2 A message from Craig As we move further into 2014 there are a number of significant milestones that are approaching for Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC). In September, the first coal train is due to arrive at the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET). GPC s new tug base development will also be completed by this time and will replace the existing tug berths located at Auckland Point to accommodate up to 12 tugs including the requirements of the LNG trade. Construction of the East Shores Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct is progressing well and the new waterfront parklands are on track to open around September. The fourth quarter of the year will also see the arrival of the first LNG vessel into Gladstone Harbour, as well as the first vessel to carry coal from WICET. Earlier this month, GPC acknowledged the release of the Independent Review of the bund wall at the Port of Gladstone. GPC has undertaken an initial review of the document and welcomes the findings and recommendations pertaining to GPC. It is important to note that the findings of the review relate to events in 2011 and GPC would like to assure the community that the issues affecting the bund wall have now been resolved and do not present an ongoing threat to the environment. GPC intends to, and will, incorporate the lessons learned from the review into its future practices, and is committed to working alongside the Federal and State governments to implement the recommendations. GPC recently launched its Centenary Donation Program to assist in facilitating community programs and initiatives throughout Central Queensland in celebration of the Port of Gladstone s 100th year of operations. GPC will continue its strong history of making a positive contribution to the communities in which it operates by providing five (5) centenary community donations of $10,000 each to not-for-profit, locally incorporated groups in the Gladstone, Bundaberg and Rockhampton regions. The donation program was designed to mark GPC s centenary and to recognise the contributions of our customers to the sustainable growth of our business and ongoing social investment. Over the coming weeks, GPC together with its customer representatives will assess received applications and determine the donation program beneficiaries. Customer representatives have been nominated by GPC based on the magnitude and longevity of their relationship with GPC, and representation across the organisational business portfolio. Craig Doyle CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Expressions of Interest open for the redevelopment of Burnett Heads riverfront and boat harbour Expressions of Interest have opened for the sale and development of the Burnett Heads Riverfront Mixed Use Residential Precinct, within the Port of Bundaberg. The development area, entitled Barubbra Shores, includes approximately 13 hectares of freehold waterfront land as well as around 1.6 hectares of wet lease. Planning documents call for a mixed-use precinct including improved waterway riverfront and marina access, new parklands, new retail, tourism and business facilities, and new residential opportunities. Port of Bundaberg Manager, Jason Pascoe said Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is excited to offer this unique development opportunity to the market. GPC hopes that the EOI process will attract a high quality developer who will deliver something special and in turn create new business and jobs for our region. Barubbra Shores represents one of the finest coastal development sites currently available in Australia. Gladstone Ports Corporation is the vendor of Barubbra Shores and has engaged highly respected marketing agency, Savills to market the opportunity to the world. Expressions of Interest close on Thursday, 12 June The disclosure documents and draft contract of sale are available at commercialsalesqld Through the porthole In the financial year 2012/13, 16,685,462 tonnes of coal were exported to Japan on 162 ships making Japan our largest importer of coal. Coal was not exported from Gladstone Harbour to Japan until The shipment of Kianga coal left Gladstone Harbour on the 7th November 1959 onboard the MV Wokingham. This shipment was the first to leave Gladstone and enter into international waters. These early shipments marked the beginning of a multi-billion dollar export trade, which fuelled the economic development of Central Queensland and forged strong commercial ties with Japan, which was to become Australia s largest trading partner. 3 GPC Walks the Talk for National Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for the community to celebrate, promote and share in Australia s rich culture and heritage. Celebrated across the country each year between 27th May and 3rd June, National Reconciliation Week commemorates two significant anniversaries in the reconciliation journey; the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. National Sorry Day is also recognised on the 26th May. To reflect the 2014 National Reconciliation Week theme, Let s Walk the Talk, Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) hosted four gatherings throughout the week and invited employees to participate. GPC Community Relations Officer - Indigenous Affairs, Lee-ann Dudley said National Reconciliation Week provides all Australians with an opportunity to recognise our past and look toward our shared future. The week is about being proud of our culture and heritage, reflecting on where we have come from and appreciating the contributions made by our ancestors that have enabled us to live the life that we do today. It is also about sharing and celebrating the history, heritage, art and culture of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and acknowledging our past. It s about treating each other with respect and as equals, Ms Dudley said. GPC supports ATSI and ASSI student excellence In 2013 Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) launched its Talent Today - Talent Tomorrow