A message from Peter This being my first edition of Port Talk, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself and express how pleased I am to be leading the GPC team. I have held numerous senior management roles throughout Australia over the past 20 years, my most recent being Project Director for Building Queensland, and I have previously worked as a consultant providing project management expertise, specialising in marine projects. I am a proud Gladstone local and have previously worked at GPC on several occasions as Corporate Relations General Manager for seven years and most recently as Project Director for the Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project. My focus over the next 12 months will be the delivery of planned projects including Stage 1B of the East Shores Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct, the Clinton Vessel Interaction Project, and maximising the efficiencies in our shipping channels as the LNG trade continues to grow. We are continuing investigative work on the Clinton Vessel Interaction Project, which will explore options to improve the safe passage of vessels through the Clinton Channel in front of GPC s RG Tanna Coal Terminal wharf. A detailed business case, including a recommended option, will be finalised later this year and works on the preferred option are anticipated to commence in Another key focus for the organisation will be continuing our safety journey as we work towards our target of zero harm. Educating and engaging employees about safety is a continuous process at GPC and last month we launched a values based safety leadership program to challenge our thinking and behaviours around safety. GPC s investment in the communities in which it operates is exemplary and I am looking forward to continuing to focus on investing in and engaging with our local communities. I am very pleased to have joined the organisation in time for GPC s 2016 Botanic to Bridge event, which through the support of many sponsors, volunteers and participants, raised $20,000 for Roseberry Community Services and approximately $20,000 for local schools. On closing, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank Commercial General Manager, Mike Galt for his dedicated service to GPC in his capacity as Acting Chief Executive Officer over the last six months. I hope you enjoy this edition of Port Talk. Peter O Sullivan CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GPC achieves record trade again in 2015/16 GPC s total trade exceeded 116 million tonnes for the 2015/16 financial year, with trade anticipated to grow to around 130 million tonnes per year in the next five years. Significant contributors to this growth have been the expansion of GPC s existing RG Tanna Coal Terminal (RGTCT), the development of the new Wiggins Island Coal Terminal (WICT), and the development of three LNG plants in the Port of Gladstone, which have the potential to generate approximately 24 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year. CEO, Peter O Sullivan said GPC was in a strong positon at the end of the financial year, as the corporation continues to focus on improving its safety performance and developing new business opportunities across its three port precincts of Gladstone, Rockhampton and Bundaberg. GPC has achieved record throughput tonnages again for the 2015/16 financial year. Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is pleased to report the corporation has achieved record throughput tonnages again for the 2015/16 financial year. Key trade performance was again dominated by coal, with 72.1 million tonnes traded through the Port of Gladstone. GPC s financial performance was again strong in 2015/16, with solid returns from an expanding customer base, Mr O Sullivan said. GPC s 2015/16 Annual Report will be released in October. P2

Thousands pound the pavement for Botanic to Bridge 2016 Gladstone turned on a spectacular day for Gladstone Ports Corporation s (GPC) seventh annual Botanic to Bridge FunD Run on Sunday, 21 August. As the sun began to rise, so too did approximately 3,500 keen participants ready to take on the challenge of the 8km and 3km courses to raise money for local schools and this year s major beneficiary, Roseberry Community Services. Donning platinum sponsor, rt health fund s maroon coloured shirts, the 8km participants started their challenge by taking on Gladstone s very own Heartbreak Hill followed by a 5km dash down Glenlyon Road where they were joined by a maroon sea of eager 3km entrants. The remainder of the course is known for having a slow burn effect as participants run, jog, walk or push prams to the top of Goondoon Street and down the other side to bring it home over the Marina Bridge to the finish line. TOTAL ENTRANTS: 3,465 TOTAL FUNDS RAISED FOR THE rt FAMILIES FOUNDATION: $3,500 TOTAL FUNDS RAISED FOR ROSEBERRY COMMUNITY SERVICES: $20,000 TOTAL FUNDS RAISED FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS: APPROXIMATELY $20,000 The first runner to cross the finish line in the 8km event was JACK CURRAN. Jack completed the course in 25 minutes and 34 seconds. The first runner to cross the finish line in the 3km event was CHEVY BLACK. Chevy completed the course in 9 minutes and 52 seconds. This year, Botanic to Bridge donated $20,000 to Roseberry Community Services Branchout program to assist disadvantaged young people in Gladstone. The funding will be directed towards building a new kitchen to facilitate cooking programs and assist young people to gain valuable hospitality skills. A further $20,000 will also be injected back into our region s schools to go towards purchasing new educational resources and sporting equipment. GPC would also like to thank all the behind-the-scenes and on-course volunteers, sponsors and participants, as it is through your continued support that the event has been able to raise over $287,000 for the Gladstone community since P3

