directly over the equator. At this time, the animals end hibernation and begin to show up. Below are some fun facts about March: 1. The birthstone for March is the aquamarine. 2. The zodiac signs for March are Aries (March 21 - April 19) and Pisces (February 19 - March 20) 3. The birth flower for March is daffodil. This month has some GREAT events coming your way - Mardi Gras Celebration, St. Patty s Day, Donuts & Coffee, Ladies Night Out Bunco, 2 Dinner Out nights, Movie Night, 2 Pool Parties, Soup & Salad, Saturday Morning Breakfast, Karaoke with KEN and an Old Fashion Potluck. Be sure to check the events calendar and check the bulletin board in the WWS Clubhouse for event details and sign-up sheets. Remember to KEEP your WWS Newsletter so you can reference it for events & information! Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. Have a FUNtastic month.. Donna The beginnings of Mardi Gras came from Medieval Europe. In 1703, French settlers held the first organized Mardi Gras celebration in Mobile, AL Carnival celebrations in the United States start on January 6 which is the Feast of Ephiphany/King s Day. This day is a Christian celebration commemorated in various parts of the world, marking the unveiling of the divinity of Jesus. Celebrations continue up until the day before Ash Wednesday which is known as Fat Tuesday or French for Mardi Gras. This day marks the last 24 hours of splurging and eating rich, fatty food before the start of the ritual fasting period of Lent. And no kidding, when midnight hits at the end of Fat Tuesday in New Orleans, the cops clear the touristy areas 1
2 A Note from the President We are again in the process of regrouping our HOA board. We welcome Charlotte Lamont to the WWS HOA Board in the position of treasurer. An audit of the books was completed by Patti Rocco, Maria Economou and Barb Reeves before the new treasurer took over. An HOA computer was approved and purchased to be used by the treasurer and a program for keeping the accounts. We need to keep records for 7 years and it should not be on a personal computer. We also welcomed Pat Schortman to the board in the position of 2nd Vice President. Both Charlotte and Pat have completed the FMO training program required. Patti Rocco and Maria Economou have volunteered to serve on the WWS Welcome Committee. If you have not received a welcome bag as a new resident please contact one of them. I personally want to thank all of them for volunteering to serve our community. We ask that if you have an issue you want the board to address please come to the board meeting and present it. The board can better discuss the issue with you on an individual basis with less interruptions than at a membership meeting. The social committee has been busy. Our Valentine's dinner dance was a huge success. DJ Steve had everyone on the dance floor. This month we welcome back Solid Gold to the community to celebrate Mardi Gras. A corned beef dinner dance is being planned for St Patty's day. We need volunteers to help keep these events going in the community and appreciate any time you can give us. Thank you to all that support us. Pat Hickey, WWS HOA President Add: Remove: Pat Hickey - cell phone March s Phonebook Updates Change: Pam Rank & Fred Williams 7049 W.
