2 Sustainability and Planning FAA-Airports envisions sustainability becoming a core planning objective, not a secondary activity This approach creates a roadmap to identify ways to: Reduce energy consumption, Reduce environmental impacts, and Become a better neighbor. Federal Aviation 2 2
3 Sustainable Master Plan Pilot Program - Background In May 2010, FAA released interim guidance on the Sustainable Master Plan Pilot Program Involves providing AIP funding for studies that address sustainability as a core objective in long-range planning Pilot program participants will have 2 years to complete their documents 10 airports are participating in the program Federal Aviation 3 3

5 Program Objectives To determine how we can achieve an airport s forecasted demand and meet aviation standards while: Reducing environmental impacts Maintaining economic growth Achieving social progress To collect information for program guidance on sustainability Federal Aviation 5 5
6 Background (continued) Selected airports have the option of: Developing a sustainability chapter within a Master Plan, or Developing a stand-alone document evaluating sustainability at their airport Both studies take a holistic view airport activities (as opposed to project-specific evaluations) Federal Aviation 6 6
7 Required Content Each plan has six required elements: 1. A sustainability policy or mission statement This will also include a description of how the policy will be distributed to employees and external stakeholders 2. Establishment of sustainability categories (e.g., Environmental Resources, Socioeconomics) 3. A baseline assessment/inventory for each category. This includes: Resource usage Emissions inventories Current land uses Federal Aviation 7 7
8 Required Content 4. Establish measurable goals to minimize the impacts/resource consumption of airport activities 5. Identify a range of sustainability initiatives to help the airport achieve each goal 6. Incorporate public participation and outreach to the greatest extent practicable. Examples include: Involving local universities/community groups Distributing the plan to the local community There is significant flexibility within each required element. Diverse solutions/approaches are encouraged Federal Aviation 8 8
9 Next Steps The FAA s Airports Organization is currently preparing/reviewing preliminary documentation for the plans As the documents are prepared, we will be collecting information and lessons learned Both the plans and the process for preparing them will be evaluated at the end of the program As stated earlier, information gathered will be used to develop program guidance Federal Aviation 9 9
