2 Tokoroa Host Lions 50 th Jubilee From the DG s Desk Weekly Jottings: Clocks forward this morning, with a glorious sunny day to follow let s hope it continues and puts a shine into everyone s hearts. Don t tell the tailtwister if you got caught out. Thank you to all the clubs who have submitted their MMR s on time and to those who have put in Activity Reports. Membership numbers are up slightly this month at present we have a net gain for the month of four, but still a net loss of one overall this year. In my travels around the clubs it is great to see new members being inducted, so it would be really good to see more positive growth during October to break the loss cycle. The Activity Reports show funds raised by the clubs at US$141,698 in the past three months. Great work to the 33 clubs who have put in the reports imagine how much it would be if all 67 clubs reported. Matamata Club was saddened to lose long-standing member Jack Kirkwood last week. Jack was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship recently and had been a stalwart of the club for some 54 years. We extend our condolences to his wife Gwen and family. Visits this week to Whakatane Club-watch out for the Berry Festival in January in Whakatane; Te Puke Kiwicoast where once again it was Odd Shoe Night with lots of laughs and fun then a combined meeting of the Rotorua Host and Rotorua Geyserland clubs on Wednesday. Lions Clubs International will officially mark World Sight Day in Istanbul, Turkey on October International President Wayne A Madden will lead the events, which will include screenings focusing on diabetic eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy. Since 1988 Lions World Sight Day, held annually in October, has focused attention on eliminating preventable blindness and improving sight. On World Sight Day, Lions clubs around the world conduct special sight-related projects including: collecting eyeglasses; conducting vision and diabetes screenings; planning educational programmes to inform their communities about the importance of eye health and diseases such as diabetes that can impair sight. Club Home (Landing) Web Page: Will Your Club Be Next? : Currently 21 clubs have taken up the opportunity of marketing their club to the public with interesting articles and photos and it is FREE. Here is a golden opportunity for your club to showcase themselves to the public and ensure the public can easily find their way around and understand what Lions actually do and how they can ultimately join an active and vibrant organisation. There is also the facility for Members Only pages, designed primarily for club members to easily find information relevant to their own club and contains links to the International website. To go online contact District Website Administrator PDG Robert Miller; syderstone@xtra.co.nz or phone (07) "Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced." District Governor Sara Patrick and Graham Reporoa Lions Club Cancer Lodge Donation Last night Reporoa Lions Club presented Sasima Pearce (Income Development Manager for the Cancer Society) with a cheque for $47,000.00, the proceeds so far from our cull cow fundraiser for the Waikato Cancer Lodge appeal, and at this stage there are still about 40 cows outstanding, so hopefully there will be quite a bit more to come. The evening, held at the Reporoa Memorial Hall, was combined with our visit from DG Sara Patrick. The photo is of Sasima, Paul Gibson (Reporoa Lion who was the instigator of the fund raiser) David Chatterton (Reporoa Lions President) and Sara, and of course the cow who featured in our promotional material. The cow is wearing one of the pink ear tags which were kindly donated by RD1, Reporoa, and each and every farmer in the district was given one of these to use on their donated cow. Businesses and individuals in the wider Reporoa area were also approached and almost everyone donated in one way or another. A large number of people in the area have used the Waikato Cancer Lodge and so it isn't difficult to generate sympathy for the cause. Reporoa Lions Christine Gibson Cheesmaking Reminder Lions Ngongotaha's Cheese and Chocolate making instruction is on Sat 6th and Sunday 7th of October. For a real fun day and with instruction and learning, be in. As we all know Ngongotaha Lions put on a great show and if you miss this

3 one your missing something outstanding. Contact John Smale Ph or for information and tickets. Ngongotaha Lions John Smale Night Vision Goggles for the Bay Trust Rescue Helicopter We are pleased to update you all on the Night Vision Goggles Project. I m very pleased with the response we have had so far, With contributions received from only 9 clubs so far we have passed the halfway mark towards our goal of $10,000 I would like to acknowledge the Lions & Lioness clubs that have contributed so far: Reporoa Lions $1000 Rotorua East Lions $1000 Whakatane Sunshine Coast Lions $1000 Edgecumbe Lions $600 Pohutukawa Branch club of Ohope $500 Taneatua Lions $500 Waihi Beach Lioness $500 Whakatane Kopeopeo $250 Geyserland Lions $200 If any other Clubs would also like to make a donation it would really be appreciated. All cheques should be made out to Rotorua East Lions Club, PO Box 886, Rotorua A receipt will be forthcoming. PDG Len Jenkins and pilot Barry Vincent are prepared to speak to any Club wishing to learn more about this project. To make contact with them, or for more information, please contact Zone 8 Chairman Kevin Jensen (s.k.jensen@xtra.co.nz). Rotorua East Murray Goucher Did you wear Odd Shoes? September 14 th (and indeed several other days in September) were remarkable for the number of people (including Lions) who were spotted wearing outrageously mismatched shoes. Yes it was all about Odd Shoe Day. This promotion was designed to let the public know about Camp Quality and the wonderful work it does with children who are struggling with cancer. It was also to encourage financial support which is very much needed in this economic climate. Thanks to all of the Lions who got into the spirit of Odd Shoe day which was all about injecting a bit of fun and good humour into our often mundane lives. There have been some wonderful stories and photos. Lions have really got behind this event which will become a feature of our springtime in future years. If you weren t part of it this year plan to participate in Keep an eye out for the advance publicity. Thanks District 202L You were great.
