2 Newsletter Distribution The EAA 1310 newsletter is now being sent to the subscribers of the Friends of Skylark Airport distribution list in order to keep more people informed about the activities of the local EAA chapter. To our newly installed President, Alan Witkin, you have my support. Congratulations to EAA1310! Allen McInnish Happy New Year to all, As you and I start the New Year, chapter 1310 begins one also. There are some big happenings planned for 2015 for the airport as well as the EAA Chapter. The Board of directors and new officers held a transition meeting on January 3 rd with the outgoing officers and BOD. I wanted to be sure that we as a group were communicating with each other and that clear lines of responsibility existed. We are working on those ideas to make things better. We discussed whether to include all of the Friends of Skylark Airport (FOSA) in our monthly newsletter distribution. For the time being, the minutes will be sent to all in order to foster additional communications among pilots, aircraft owners and Friends of Skylark. We are working on our yearly calendar of events and planning new events. The Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) school of Aviation wants to build an airplane at the school and train students for their pilot s license and aviation career. It is a big step beyond flying Young Eagles and they have reached out to Chapter 166 and 1310 for assistance. Exactly what form or shape that assistance might be, is yet to be decided. I am excited about the coming year and hope that you will take an active part in the EAA events whether it is our monthly breakfasts, the Young Eagles flight days, the Simsbury fly in event or any one of the other EAA sponsored aviation promotion dates. As a reminder, we have our first monthly meeting this Saturday, January 10th at 1000 am at Skylark. The meeting will be held in the downstairs area where the old pot belly stove was located. 3 Tips for Aviation Photography From Ceiling Unlimited By Andres Baolenbaas, founder of the Dutch Aviation Photographers Group Tip 1: Get up early If you want to take amazing shots you have to work for it, and getting up early goes with the territory. My alarm goes off at 04:30 hours in summer, so that I m ready to take my shots by sunrise. At Schiphol, approaching traffic landing on the Kaag runway is lit beautifully because the sun actually rises facing the runway. The light then shines directly onto the approaching aircraft, and the body and engines are lit perfectly. Once the plane passes you, you can take amazing silhouette photographs if you turn quickly. Underexposing by a few stops can be a solution to heighten the silhouette effect. Aircraft Approaching Amsterdam Underexposing by Two Stops 1 Tip 2: Brave the cold! Winter is a great season for photography. The sun stays relatively low throughout the day. As a result, light falls beautifully onto the subject: the aircraft! Dress warmly; if the cold grips you, operating your camera with a steady hand becomes practically impossible. Preferably use gloves that enable your fingers and palms to grip firmly, preventing the camera from falling out of your hands. A flask of hot coffee certainly helps if you plan to be outdoors for several hours. If you re lucky, you ll find a bed of snow. This can be useful because snow serves as a brilliant reflector, giving the belly of the aircraft extra light as the sun reflects off the ground. You can introduce more detail by overexposing by one stop. Overexposed Sky Shows Detailed Subject Tip 3: Water December, 2014 Page 3 of 8

4 I love water and the sun preferably a combination of the two. Why? Because water reflects the sunlight onto the belly of the aircraft. As if I have an assistant holding a massive reflective screen for me. It also makes a difference if the water is calm or agitated. On a dyke to the south-east of Schiphol there s a canal that aircraft fly over. You can make good use of this canal, especially when photographing landings. Also fiddle around with your exposure compensation settings; you can experiment with this option depending on the level of the sun. And even if you often shoot into the sunlight there, overexposure by one stop can produce good results. Use an average aperture value (F/6.3 ~ F/8.0) in combination with a fast shutter speed. Tip 4: Search for the setting sun Those of you who cannot find the strength to leave your nest before dawn can always wait till sunset to get the ultimate shot the setting sun as it dips beyond the horizon can produce amazing images. The low slung, golden rays of light generate a pleasant feeling of warmth in the photographs. Finding a location where you can see the aircraft taking off into the sun can produce brilliant results. Tip 5: Slow shutter speeds Stray Light Toward Setting Sun To introduce speed and action to your photographs, you could try taking some panning shots. You move the camera at exactly the same speed as the subject, keeping it in perfect focus while the background fades. This technique does take some skill in using your equipment, along with loads of practice in advance. Set your camera to the semiautomatic shutter priority mode, usually denoted by the letter S. Start off slowly with a shutter speed of 1/100. The camera calculates the correct aperture value for you. If you get the feeling you have command over this setting, you can explore your skills and raise it to 1/80 or 1/60. If your lens offers this option, deactivate the image stabiliser setting. If you decide to take shots like this, pick a feature on the aircraft to use as your main point of focus. This could be a door or a logo. Slower Shutter Shows More Propeller Arc This option could come in handy if you photograph propeller-driven aircraft. The slow shutter speed catches the spinning propeller blades making the December, 2014 Page 4 of 8

