1 DECEMBER 2011 THE TINGALPA TRANSMITTER Tingalpa Model Aero Club Inc Heliday 2012 David Walker and Randall Mowlam - Event Co-ordinator s Well it was another magnificent day in the great Queensland south east. With 39 registered pilots from all over the region, nearly 80 helicopters, loads of good food on hand for all to enjoy, good friends, great weather & the promise of some fun flying all was set for another successful event. The day started with the electrics hitting the skies around 6.30am, while preparations were being made for our big breakfast. Many thanks must go to Dave H, Will, Jared & Josh plus any & all those who helped for helping me out with the BBQ this year. Help at these events is always appreciated. A special thanks to Anita for her help in the canteen and the sale of raffle tickets. With breakfast finished, pilots still being registered and everyone ready for a big day, all that remained was the mandatory pilot s briefing. Randall conducted the briefing, welcoming all our guests, friends then outlining the new procedures we are now introducing at the club. With a good part of the day being spent chatting to old friends & some new, from behind the barbeque & the new canteen servery, I didn t get to see much of the flying. Hence, my handing over to Randall to give a quick rundown of the events that followed. At this point I would like to thank Randall for all his help in making this event so successful. To all our sponsors who set up stalls, and those who contribute in other ways, thank you. To all our pilots and visitors without you re continued support we would not have these events. Thank you, and see you all again next year. Thank you David, well as David mentioned it was another great turn out to the annual Heliday at TMAC, the weather turned on a great day with no rain in sight. Many familiar faces & some new ones enjoyed a great day out. As with keeping with the traditional TMAC Heliday fun fly the theme for the day was always about good food, plenty of space to fly & catching up with all of the RC Helicopter community. Wayne Brooks from Brooknet was on site with the latest Outrage 50 FBL model & the latest Phoenix Simulator 3 for all to enjoy. Rick from Revolution RC had a stall on site to show case his latest gear, Greg Gilles from R/C Fuel supplies had a few of the ELQ Helicopters for all to try out. Continued Page 8

3 s Report: Will Sipma Page 3 As 2011 draws to a close the TMAC has seen quite a significant number of improvements to its facilities. The report at AGM in September covered all of the major issues for the year; the only new items will be replacement of chain wire fence on front boundary and a new section of post and rail fencing at the western end. This will be funded by a grant from the Lord Mayor s Suburban Initiative Fund. We have received approval in principal from BCC for the erection of a new universal toilet facility. We now require someone to take up the challenge of following through to the next stage. Any interested members please do not hesitate to contact a member of the committee. Thanks to all of those members who gave of their time in assisting with the numerous numbers of jobs around the Club over the last twelve months, without your contribution our facilities would not be at the excellent standard that it currently is. Remember that your club can only exist if its members are prepared to stand up and be counted when the work has to be done. Be it on the committee, working bees, helping new members learn to fly, or just taking the time to encourage new or prospective members. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a safe and happy Christmas and New Year, and we look forward to another year of modelling in Will Sipma PRESIDENT TMAC Merchandise We have had some enquiries from members in regards to purchasing TMAC merchandise. If you would like to purchase from the TMAC range, please contact Gregor Kruberg, who is minding the goodies until we get the club house set up properly, to arrange a hand over. Alternatively, any committee member will be able to arrange this for you. Prices for the merchandise are; Polo Shirts $35 Caps $15 Gold badges TBC