projectupdate GPC launches new value based safety leadership program Educating and engaging its employees in safety and its importance is an ongoing focus for Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC), and one that the corporation continues to demonstrate its commitment towards. Last month, an internal values based safety leadership program, Switch On, was launched to challenge employees thinking and behaviours around safety. One of the most important reasons to embrace safe practices at work is for our life outside of work and our families. This is in line with the values based safety proposition, and a key component in the make-up of the Switch On program. The program focuses on several mental models with each centred around choice the choice an individual makes when presented with a task and whether they undertake it in a safe or unsafe manner. The Switch On Safety Leadership Program will continue on an ongoing basis to ensure the entire organisation has the opportunity to experience the program. What is values based safety? Values based safety is about using our own personal values and beliefs to guide our behaviour and safely reach the desired outcome. Why is it important? Enhancing the safety culture at GPC is a key initiative for the organisation. The Switch On values based safety program is proven to upskill participants to ensure they are switching on before commencing work and in doing so, safety performance improves and the safety culture amongst the workforce is enhanced. What results can a values based safety program bring about? An even stronger safety culture where employees take more ownership for their own safety and the safety of others. GPC has recently launched an internal values based safety leadership program. GPC revitalises waterfront boardwalk at Gladstone Marina Visitors to Gladstone Ports Corporation s (GPC) Marina Parklands can now enjoy a smoother stroll with the corporation having recently redeveloped the waterfront boardwalk. The original timber boardwalk was removed and replaced with a modern, paved surface that is slightly wider than its predecessor. GPC Parks & Recreation Manager, Graham Gambie said the corporation is pleased with the new addition to the parklands. We re very happy with the end result. GPC has recently re-developed the waterfront boardwalk at its Gladstone Marina Parklands. The new boardwalk really modernises the waterfront area and further enhances the parklands. We ve also re-established the garden areas and laid around 800 square metres of new turf adjacent to the boardwalk, to ensure that the picnic areas were ready to be enjoyed by the community as soon as the re-development works were completed, Mr Gambie said. The redevelopment project was undertaken in various stages from February 2015 with the boardwalk closed in sections in order to minimise disturbance to parkland users and to enable marina users continued access to boat pens. GPC thanks the community for their patience and cooperation whilst the redevelopment works were being undertaken. For more information about GPC s parklands, visit Fire ants eradicated from Gladstone Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is pleased to report that fire ants have been declared eradicated from Gladstone as of 12 August No fire ants were found by Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) during the last round of surveillance in and around Yarwun in June As a consequence, BQ has revoked the Notice of Fire Ant Infestation and Restriction on Movement of Restricted Items at Fisherman s Landing issued on 30 June BQ and GPC wish to acknowledge the contribution made by all who participated in fire ant eradication activities and the vigilance by work groups in reporting when unusual ants were found across GPC sites. Please continue to report any suspected biosecurity issues like unusual plants or animals found by contacting BQ on P4

Vale Alan William Huth PSM 14th September th August 2016 Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) extends its sincere sympathy to Shirley, Ann, John and families and wishes to honour Alan Huth s substantial contribution to the Port during his 34 years of distinguished service from 3rd November 1965 to the 17th September Alan, a motor mechanic by trade, was loved and respected by his work colleagues as a genius who delighted in developing design concepts and practical solutions for a range of material handling issues confronting the efficient operation of GPC s exporting terminals. It was during the 1980s that Alan s skills came to the fore when (then) GPC General Manager, Reg Tanna, gave him the autonomy to seek solutions for a range of material handling issues confronting the new Clinton coal terminal. Alan responded with innovative design concepts for a belt tracking device and for transfer systems. He collaborated with the engineering department at CQ University and with Tasman/Warajay, a local engineering firm, to turn his design concepts into superior material handling products that received international acclaim. Today, Tasman/Warajay transfer systems, which transfer coal from one conveyor to another at 6,000-10,000 tonnes per hour with minimal impact and reduced energy consumption, are installed in every coal exporting terminal in Australia and in terminals