TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE NOVEMBER 2018 LINK UP HEAD BOY AND GIRL PRINCIPAL'S REPORT BY BILL MANN In the time-honoured tradition, as Hedland Senior High School student body said goodbye to the Class of 2018, it also said hello to the new school leaders. willingness to be champions of change, dedication to the student council and their belief and drive to improve the place they and their peers spend most of their days. Tess Mellberg and Bilal Rashidi presented their last address as Head Girl and Head Boy at the Year 12 Whole School Assembly before passing on their titles to Year 11 students Angelo Damien and Annabella Knight. During their acceptance speech the two leaders pledged to represent Hedland Senior High School with pride and endeavour to be leaders within the school community and listen to their peers for ideas, feedback and constructive criticism. Angelo and Annabella were awarded the positions after interviews with the school council leadership team including Student Council Coordinator Gerhardt Van Dyk, Year 11 Coordinator Kristen Lilly, Deputy Principal Ryan Govan and Principal Bill Mann. As their first act as 2019 Head Boy and Head Girl, Angelo and Annabella will represent Hedland Senior High School with pride at the Town of Port Hedland Remembrance Day Ceremony. According to the interview panel, Angelo and Annabella were chosen because of their Congratulations to Angelo and Annabella, we wish you every success as our school leaders. TERM 4 IS ALWAYS A VERY BUSY TIME FOR OUR SCHOOL. SAYING FAREWELL TO OUR GRADUATING YEAR 12 S, WELCOMING OUR INCOMING YEAR 7 S, FINALISING TIMETABLING DECISIONS AND SELECTING A FEW NEW STAFF, WRITING END-OFYEAR REPORTS AND MOST IMPORTANTLY MAKING SURE OUR STUDENTS FINISH THE YEAR SUCCESSFULLY. Some year 11 s are off to TAFE for further training, a number of year 10 s will be involved in trialling their involvement in the Trade Training Centre, and ATAR taster experiences for your 10 s will make their year 11 study more successful in This school offers an amazing set of programs for our students that will set them up well for next year far in excess of any offerings I have seen in any high school in WA, and a credit to the staff here. One issue we are looking at addressing as a priority is the state of our grounds and some of our buildings. Large areas of red dirt and some buildings that need a make-over do not encourage students to take pride in our school. The physical education staff urgently need an undercover area for sports classes. In general, the school is in need of refreshing and refurbishing. CONTINUES ON PAGE 2. HEDLAND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL S REPORT cont. We have a submission presently being considered by the Education Department and I am hopeful we can start this work early next year. SCHOOL POOL After what seems like forever, the Hedland Senior High School pool is back up and running! Our Year 11 Outdoor Ed were the lucky ones to christen the pool last month as they underwent an Outdoor Ed assessment. The students were also the first to use the new kayaks the school purchased for Outdoor Ed students as part of a BHP grant for school Aquatics. A lot of work has been done over the last 6 months on developing the school s business plan for the next 4 years. All Independent Public Schools are required to have a BP that sets out clearly the strategic intentions for the school, and identifies specific targets that will be used to measure progress over time. Our BP will cover the four key themes: Engaged learners; Empowered teachers; Enabled parents; and Enriched leadership. I believe our school is now well placed to deliver excellence across these key areas, and I also believe the Hedland community will be well pleased with the high quality education young people experience here. We intend to be a school committed to success. Finally, I want to stress on all parents and carers that all teachers expect students in class on time and ready for learning every day. There are still a number of students arriving late to school that s not acceptable, particularly when parents are dropping them off with a burger and thick shake in their hand. We are serious about our commitment to success, and I look forward to your support over the coming weeks and next year. BILL MANN Principal V SWANS BROOME TRIP The pool will now be available for use in classes involving an aquatic aspect to them, including but not limited to Outdoor Ed and Phys Ed Studies. Outdoor Ed is a branch of the Phys Ed Department, which focuses on learning about self, others and the environment while incorporating a number of learning outcomes from other subjects such as Phys Ed, Geography, History, Science, Maths, English and Art. Almost 40 students in the V Swans Kicking Goals and Shooting Goals programs hit the road and travelled to Broome to compete in the 2018 V Swans Broome Cup. The students competed in football and netball matches against the likes of Broome SHS and St Mary s College. The students were selected to compete in the cup by program managers and classroom teachers based on high work ethic, good behaviour and attendance at school. Despite going down to Broome Senior High School in both competitions, all students played valiantly, with the Kicking Goals students teaming up with St Mary s Senior High School in the football grand final to take on Broome SHS. Netballers Chloe Glasson and Nini Pangestu were voted as best players by umpires after their day of competition while footballer Amity Stewart kicked the first goal for her team s first match. Congratulations to all the students for their hard work, passion, sportsmanship and behaviour in representing Hedland Senior High School with pride