5 photograph far more dynamic. Otherwise it looks like the aircraft is hanging in mid-air with stationary engines. Tip 6: Know your home base My home base is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. I know every corner, every little road and feel like a fish in water when I move around. When I approach the area around Schiphol all my senses become heightened, I see every movement and get a feeling for the light around me. I try to imagine what the day could bring. Make sure that you are familiar with the surroundings where you plan to take pictures so that you know whether you re allowed there and whether or not it is safe to be there. After all, there s a lot of traffic in and around a big airport and accidents happen when you least expect them. However, that s not cheap and the man needs a lot of training to stay about 30 seconds above ground. Not to mention how dangerous it is. There are alternatives though, like a flight suit, with wings and even with jet engines, but that requires a plane to jump from and even thatt way you won t feel like a bird. Unless you try the bird simulator made by the University of Zurich in partnership with the Design and Research Institute Ide. It s called Birdly and it resembles a massage table fitted with a fan and some hydraulic pistons. That s because you have to lay on it, face forward, strap yourself to the arm controls and put on a pair of Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles to seee the world like a hawk. From here, all you need to do is flap you arms and enjoy the ride. Oh, it even emits smells to aid with the immersion. FAA Could Shut Down AirVenture Flight Sharing EAA operates a web page that arranges flights to and from our annual conventsion for people that have extra seats, and are looking to share a ride to Oshkosh. 6 e/plan-your-eaa-airventure-trip/rideshare Recently, a startup company called Flytenow began a service of running an online service where people can post if they have extra seats available for a flight. People interested in going on that flight can arrange a cost-sharing with the pilot for the cost of fuel, fees and rental associated with the flight. The FAA has ordered the web site to be shut down, and Flytenow is suing the FAA claiming the rules are vague, among additional items. The FAA says it is legal to offer ride shares on a bulletin board, not not online. For the full story, visit: Elvis Planes up for Sale It appears that the plane s owner, K.G. Coker, who bought them a year after Elvis death in 1978, is having negotiation problems with Elvis Presley Enterprises, which owns Graceland. The two planes have been part of Graceland s exhibit ever since it was opened up to the public. Coker was getting a cut on every ticket sale but it looks like his contract won t be renewed. Meriden Airport 213 Evansville Ave Meeting Room, Airport Terminal Meriden, CT /SPANS/event_registration.aspx?eid=59481 Power Plant Proposed ½ mile from Oxford runway A natural gas fired 800 MW power plant is being proposed in Oxford on Woodruff Road. That area is about ½ mile from the center of Oxford airport, and there is a concern by the FAA and area pilots that the stacks and emmission from them will be a hazard to flight operations in the area. One local flight instructor interviewed did not think the plant would be a hazard. The reports noted that this person is a member of the Oxford Economic Development Council. There were approximately 100 other people protesting the project at a meeting of the Connecticut Siting Council on November 13. There will be a hearing held on January 15 th at Oxford High School. Chapter members are encouraged to staff the table to encourage people to learn more about us and recreational aviation. Contact Russ Beers or Ken Benson if you ll be able to help. The chapter has received a donation of a folding display board. It s about 32 high. The center section is 24 wide, and there s two 12 wide panels on each side. We re looking for material to display on the board to attract visitors. The Museum will hold two events on Sunday, January 18 th. The Museum also will feature a scale model display presented by the Western New England Chapter of the Wings and Wheels Model Club. This scale model show will feature hundreds of model airplanes, military vehicles, figures, ship and cars. There will be ongoing demonstrations by modelers who will be working on and building models throughout the day. The Museum will hold an Open Cockpit Day where visitors will be permitted to climb into the cockpits of up to 10 vintage aircraft, a full- simulators. These include motion flight simulator and two static flight the Vietnam era Huey helicopter, the North American F-100 Super Sabre jet fighter, the Coast Guard HH-52 rescue helicopter, the Coast Guard HU-25 Falcon, the Lockheed F-104C Starfighter and more.
