4 Project Highlights Hamad, Qatar Role: Master planning, engineering, procurement, and construction management Customer: Government of Qatar (represented by the NDIA Steering Committee) Gatwick, UK London City, UK Role: Project management Customer: London Gatwick Gatwick is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the world, handling about 244,500 operations and 35 million passengers per annum (mppa). Bechtel is supporting the client in managing the airport s capital development program, and providing seconded staff for projects including the upgrade of passenger terminals, concourses, and support facilities, plus all airfield modifications. Role: Delivery partner Customer: London City This five-year contract will see Bechtel partnering to manage delivery of the multi-million dollar City Development Program. Designed to handle a further 30,000 flight movements and 6.5 million passengers by 2025, it will expand the existing terminal as well as add a three-storey passenger pier, seven aircraft stands, and an aircraft taxi lane. McCarran, Role: Project, design, construction management Customer: The Board of County Commissioners, Clark County, Nevada Spanning more than 30 years and six phases, our work at McCarran has tripled the airport s size and enabled passenger traffic to grow from 9.4mppa in 1981 to over 30mppa today. In this time we have delivered everything from feasibility studies and design, to construction and engineering management always sensitive to the live operating environment. As part of its national infrastructure strategy, the State of Qatar launched the development of Hamad. It will serve as a leading transportation hub for the region and facilitate the dynamic growth of Qatar Airways. The airport design features two of the longest runways in the world. This makes it one of the first airports ever to accommodate unrestricted operations by all commercial aircraft including the Airbus A , the world s largest passenger airliner. Bechtel managed the design and construction of 114 facilities through more than 100 individual contract packages, many worth in excess of USD 100 million. The scope also included managing the testing and commissioning of all systems. In addition, Bechtel provided award-winning safety training for the 4,500 supervisors who lead the 47,000-strong workforce. Following completion of the final airport master plan in 2003, Bechtel was selected to provide design, engineering and construction management, contract administration, and project management services for this state-of-the-art airport complex. Master plan work had involved Bechtel s simulation specialists in studying the runway, gate, and facility requirements for the project s three planning horizons. For the detailed design stage, simulations were then developed to fully animate interactive models, and to project passenger flow inside the terminal.