in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa. The Tasman/Warajay belt tracker has an even wider appeal and is fitted on conveyors handling a range of bulk products throughout the world. The operational and cost efficiencies gained from these two devices is staggering, more than doubling the life of conveyor belts whilst significantly reducing breakdown maintenance. Alan also designed a modified blade for bulldozers, which rolls rather than pushes the coal, substantially increasing production rates and reducing fuel consumption. Alan s modified blades are fitted to GPC s fleet of 23 Caterpillar D11 dozers. His work was pivotal in the development of the single strand belt weigher, which enables precise coal blending - a hallmark marketing feature of the RG Tanna Coal Terminal. Due to these major successes and a range of additional design innovations, Alan Huth was awarded the 1993 Australia s National Bulk Materials Handling Award from the Australian Institute of Engineers. The Award is presented annually to a person who has made an outstanding contribution in research, design or development in the field of bulk materials handling. Alan was the first person without formal engineering qualifications to receive this prestigious award. Alan was also awarded the Public Service Medal in the 1996 Australia Day Honours List. This is a civil decoration awarded to Australian Public Servants. This medal was presented to Alan by the Governor of Queensland in May 1996 in recognition of his outstanding public service in research, design and development in the field of bulk materials handling. GPC proudly acknowledges Alan s significant contribution to the Port of Gladstone and to the efficient handling of bulk materials throughout the world. Local students discover Gladstone s Big6 Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) recently launched an education and awareness program that has been developed around the endangered and migratory species for the Gladstone region and greater bioregion, as listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act). Entitled Gladstone s Big6, the program is an initiative of GPC s Biodiversity Offset Strategy under the Western Basin project, which was completed in September 2013 and increased port access by deepening, widening and creating new shipping channels to allow LNG vessels to safely travel through the Port of Gladstone. Gladstone s Big6 celebrates the iconic species of the Gladstone bioregion - shorebirds, turtles, cetaceans, fish, dugongs, and crustaceans - and their habitats, and provides an opportunity to present GPC s environmental values and to demonstrate its sustainable stewardship of Gladstone Harbour. GPC Marine Scientist, Dr Megan Ellis said the program is a significant component of GPC s Biodiversity Offset Strategy aimed at generating community awareness. The purpose of the Biodiversity Offset Strategy is to assist in the long-term conservation of important animals and the environments around the harbour in which they live. It is important for everyone who uses the harbour and the beaches for work or recreation to know about the sea creatures and shorebirds of Gladstone, and the impact humans can have on them, Dr Ellis said. The Big6 program incorporates a school engagement component to engage directly with schools in the Gladstone region and provide educational resources for primary and secondary school teachers. Members of GPC s environmental team recently visited students at Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority s (GBRMPA) Future Leaders Eco Challenge at Quoin Island, Boyne Island State School, and Rainbow Valley Early Learning Centre to educate students about Gladstone s iconic marine species and how we can help protect them. For more information about Gladstone s Big6 and to join a Big6 tribe, visit Students from years 5 to 9 discovered Gladstone s Big6 at GBRMPA s Future Leaders Eco Challenge at Quoin Island in August. Year 3 students from Boyne Island State School enjoyed learning about Gladstone s Big6 as part of their study unit on the Great Barrier Reef. P5

HMAS Gladstone II officially opened at East Shores Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC), together with the Gladstone Maritime Museum recently celebrated the official opening of the HMAS Gladstone II at a ceremony at the East Shores Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct. The official opening ceremony was attended by local dignitaries and several of the business and individuals who assisted with the relocation and restoration of the ship. Commissioned on 8 September 1984, the Gladstone was used in Australia s fisheries protection, immigration, customs and drug law enforcement. On advice of its pending decommission from the RAN in 2005, a group of dedicated government and a number of generous local business representatives, as well as avid maritime historians, rallied together to secure the city of Gladstone as the final resting place of its namesake ship, HMAS Gladstone II. On 13 March 2007, after serving for almost 23 years and covering 618,000 nautical miles, the ship was decommissioned in her homeport of Cairns and gifted to the Gladstone Maritime Museum. On 20 March 2007, HMAS Gladstone sailed into Gladstone Harbour for its final time, where it was presented to Gladstone City Mayor, Peter Corones AM, who then handed the ship over to the Gladstone Maritime History Society. This ship was then moored in Auckland Inlet from 2007 and then to an anchor berth in the Gladstone Marina, and finally relocated in 2014 to its permanent position at GPC s East Shores Precinct where final restoration and maintenance works