2 Environment & Planning Law Association (NSW) Inc. The 2016 EPLA Conference will be held in the Blue Mountains on October 2016 at the magnificently restored Hydro Majestic Hotel, Medlow Bath. As our members and past attendees know, the annual EPLA conference covers a broad range of topics chosen to inform and catch the interest of the diverse range of professionals working in planning, local government and environmental law and practice. In 2016 we will also present special sessions on bushfires and rebuilding after bushfire, coastal protection, sustainability, local government and planning and recent cases updates. The conference keynote speakers are Victor Steffensen, an indigenous fire management consultant and environmental film maker who will share his traditional knowledge of land and fire management, and Professor Richard Kingsford from UNSW, an environmental scientist, passionate for birds and water, and renowned for his aerial surveys. All our speakers are leaders in their profession and they will update and educate you about new planning amendments and proposals, the latest Court cases and important recurring issues. EPLA is again grateful for the participation of members of the NSW Court of Appeal and the Land and Environment Court. We are also looking forward to addresses by the State and local government representatives. EPLA is a multi-disciplinary organisation with members from the fields of planning, environment, architecture, local government and the legal profession. We have members throughout the State, in government and private enterprise and non-profit groups. This year you will find conference topics that are relevant to all, whether city or country, court or community, civil or criminal. The conference dinner will be held at the Hydro Majestic on Friday, 21st after the main day of conference sessions. Our invited after dinner speaker is Bob Debus AM, a distinguished retired politician for the Blue Mountains area and well known environmental activist, famous for replying to the question whether there was any chance of stopping coal seam gas mining? with only if the people take to the streets!. After finishing the conference at lunchtime Saturday, 22nd, delegates should take the opportunity to explore the many interesting local towns, sites and bushwalking opportunities in this unique World Heritage destination. EPLA has negotiated a special deal for accommodation at the Hydro and Lilianfels for delegates. You will need to book your accommodation when you register for the conference through EPLA. Over 22 years, he's travelled thousands of kilometres, flying just above the water, counting birds.
