2 1.0 Background of IRGCE 2016 The 8 th edition of International Rubber Glove Conference & Exhibition (IRGCE) 2016 was held from 6 to 8 September 2016 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. The bi-annual event was organized by Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) and co-hosted by Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council (MREPC). The theme for IRGCE 2016 was Beyond Just Infection and Contamination Control. This year, the Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur officiated the opening of the 2016 International Rubber Glove Conference & Exhibition (IRGCE) on 6 September 2016 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The MPREC team was allocated a VIP table for the Conference Dinner on 6 September. The sit down dinner was attended by the Deputy Minister and included a variety of entertainment for the night. The exhibition details are as below: Show Date : September 2016 (Exhibition 06 & 07 Sept. 2016) Venue : Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia Exhibition space : 7,465sqm gross Details No. of visitors 6,000 (estimated) *an increase of 50% 95 exhibitors / No. of exhibitors countries *an increase of 8.65% No. of Booths *an increase of 18.3% Table 1.1 Comparison to IRGCE previous edition From table 1.1, we see there was an increase in the total number of visitors by 50%, from 4,000 to 6,000 and slight increase of total number of booths by 18.3%, 230 to 272 as compared to previous edition of IRGCE in However, total number of exhibitors have decreased by slightly (9%), from 104 to 95 booths in This could be due to the fact that many of the exhibitors had impressive booths and pavilions rather than just standard booths. 1.2 Main partners Main partners of the event are: Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI)

Among the most showcased product during the show include a variety of surgical, examination, cleanroom, dental, industrial, household, chemotherapy, gynaecology, radiation and high-risk gloves. Other medical devices such as condoms, catheters and dental dams were also exhibited. Raw materials, chemicals, glove formers, machinery, testing services and packaging were also promoted. Aside from the trade show, the event also concurrently held conferences and career talk for students to be able to meet with the people within the industry. 1.4 The overall event schedule

The MREPC promotional booth was strategically located in East Wing, Hall 2, booth E6. The location for MREPC booth was strategic as the booth is near to entrance and share the hall with some of the world s biggest glove manufacturers which managed to draw large crowds of visitors. The most enquired products was examination glove (40%), followed by Nitrile examination glove (20%), surgical glove (20%) and industrial glove (20%). MREPC received enquiries from China, India, Malaysia, Philippines, the Middle East and various European countries. While enquiries from UAE and the Philippines were at 6% and USA, Pakistan, Vietnam and Turkey at 4% respectively. 4.0 Inward Buying Mission and Business Matching In conjunction with 8 th IRGCE, MREPC organized an Inward Buying Mission (IBM) on rubber medical gloves from India and South Korea during the exhibition from 6 th to 7 th September A total of 6 potential buyers from India and 1 from South Korea had participated in the 2-day event. 58 out of 64 arranged business matching sessions were successfully conducted. The concurrent meeting sessions were mainly held at MREPC booths whereas several meetings were held at the manufacturers booths that were also exhibiting at the IRGCE. Natural rubber examination gloves were the most sought-after product by the Indian buyers whereas the South Korean buyer was only looking for powder free, natural rubber surgical gloves. Some of the buyers were also looking for dental, radiation, high risk, food grade, household and industrial gloves, made of both natural rubber and nitrile. Most of the buyers have not imported directly from Malaysia before but some had been sourcing from the local importers in their countries.

9 Majority of the potential buyers shared that they were pleased with the overall arrangements as well as information gathered during the meetings and visit of IRGCE, particularly Mr James Ko from Saluce Korea who managed to obtain better product knowledge and clearer picture of importing whereas Mr Narayan Davey from Universal Surgical indicated he will return to Malaysia very soon for further meetings with the manufacturers. Generally, the IBM and business matching sessions were held successfully and turned out to be fruitful event for both buyers and manufacturers. It is recommended that MREPC to organize similar events in future to further assist Malaysian exporters to explore more business opportunities. 5.0 Career Talk - MREPC SEMINAR ON CAREER OPPORTUNITES IN THE RUBBER PRODUCT INDUSTRY Date: 6 7 September 2016 Venue: Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC), Room , Level 3 In conjunction with the 8 th International Rubber Glove Conference and Exhibition (IRGCE) which was held on 6-8 September 2016 at KLCC, MREPC organized a series of career talks on job opportunities in the rubber product industry for university students. The main objective of the career talks was to provide exposure to university and college students on Malaysian s rubber product industry and to encourage them to join the industry. It also provides an opportunity for them to meet their potential employers. The students were also able to see the latest products and services provided by the rubber glove industry. On the first day, 6 September 2016, 95 students from 14 universities attended the career talk; which consists of 5 public universities and 9 private universities as follows: Public university 1 University of Technology, Malaysia (UTM) 2 University of Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) 3 MARA University of Technology (UiTM) 4 The National University of Malaysia (UKM) 5 Putra University, Malaysia (UPM) Private university/ university college/ Institute 1 INTI International University 2 PETRONAS University of Technology (UTP) 3 SEGI University 4 Tenaga Nasional University (UniTEN) 5 Taylor s University 6 Monash University

10 7 University of Selangor (Unisel) 8 The University of Nottingham Malaysia (Nottingham) 9 University of Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute Of Chemical & Bio-Engineering Technology (UniKL MICET) On the second day, 7 September 2016, 141 students from 6 universities/vocational institutes attended the career talks, which consists of 4 public universities and 2 private institutions as follows: Public university 1 University of Malaya (UM) 2 University of Science, Malaysia (USM) 3 MARA University of Technology (UiTM) 4 University of Malaysia, Perlis (UniMAP) Private university/ university college/ Institute 1 Monash University 2 VTAR Institute Students had the privilege to listen to the one of the iconic figure of the rubber industry, Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai (Executive Chairman of Top Glove Corporation Bhd) on the first day. This was followed by Mr. Lim Kwee Shyan (immediate past president of MARGMA and CEO of Careplus (M) Sdn. Bhd) and Dato Ong Eng Long (President of MRPMA). The speakers for the second day were Mr. Goh Miah Kiat (CEO of Karex Bhd), Dato Dr.Ong Eng Long, Mr. Denis Low (President of MARGMA), and Dr. S. Supramaniam (Vice President of MARGMA). Overall, the students had fun and interactive sessions with the speakers. The students were enthusiastic in asking questions pertaining to the speakers experience, mentors, opportunities and salary range in the industry, the secrets of success and many more interesting questions. Apart from the speakers mentioned above, MREPC s very own scholars, Ms Jocelyn Ch ng and Ms Thulasimani Chellon were also invited to share their experience with the students. Ms Jocelyn is a research engineer and currently working with Maxter Glove Manufacturing Sdn Bhd while Ms Thulasimani is currently attached with Kossan Industries Sdn. Bhd. as a polymer engineer.

Overall, MREPC s participation in the 8 th edition of IRGCE Kuala Lumpur was a success with the large number of visitors received, business matchings organised and students who participated in the career talks. The 9 th IRGCE is expected to be held on a bigger scale in 2018 and will be held in conjunction with the IRC (International Rubber Conference) on September 4 6, 2018 at KLCC.