4 Page 4 THE TINGALPA TRANSMITTER Secretary s Report: Phil Gartshore Following the AGM in September, TMAC has had a change of Secretary. A big thank you to Kevin Dodd for his stint in the position. The club benefits for Kevin's experience in every aspect of his involvement with TMAC. Please find Kevin's report presented at the AGM below. MAAQ Rules The MAAQ is working through the difficult task of reviewing and revising its rules, and has asked for feedback from member clubs. The Committee has reviewed the proposed rule changes, and after the recommendations were approved by the membership at the October General Meeting, a letter was sent to MAAQ. Items brought to the attention of MAAQ include: 1. Operation MAAQ without By-Laws; 2. Changing the term of some MAAQ Committee members from one to two years; 3. Expenditure limits without prior approval at a general meeting. Vandals in the Porter Field Car Park In early December, the committee has had a report of a club member's vehicle being vandalised by having solvent sprayed onto the paintwork, resulting in damage of over $4,000. On the positive side, the clubs video surveillance system is up and running, so the committee will be reviewing footage of the area of the car park concerned. Members are asked to report any unusual behaviour at Porter field to the committee. MAAA 2011 Special SFI Conference Minutes TMAC has received the minutes of the conference held in October The following summarises the carried motions of the conference, which will be taken to the MAAA national conference: 1. MAAA Instructor Curriculum. MAAA introduce a common Instructor s Course curriculum. 2. Theory Exams. The Instructor Course to include a written open book exam to be successfully completed prior to awarding the Instructor Rating 3. Standardised MAAA Instructor Training. The MAAA adopt the Instructor s course structure as supplied by MAS NSW as a draft for a trial period of 2 years. Input from all states to be considered for incorporation.

5 4. Re-accreditation procedure for Instructor qualification. current Instructors be offered ongoing opportunities of refresher courses 5. Lapsed Time Limits for Flight proficiency. All flight proficiency qualifications lapse after 3 years absence. 6. Flight Test required on Instructor s Course. A Flight Test is required on Instructor s Course 7. Introduction of Electric Bronze and Gold Wings. The Flight Training Subcommittee recommends that for the flight proficiency scheme, tests can only be carried out using model aircraft that do not qualify for the MAAA Park Flyer Scheme. 8. Helicopter Gold Wings. The Inverted Triangle, Forward Flip and Inverted Hover be removed from the MAAA Gold Wings test. If you would like a copy of the Minutes of the proceedings of the 2011 Special SFI Conference, please contact the Secretary. Events Calendar 2012 The Committee has finalised the Calendar for 2012, which is published in this edition of the Transmitter, and will be on the web site in January. As per guidance from TMAC members, we have restricted events to one per month. New and interesting events this year include: 1. QMARA Electric Pylon Day. This promises to be an exciting event. Thanks to Joe Luxford for coordinating. 2. Have a Go Day. This is to allow members of the public to experience RC flight with a MAAA instructor. Thanks to Randall Mowlem for coordinating. Season's Greetings. Complements of the season to all members; please enjoy your flying safely. Remember that Porter Field is closed on Sunday 25th December. If you have any issues, please use the contact details on the web site. Phil Gartshore.

8 Page 8 THE TINGALPA TRANSMITTER Josh from Concept Hobbies was on hand to demo the latest in electric scale models, complete with carry cases. Lyle Mahon from RC Heliworld had the latest in Mavrick blades, plus his fleet of MA choppers on site. There were many pilots with both electric & nitro powered choppers, some even brought along their favourite scale chopper for all to enjoy & photograph. Many thanks to all the sponsors; Brooknet, Taiwa (WattsUp RC), Revolution RC & RC Heli World for all your support & prize donations for Heliday On a personal note I would like thank David Walker for all the event catering & field prep plus BBQ cooking, the day was a total success due to his efforts helping everyone throughout the day. A big thank you to everyone who helped on the day, Dave Hayward, Jarred St Clare, Josh Stedman and Will Sipma. Lastly but certainly not the least a big thank you to all the members and guest pilots who attended the day. The winner of the T-Rex 450 Super sport Kit was a new pilot & the winner of the Phoenix Flight Sim was Henry. Have a safe & merry Christmas, see Heliday 2012.

9 Dam Reconstruction and Western Approach Allen Danvers Over past few months we have been able to take the opportunity afforded by the dry weather to clean up the dam its surrounding area and extend cleared area West of the main strip. Some work still remains to alter fencing and work with the equipment we have to slash and eventually mow these areas. Mother nature also needs to provide a some rain. By this time next year it should be green and close to the condition of the rest of the outfield. The Dam is now much more defined and much longer. The Western approach is improved already and when fencing changes are completed extended run off and low approaches will be greatly improved. Some pictures show before and after shots and also Phil Collings beginning his first flights on the dam. He made it look easy, even touch and goes! Over the next period we hope to gather ideas from members regarding further improvement for the dam area and operating guidelines for it. The windmill is now back in operation and should maintain water levels, we just need a some serious rain to fill it up. Once again Will Sipma has been instrumental in getting this work done. The committee have kept members updated and sought guidance from them about our investment of $ s in this work and now it is there for all to see and use. Well done Will, helpers and the Management Committee for getting this done.

