2 Australian fellowship for coral reef managers: building capacity for sustainable development in small island developing states. Building leaders for sustainable development in coral reef nations Coral reefs are the foundation of economic sustainability and social wellbeing in countries throughout the Caribbean and Pacific. Effective management of these vital ecosystems is fundamental to sustainable development and ecosystem-based adaptation. The Australian Fellowship Program for Coral Reef Management is a unique opportunity for selected individuals to share experiences and learn from Australian s leading experts. Based in Townsville, the global center for coral reef research and management, the fellowship program includes visits to the Great Barrier Reef, leading research facilities, world-class tourism and fishing operations, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Over three weeks, participants will hear the latest research, learn about best practice management and develop new leadership skills. Key topics include responding to climate change, science for management, integrated coastal zone management, incident response, environmental impact assessment, marine reserves, compliance, ecosystem services, community stewardship and communication. Fellows will develop as professionals and as individuals, returning home with new knowledge, improved skills, new colleagues and greater confidence to support sustainable development through better coral reef management.

5 Program Facilitators DR ADAM SMITH is a Director of Reef Ecologic based in Townsville. He is a scientist, manager and leader with a life long passion and commitment to the marine environment and future generations. Adam has almost 30 years experience in research and management, including 15 years with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Adam studied a BSc (Hons), PhD and MBA and has authored 41 scientific papers and books. Adam is a keen diver and has travelled the Pacific, Caribbean & Indian Oceans. DR PAUL MARSHALL is Adjunct Associate Professor with the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science at the University of Queensland and Director of Reef Ecologic. He worked with Australia s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority for 14 years, where he led the Climate Change Program and the Australia-Caribbean Coral Reef Collaboration. He has over 20 years experience in the research and management of tropical marine systems, published extensively and logged thousands of dives on coral reefs around the world. ZOE ROUTH is founder and Director of Inner Compass Leadership Development, established in Zoe is passionate about team facilitation and leadership development and works with clients across both the public and private sector, focusing on developing leadership capacity, skill, and ability at all levels in organisations. Zoe has extensive experience designing, facilitating, and overseeing senior leadership programs and thirty years as an outdoor experiential educator.
