1 PORT MACQUARIE/HASTINGS NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2018 Website: President: Joan Lundstrom Committee Members: Vice President: Nicola Herbert John Banks Treasurer: Erica De Carlo Sandra Banks Secretary: Lynda Walters Lee Brown Public Officer: Erica De Carlo Ian Richardson Judith Clegg NEXT MEETING: 13 th NOVEMBER 2018 Our guest speaker this month will be Senior Constable Steve Cherry: Crime Preventionlatest on Scams, Frauds & the need for greater vigilance. The Getting to Know You "guest will be David Parker. NATIONAL COUNCIL On the 16 th of October 2018 John Urquhart received a memo from Chris Guille inviting him to rejoin the NSA National Council in Brisbane. We are pleased to report John has accepted this position and will continue to be our representative at Head Office in The first meeting will take place late November. Congratulations John from Port Macquarie Branch. HANNAM VALE OPEN GARDENS On Sunday 21 st October members made their way down the highway towards the small country village of Hannam Vale just north of Taree, to view six open gardens. The weather was overcast and showery following a night of heavy rain, which refreshed all the gardens which were open from 10am to 4pm. Each garden was different and obviously the climate in that area was most suitable for growing plants and vegetables. The School Garden was a great project for the children and we saw lush rhubarb growing amongst spinach and herbs. The organic garden had lots of fruit trees on the front lawn, whilst inside there were huge red cabbages the size of footballs, strawberries and asparagus spears reaching for the sky. Amongst the herbs, lettuce, peas and broad beans were planted sweet peas for colour and scent. The garden of Weedin was well organised with neatly mulched borders with plants and of course garden gnomes. Within this garden we found John & Duncan trying to blend into the landscape. Many of the visitors enjoyed the cactus garden which had many weird shapes and in the hot house bright coloured plants with beautiful flowers.

2 This was only a small overview of the six gardens which were open, it was necessary to drive to each of them, so it took time and everyone saw different layouts and plantings. At pm members made their way to the Flat Rock Café for a country style two course lunch, with country food and service to match. Everyone appreciated all the lovely gardens and the hard work which had been done to present them all to the public. Lunch also was a success and a very friendly gathering. The reason women don't play football is because 11 of them would never wear the same outfit in public. -Phyllis Diller Best way to get rid of kitchen odours: Eat out. -Phyllis Diller

3 MINI GOLF CHALLENGE Our annual mini golf challenge was held at the Hydro Golf & Putt Putt on Tuesday 30 th October where 17 members teed off to compete for the coveted trophy. The game was played over 18 holes with a staggered start so everyone played at the same time. There was a lot of excitement especially when the hooray went up for someone who managed to score a Hole in one and there were quite a few. At the end those who still had energy went on to complete the full course of 27 holes. The winning team members were Graeme, Lynda, Marlene and Brian Scores will be revealed at our next meeting when the Trophy is presented to the winners. After all this exercise we adjourned for lunch to the Settlers Inn on Hastings River Drive where we were joined by other non-playing members, we ended up with 26 for lunch in the Bistro. A very enjoyable morning which was good exercise and fresh air for us all. Looking forward to next year s event.

4 MELBOURNE CUP Tuesday 6 th November was our special Melbourne Cup Day where we all dress up in our finest attire hoping to win the prizes for Best Dressed Lady and Gentleman. Thanks to our hostess Nicola who opened her home for this big event we had a wonderful time. Our willing helpers cooked and presented us with a sumptuous feast of special dishes ranging from assorted salads, meat loaf, chicken, ham, whole salmon and more. Sweets completed the meal with trifle, cheesecake, and roulade, peanut slice, Pavlova, lemon meringue pie, fruit salad and mini passionfruit tarts. We were greeted with champagne on arrival and invited to place our bets with our resident bookies John & Graeme who ran $5 and $2 sweeps, so that everyone had a horse to cheer on in the race. We thank them for all their hard work in organising this for everyone. After the fashion parade Erica was declared the winner with her lovely blue outfit, cream hat and those special high heel shoes covered in flowers. Then it was the gentlemen s turn to wow us and there was a clear winner Keith who presented in Top Hat and tails with a gold spotted bow tie and a flower in his hat. Congratulations to both our winners. Then it was time to get down to the serious business with the running of the Melbourne Cup. Everyone was very excited and cheering on their horses as we all watched the TV. The winners having been declared we found that John & Teresa were the lucky ones with at least two wins each, plus Lynda who scored a first place. A wonderful day out where we could let our hair down and have fun. Thank you to everyone who made this a memorable day out. After having a few wines to celebrate, we all went home happy and exhilarated.