10 THE TINGALPA TRANSMITTER Page 10 Classic Fighters Omaka 2011 Phil Gartshore I had the pleasure of attending the Omaka Classic Fighters Air Show just outside Blenheim, in the Malborough region of New Zealand at Easter this year. The Omaka air show is held bi-annually, with the Wanaka Air Show held during alternating years. As if an air show featuring WWI and WWII fighters wouldn t be enough, adjacent to the Omaka field is the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. The show runs on Easter Saturday and Sunday, and attracts around 10,000 people each day. It boasts a continuous show from 10am until 3:30pm. New Zealand rules for air shows are not as Australia s, and they fly really close in to the crowd, making the spectacle wonderful watching. WWI Aircraft In all, an amazing SEVEN Fokker Triplanes flew in the Jasta 11 formation. Omaka has been privileged to host the largest number of Fokker Triplanes to fly together anywhere since early 1918 when these machines ruled the skies over the western front. They did not have it all their own way however and allied aircraft performing at Omaka this year included the Gnome rotary powered Sopwith Camel, the amazingly agile Sopwith Triplane, the Bristol F2B Fighter and the de Havilland D.H.5 with a Nieuport 11, its 80 hp le Rhone rotary spinning vigorously, helping keep the Germans at bay. Seven Fokker Dr.1's in formation at Omaka

11 WWII Aircraft There was also a number of great restored WWII aircraft on display and flying at Omaka. The WWII page shows the beautifully restored aircraft on the ground. If you look really hard at the Catalina photo, you might just see Allen Danvers preparing for his flight. By a complete coincidence, we were both at the airshow, and managed not to run in to each other. A sort of TMAC on tour, if you will. Video of the event If you would like to see some footage of these fantastic aircraft, showing these fabulous aircraft in action, go to Youtube.com and search for Omaka. Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre If you are interested in WWI aviation history, I recommend the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, which is adjacent to the air show site. This is just a fantastic centre and well worth the visit, but do allow at least half a day. As mentioned above, Peter Jackson is the patron, and is an avid collector of WWI memorabilia. The Centre displays contain a large number of artefacts belonging to Peter. We were lucky enough to e given a personal tour by Graham Orphan, who manages the centre with his wife. Graham s anecdotes about the collection and Peter Jackson s contribution really brought the displays to life.

12 THE TINGALPA TRANSMITTER Page 12 Note: Unusual models do not need to be electric.

13 Windmill Repaired Allen Danvers On Saturday 3rd December a few dedicated members repaired the windmill and it is now back in service. Will Sipma, Dave Stewart, Dave Walker and Noel Wilson put in a lot of effort and time and once again we say a big THANK YOU. Thank goodness members can still donate time and effort to the club so jobs like this become affordable and rewarding to those that contribute. When the blisters are gone and sore backs are forgotten the windmill will still be working away sending water to the dam. It will also be making those that did the repairs feel proud that they were able to contribute and hopefully encourage others to step forward when they have a chance. More jobs are the list and members may be able to help with them so see any committee members about helping is any way.

14 THE TINGALPA TRANSMITTER Page 14 Warbirds November 2011 Randall Mowlam The last event of 2011 was a huge success with both attendance & a fine day after recent wet weather across the south east Qld coast. Congratulations must go to the event director Gregor Kruberg & all the members who helped Joel Davison with the canteen for such a successful day & also for the field preparation by Dave Walker. The Southern Cross Air Force was well represented with the sky full of aircraft from both WWII & beyond. Congratulations to Adrian Hellwig who took out this year s Dave Summer s Trophy. A Big thank you to Chad from Xtreme Hobbies and Chris & Aaron from Budget Hobbies for their continued support of the day with Pilot Draw & Raffle prizes donated for the day. The raffle was a big success, with all 100 tickets being snapped up. The prize winners in the raffle were Bruce Duncan, Randall Mowlam and Steve Beecham. To all members & guests who attended the day, thank you for attending this event, we look forward to seeing you again at the next event.