bursary program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) and Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) students. Through the program, bursaries are awarded to successfully selected students that are currently enrolled in and attending secondary schools in the Gladstone region. The aim of the bursary program is to help facilitate increased opportunities for local ATSI and ASSI students by recognising and rewarding academic excellence to encourage students to continue their education journey. Bursary recipients were nominated by their respective schools and consistently demonstrated a commitment to their schooling with regard to attitude, attendance, academic commitment and connection to culture. Fourteen bursaries were presented in the first round of the program and 15 bursaries were awarded in Round Two. GPC Acting Corporate and Community Relations Manager, Jade Walters presents Chanel College Year 9 students, David Jones and Lavina Turner with their bursaries. Applications for the next round of GPC s Talent Today - Talent Tomorrow bursary program will open later this year to align with other GPC student bursary programs. P3

4 Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program Gladstone Ports Corporation would like to congratulate Safety, Environment & Risk Officer, Tamika Palmer for being selected as one of six mentors to support the 2014 Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program. The program consists of a six-day residential stay providing participants with the chance to participate in leadership and professional development workshops, mentoring and networking opportunities and to practice parliamentary processes and applications. The program is open to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders aged from 18 to 25 years. Tamika had the opportunity to participate in the program in 2013 and is honoured to be returning this year as a program mentor. Tamika Palmer GPC s Reconciliation Action Plan As a commitment to its community and to embrace the opportunity to turn good intentions into actions, Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) has established a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in association with the local Indigenous community. The RAP aims to strengthen relationships, foster respect, increase opportunities and ensure accountability, within and throughout GPC s own Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) and Australian South Sea Islander (ASSI) programs and initiatives. GPC s RAP is well on track to achieving its objectives. The RAP outlines an Indigenous and Australian South Sea Islander employment target of 3.6%; as of March 2014 this was sitting at 3.0%. Opportunities are increased externally with the launch of the Talent Today - Talent Tomorrow bursary and scholarship programs for Indigenous and Australian South Sea Islander high school and tertiary students. GPC is acknowledging Connection to Country through the installation of new signage at identified areas within GPC Marina and Spinnaker Parklands. For a copy of GPC s RAP, visit P4

5 GPC corporate website gets new look GPC s new look corporate website Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) will soon launch a new corporate website. The new site will incorporate a fresh, modern design that will allow users to access information about GPC s operations, major projects, and community engagement opportunities and initiatives. GPC Digital Media Advisor, Zoe Jeffrey said the new site will better meet the needs of users. After initial adjustments to its new look and new ways of navigating through the site, users will find it a lot more user friendly, Ms Jeffrey said. The added site search engine will help during the adjustment period. The new site is also more responsive, therefore it will be easier to view and navigate via mobile and tablet devices. Users are encouraged to subscribe to GPC s new newsletter to receive monthly updates about port operations, projects and community initiatives. Sign-up is via GPC s homepage, Tannum Beach hits the web A webcam has been installed at Tannum Sands Beach and is live streamed through Gladstone Ports Corporation s website. The addition of this new webcam enables beachgoers to check the conditions of Agnes Water, Kellys and Tannum Sands beaches before hitting the water. Webcam footage can be viewed at under the Community section. Log on before hitting the beach. P5

6 Protected plants translocated from Ticor Quarry Fun had by all at GPC s family night Curtis the Turtle made a special appearance at GPC s Family Fun Night. With picnic blankets in hand and camping chairs under arm, families rolled into the Harbour Festival on Thursday, 17 April for Gladstone Ports Corporation s (GPC) Family Fun Night, all chasing the perfect spot to watch Peppa Pig, Scooby Doo and Fireman Sam. The young fans of these popular children s characters were visibly excited, dancing and cheering along with their favourite songs. With the kids entertained, parents were able to relax and enjoy the performances by the personalities that they too have come to know and love. GPC s Curtis the Turtle also made a special appearance on stage with his new friends and the night ended with a bang, thanks to a spectacular fireworks display. A 450 Komatsu excavator in operation. Gladstone Ports Corporation s (GPC) Environment and Earthworks teams recently joined forces to prepare and clear a new area at the Ticor Quarry. Preparation for the excavation works included the identification of habitat trees and protected plant species. GPC s Environment team assisted the Earthworks crew with tree clearing, which involved identifying and rattling habitat trees, prior to felling, to allow any animals to move on. No animals were identified during this process on this occasion. The Category A plant species, Marcrozamia miquelii, commonly known as Fern Cycads, were found in the area that was to be cleared. Cycads are native to the Ticor Quarry and while they are not classed as protected, they are