were undertaken. Gladstone Ports Corporation has invested $2.8 million during the relocation and restoration process, assisted by a funding grant of $115,000 awarded through the Queensland Government s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program. Locals and visitors to Gladstone s East Shores Precinct can now take part in scheduled tours of the ship, hosted by the Gladstone Maritime Museum. We are delighted with the end result and we re very excited to be able to share the ship and her wonderful story with Gladstone, said Gladstone Maritime History Society s President, Lindsay Wassell. The HMAS Gladstone II has been officially opened at the East Shores Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct. GPC is very pleased to have the HMAS Gladstone in its final home at the East Shores Precinct, which has been designed to reflect Gladstone s rich maritime history. The efforts of many have resulted in the successful and permanent placement of Gladstone City s namesake Royal Australian Navy patrol ship, HMAS Gladstone II, now at its final resting place at the East Shores Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct, said GPC Chairman, Leo Zussino. Almost $3 million has been invested in the project to secure, restore and relocate the ship, and this could not have been done without the passion and commitment of many of our regions generous individuals, businesses, industry, State and Federal Governments, Gladstone City Council and Gladstone Ports Corporation. This project has been a culmination of efforts by many over the past decade and in the near future, a commemorative plaque will be installed recognising the contributions of the individuals, businesses and industries involved in securing, relocating and restoring this significant piece of Gladstone s history. For information about tours of the HMAS Gladstone II, please contact the Gladstone Maritime Museum on Healthy focus on Gladstone Harbour Strong commercial fishing catches, increased tourism and extensive marine research programs are a positive indication of the health of Gladstone Harbour. Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) Chief Executive Officer, Peter O Sullivan said it is pleasing to note the amount of research being undertaken on Gladstone Harbour by industry, government and universities, as well as a trend for strong commercial fishing catches. GPC is committed to maintaining an environmentally sustainable harbour in conjunction with a world-class port. Over the past two decades, GPC has invested more than $125 million towards environmental monitoring, marine research and marine enhancement programs to help mitigate the impacts of port development and operations on the environs of Gladstone Harbour. The amount of initiatives being undertaken to ensure the health of the harbour is very positive and it is also pleasing to note that recent Fisheries Queensland data shows positive results in commercial seafood harvests from Gladstone Harbour, Mr O Sullivan said. The data indicates record levels of catch for some species including mud crabs and banana prawns. Strong commercial fishing catches, increased tourism and extensive marine research programs are a positive indication of the health of Gladstone Harbour. The Gladstone Harbour Report Card, released in 2015 by the GHHP, advised that the harbour met relevant State and Federal Government marine water quality guidelines with the marine environs assessed to be in satisfactory environmental health. Chairman of the GHHP, Paul Birch said it was very pleasing to see 26 organisations working together to maintain the health of our beautiful harbour. The report card clearly showed water quality to be good and habitats to be improving. We are very thankful for the great work of GPC and other partners to ensure we maintain the health of Gladstone Harbour, Mr Birch said. P6

In January 2016, Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) developed a strategy for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander employment and engagement, as part of its commitment under its Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan. The strategy focused on providing genuine employment opportunities for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander people, with a focus on acquiring relevant skills and qualifications and a pathway to full time employment. Critical to the success of the program was the appointment of an experienced Mentor and Liaison Officer, providing support to both trainees, supervisors and team mates to ensure the success of the placement. On 8 August, GPC welcomed six new trainees as part of our Indigenous Employment & Engagement Strategy. Five trainees will complete an Australian-first qualification in Cross Industry Operations, and one will complete a traineeship in Occupational Health & Safety over the next 18 months. GPC People & Community General Manager, Rowen Winsor said it was extremely satisfying to welcome our latest intake of trainees. We take our Reconciliation Action Plan initiatives very seriously so to see this program being implemented, and welcoming six new employees, is a wonderful achievement and I commend all involved in bringing this program to fruition, Ms Winsor said. We wish them all the best as they embark on their new careers with GPC. The trainees participated in a six week orientation program, balancing corporate requirements with cultural learnings, and commenced in their respective work areas on 19 September Go mobile with our new beach webcam app Want to know if it s crowded, or whether the sun s shining or if the surf s up these school holidays?
