The energy requirements of India stand as the third largest and it is the fastest growing energy market place of the world. While the full hydrocarbon potential of India remains unfathomed, it offers opportunities to strategic investors both global and domestic to engage in conventional/unconventional energy sources, in its onshore and offshore hydrocarbon basins. To bring together, the hydrocarbon industry, its leaders and policy makes, PETROTECH , the 13th International Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition is being organised jointly by ONGC & FIPI during February 2019 at the India Expo Mart, Greater Noida, NCR, New Delhi, India under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. PETROTECH-2019, embraces the theme Shaping the New Energy World through Innovation and Collaboration, to take deep insights on augmenting energy requirements of the new energy world. While deliberations, sharing of experiences and new alliances would emerge in the Conference, the Exhibition at PETROTECH-2019 offers a platform to industry players in technology, products and services to present their strengths. PETROTECH Conference and Exhibition, a biennial event has now attained status of the flagship hydrocarbon show in this part of the world. Like its previous editions, I am sure this edition too shall draw renewed interest for participation from all stakeholders of the hydrocarbon value chain. PETROTECH-2019 assumes significance in the present times of the hydrocarbon industry and proposes to be the ideal place to read the transforming contours of the new energy world. 4 OVERVIEW India is one of the fastest growing major economies in the world and the third largest consumer of petroleum products, after US and China. According to the International Energy Agency s (IEA) World Energy Outlook, India s economy is expected to grow more than five times its current size by 2040, leading to a massive increase in energy demand. India s current share of global energy consumption, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2017 is 5.5%, compared to 30% to that of China. Although there is an increased focus on renewables, demand for oil and gas has always been on the rise, and is expected to grow to 618 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) by 2040 from Mtoe in 2016, an increase of more than 140%. Moreover, India s share in global primary energy consumption is projected to increase more than twofolds by India s total oil imports bill rose 22.5 percent on year-on year to US$ 109 billion in India s oil consumption grew 5.3 percent year-on-year to 205 million tonnes in , as against the global growth of 1.5 percent, thereby making it the thirdlargest oil consuming nation in the world. India is the fourth largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) importer after Japan, South Korea and China, and accounts for 7.1 percent of the total global trade. MARKET SIZE INDIA As per IMF Database & IEA outlook, Compounded average annual growth rate for India was 7.2% for the period For the period , this is expected to be around 7.7%. These numbers are far ahead of the world s average number 3.7% for Population growth and rate of urbanisation is an important contributor to that huge growth rate. Urbanisation from present 33% to 45% by 2040 will accelerate the switch to modern fuels, the rise in appliance and vehicle use, and demand for construction materials, including energy intensive products such as steel and cement. The present domestic production of crude oil is only about 20% of petroleum product consumption, thus leaving a huge dependency on oil imports. Therefore, considering projection of robust petroleum product consumption growth and to reduce the dependency on oil imports, India offers a huge opportunity in Upstream, Midstream and Downstream hydrocarbon sector.

This oil major would then compete globally and utilize the synergy between various state entities for achieving efficiency and cost competitiveness in order to create more value for all shareholders. Recently, ONGC s has acquired Govt stake in HPCL to enhance its presence in the full energy value chain at par with global peers. The Government of India also plans to build a nine million tonne (MT) refinery in Rajasthan and a 60 MT refinery in Maharashtra, auction oil and gas fields, increase use of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Government of India has taken many a policy reforms and interventions to make India as a leading E&P investment destination. Policy for E&P Data Assimilation, Disclosure, Sharing, Accessibility & Dissemination through National Data Repository (NDR); Discovered Small Field Policy (DSF), Open Acerage Licence Policy (OALP) under Hydrocarbon Exploration & Licencing Policy (HELP) replacing the previous NELP, New policies pertaining to CBM contracts, Policy framework for development of Underground Coal Gasification in Coal & Lignite bearing areas, Marketing and Pricing freedom for gas production from Deepwater, UltraDeepwater and High Pressure High Temperature areas and New domestic Natural Gas Pricing Guidelines are few of the initiatives in this direction. The Government of India is planning to introduce a new policy to encourage the use of biofuels in transport fuel. For this policy, the Government of India is looking at an investment of Rs 1 lakh crore (US$ billion) in the entire value chain. Gas production will likely touch 90 Billion Cubic Metres (BCM) by 2040, subject to adjustment to the current formula that determines the price paid to domestic producers, while demand for natural gas will grow at a CAGR of 4.6 per cent to touch 149 Mtoe. The exhibition is slated for formal unveiling by the Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt of India, on 10th February 2019 and will attract wide media attention as a curtain raiser for three day long PETROTECH 2019 event.