DATES TO REMEMBER MILLI MAYA For some students, engaging in school can be a difficult task. This semester, students in the Milli Maya Engagement Program have continued to make leaps and bounds improving students attendance, behaviour and engagement. Since Sandra Buzzard took over as Program Coordinator in Semester 2, her team has increased attendance by 8% between Semester 1 and Term 3, with 11 of the 18 students improving their personal attendance rates during that time. In Semester 1, Milli Maya students accounted for 25% of all suspensions, however in Term 3 they accounted for only 10%. The students have also reduced their days suspension going from 34% of all days suspension in Semester 1 to 16% of all days suspension in Term 3. Behaviour has also improved in the number of reports they each receive a term. One student has gone from 34 behavior reports to 0 and another from 12 to 0. In the program, good behavior and attendance is rewarded with a Friday Excursion where students have the opportunity to put their social skills to action in a real world setting. Recently, the students travelled to Karijini for a week long camping trip and Cape Kerauden where they received outstanding feedback from staff and members of the community. 5 NOV Year 11 Exams begin 9 NOV Year 11 last day 12 NOV Year 10 and 11 Transition Week 19 NOV PHEP Year 7-9 UWA Excursion 21 NOV Year 12 Awards Presentation Ceremony 22 NOV Public Board Meeting 27 NOV Year 6/7 Teacher Transition Forum 4 DEC V Swans 100 Club Morning Tea 6 DEC V Swans Awards Presentation 7 DEC Year 10 Last Day 10 DEC PHEP Year Camp 13 DEC Last Day of Term 4 Dates are subject to last minute changes please phone administration on for any updates. STAFF RECOGNITION At Hedland Senior High School we aim to attract, recruit, coach and retain high quality teaching staff who possess specialist skills and experience. This term we are glad to announce that two of our staff have been recognised for their achievements and contributions to teaching. Our Head of Science, Sara Finn, was recognised in the Curtin University Teaching Excellence Award which formed part of the 2018 Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards. Mrs Finn has been a valuable member of our school community for 4 years, making her way from graduate teacher to HOLA. We congratulate Mrs Finn and are eager to see her continue to grow as a teacher. Our Head of The Arts, Laura Francis, will be taking over the position of Program Coordinator - School Development in the place of our Deputy Principal Ryan Govan. Ms Francis has been working with Mr Govan over the course of 2018 in developing our Hedland Senior High School Business Plan and developing our school. We are excited to see Ms Francis take over the role and continue the school improvement that Ryan has successfully done this year. Congratulations to Mrs Finn and Ms Francis on your achievements, we re lucky to have to and are excited to see your careers develop! ToPH SURVEY The Town of Port Hedland is conducting its Annual Survey in an effort to understand community priorities for the future. To complete the survey visit: tophsurvey2018 MRS SARA FINN MS LAURA FRANCIS

LIGHTNING CARNIVAL On Friday 26 October, a group of 50 Hedland Senior High School students from years 7-10 hit the road to take on Karratha schools in the annual Interschool Lightning Carnival. The students played valiantly and showed a high level of sportsmanship, representing Hedland and the school with pride. TRANSITION WEEK Term 4 at Hedland Senior High School is all about change. Year 6 s transitioning into the big world of high schools and Year 10 s leaving lower school behind to begin their pathway to career success in ATAR and VET studies. In the last week of October, we welcomed more than 200 students into the Hedland Senior High School community from the surrounding 5 primary school s in Hedland. The anticipation and excitement was high as the students filed into the Matt Dann Theatre, Monday October 29, to be welcomed by the Year 7 Leadership Team. The students spent the week living life as a high schooler, navigating between classes for maths and science, discovering the specialist programs available to them in 2019 and, most importantly, meeting new friends. The entire school community welcomes the Year 6 s and we re excited to welcome them again as the 2019 Year 7 cohort. Following Year 6 Transition, our Year 10 students will be transitioning into Year 11 and buckling up for their 2 year pathway to their career goals. In Term 3, the students were counselled and mentored about the big step into ATAR or VET studies and now they will get to finally take that step. We wish them all luck in their transition and look forward to seeing them lead the school as upper school class men and women. CONGRATULATIONS TRACEY SWAMI We would like to congratulate Tracey Swami, a long time member of our school community. During October, Tracey was recognised by Netball WA at the Jill Macintosh Medal dinner for her contribution to netball in the North West. Tracey join the Hedland Senior High School community in 2008 when V Swans Shooting Goals began at the school and has been a staple of the Hedland sporting community in and out of school since. Tracey has helped an untold number of athletes and coaches to do things they wouldn t have thought possible and she is an invaluable member of our school community. Congratulations Tracey! The year 9/10 boys unfortunately lost on the buzzer in their basketball final as well as the year 9/10 touch team. However, Rashim Pearson was named Most Valued Player in the year 9/10 touch competition. The school also discovered how much teenagers can eat after the bus nearly sold KFC out of all their chicken! The entire Phys Ed Department and school would like to commend the students on their attitude and enjoyment of the day and their positive feedback since.