Category A plants, which have the potential to become rare or endangered. To conserve the biodiversity of the site, the Cycad specimens were successfully translocated to a protected area outside the clearing zone in alignment with best practice under the Nature Conservation Act, Twelve Cycad specimens were translocated on this occasion. Once these works were complete, clearing of the remaining trees was undertaken. The newly cleared area will allow for many years of extraction from the quarry. GPC would like to congratulate Gladstone Festivals and Events on another successful Harbour Festival and are pleased to have been able to support this popular event again this year. Hook Up gets crowd hook, line and sinker Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) would like to congratulate the Boyne Tannum Hook Up on another successful year of fishing. Australia s largest family fishing competition, which celebrated its 19th year in 2014, had to navigate school and public holidays in the lead up to the event. However, that did not stop visitors from turning up on Friday 2nd May ready to compete. Nor did it stop the fish from biting. GPC was proud to sponsor this great community event again in Reminder to fishermen Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) has developed and is administering a Biodiversity Offset Strategy (BOS) to provide for the long-term conservation of threatened and migratory species, including their habitats in the Western Basin area. A total of 34 TAngler bins were installed earlier this year, including 31 in the Gladstone region, two in Rockhampton and one at The community is encouraged to utilise the TAngler bins to dispose of all fishing-related materials, and to utilise the appropriate general rubbish and recycling bins to dispose of other waste. 7 HMAS Gladstone HMAS Gladstone, affectionately known as Sadrock, was commissioned in September 1984 and based at Cairns for the duration of her entire working life. Serving for almost 23 years and covering 618,000 nautical miles, HMAS Gladstone contributed to fisheries protection, immigration, customs and drug law enforcement operations. HMAS Gladstone was one of 15 Freemantle Class Patrol Boats. This class worked alongside government agencies, supported special forces and provided a useful transport capability, particularly in disaster relief and humanitarian assistance operations. In the event of war these vessels would have been tasked to control the waters close to the Australian mainland. HMAS Gladstone was the second Royal Australian navy ship of this name, with HMAS Gladstone (I) being a Bathurst class corvette. HMAS Gladstone, although it did not serve in battle, inherited the Battle honours of HMAS Gladstone (I), which included Pacific and New Guinea The vessel was decommissioned on March 13, Class Fremantle Class Type Patrol Boat (PB) Pennant P216 Nickname Sadrock Builder North Queensland Engineers and Agents, Cairns, Queensland Commissioned 8 September 1984 Decommissioned 13 March 2007 Dimensions & Displacement Displacement 220 tonnes Length 42 meters Beam 7.15 meters Draught 1.8 meters Performance Speed 30 knots Range 2,360 nautical miles at 12 knots Complement Crew 24 Propulsion Machinery Two MTU 538 series 16-cylinder main propulsion engines One Dorman 12-cylinder auxiliary propulsion engine Horsepower 6,140 Armament Guns 40/60 Bofors general purpose gun Machine Guns Awards Inherited Battle PACIFIC Honours NEW GUINEA Freemantle Class Patrol Boats Fast Fact: HMAS Gladstone (I) Several of the patrol boats were made famous starring as fictional ships in television series; HMAS Hammersley appeared in Channel 9 s Sea Patrol and HMAS Defiance featured in ABC s Patrol Boat. HMAS Gladstone to moor one last time at East Shores After sailing over 618,000 nautical miles serving the country for over 20 years, HMAS Gladstone will moor for the final time at the East Shores Gladstone Coal Exporters Maritime Precinct. In March 2007, HMAS Gladstone was decommissioned in her homeport of Cairns. It was during this ceremony that it was announced that the HMAS Gladstone would be gifted to Gladstone s Maritime Museum. The ship then commenced her next voyage, which lead her to where she is based to this day, adjacent to Spinnaker Park in Gladstone Harbour. HMAS Gladstone is currently moored in Auckland Inlet, awaiting her new home within the East Shores recreational precinct. Engineering works will be undertaken at the East Shores project site to prepare the wet dock, in which the HMAS Gladstone will be secured and maintenance works will be undertaken on the ship in preparation for its relocation. 8 Celebrate 100 years with GPC In 2014 Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) celebrates 100 years of operations and we invite the community to help us commemorate this important milestone in October. We won t give away all the details just yet, but we are looking forward to sharing this milestone with the Gladstone community. Please look out for more information about GPC s centenary celebration over the coming months. Supporting the recovery of the Salvation Army Bundaberg Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) recently donated $10,000 to the Red Shield Appeal to assist with the rebuilding of the Salvation Army s premises in Bundaberg after it was inundated with flood water early last year. After the devastating floods, the Salvation Army helped countless Bundaberg residents whose homes were not covered by insurance to repair and renovate their properties, but unfortunately did not have the time or funds to fully repair their own premises. The donation was made at the Salvation Army Bundaberg s annual launch event, which raised over $40,000 for the Red Shield Appeal. GPC values the contributions of the Salvation Army to the Bundaberg community and is pleased to support the continuation of their good work. Port of Bundaberg Manager, Jason Pascoe with Her Excellency, The Governor of Queensland, Penelope Wensley AC and Captain Chris Millard from the Salvation Army Bundaberg. P8