V SWANS SHOOTING GOALS NEW ZEALAND TOUR Twelve Hedland Senior High School Shooting Goals students kicked off Term 4 by saying kia ora to New Zealand as they arrived in Auckland for the annual Shooting Goals New Zealand Tour. Heading straight to Rainbow s End theme park after a whopping 8+ travel across the country, as per tradition, the girls got a good hit of adrenaline to wake themselves up. After a good nights rest, it was competition time. First up, the girls travelled to Wellington where the first stop was the Aussie Diamonds Training Session. The girls got to see how hard their training sessions needed to be to make it to the big leagues and even made the Diamonds Instagram story that day. Next up was a full day of netball. The girls competed in a friendly match against the Whitby Waves Netball Club where they went down by 4 goals, Despite the loss the girls showed excellent sportsmanship. The girls were also treated to a training session with Samoan National Coach, Frances Solia where they were put through their paces and learned new skills. It was time for recovery after two days of travel and netball. The girls shopped til they dropped and played tourist at the Zealandia Bird Sanctuary. Finally it was time for the highly anticipated, Constellation Cup between the Aussie Diamonds and New Zealand Kiwi Ferns where the girls made sure to show their Aussie pride and snap a few pictures with the players. It wasn t all Netball however, throughout the tour the girls learnt about New Zealand culture, wildlife and goethermal activity in the country by visiting places such as the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Park and Tamaki Maori Village. The Shooting Goals girls were absolute superstars! They received many positive comments about the way the girls interacted with the young kiwi netballers as well as the professional Aussie Diamonds. The school and Shooting Goals girls would like to thank our financial supporters, of which this trip wouldn t have been possible. From Shooting Goals major partner BHP and our tour supporters, Pilbara Ports Authority, Town of Port Hedland and Hedland Netball Association.

THE ARTS A handful of Visual Arts students spent the day with renowned portrait artist Mark Tweedie earlier this month thanks to the help of FORM: Building a State of Creativity. The students ranged from Years 8 to 10 and were chosen based on their achievements in visual arts so far this year as well as their capacity to extend their skills. Throughout the workshops, the students were able to hear from Mark about his work, process and journey as an artist as well as learn new techniques in painting portraits with acrylic paint and various painting mediums to experiment with different textures and finishes. Visual Arts teacher Ms Siciliano praised the students for their behaviour and willingness to learn and evolve in the visual arts. I am really impressed with their engagement when Mark was talking, he teaches in a completely different way than the students have been taught recently, so seeing them take what he said on and apply it in the workshop was fantastic, she said. Mark Tweedie is a Western Australian painter whose work is characterised by themes of ageing, memory and family. Thank you to Mark, FORM and the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery for helping us facilitate this experience for our students.

SUCCESSFULLY PARENTING TEENS IN HEDLAND POSITIVE PARENTING SEMINARS TRIPLE P - POSITIVE PARENTING SEMINARS TERM 4, 2018 Most parents have times when they find their teenager s behaviour challenging. The Triple P Positive Parenting Program is one of the world s most effective parenting programs. Triple P is designed to give parents the skills they need to raise confident, responsible and competent teenagers. Research has shown it works across cultures, socio-economic groups and in many different family structures. Triple P doesn t tell people how to parent. Rather, it offers simple and practical strategies that parents can adapt to suit their own values, beliefs and needs. The benefits can be dramatic and long-lasting. All parents of adolescents aged years are invited to attend free Triple P seminars on offer at Hedland Senior High School. Parents can attend the first of three seminars in Term 4 with the remaining two seminars on offer in Term 1, SESSION: Seminar 1: Raising Responsible Teenagers WHEN: Thursday 22 November 2018 TIME: 5pm -7pm VENUE: Hedland Senior High School COST: Free - however bookings are essential For more information or to book please pick up a registration flyer from the Hedland Senior High School Administration or Student Services Office or register online through the following web-link and search South Hedland in the Find a Session section.
