For more information United Counties of Leeds & Grenville info@uclg.on.ca - L T HISTORY eeds & Grenville has a rich history dating back over 200 years. he region was founded largely by United Empire Loyalists, individuals who were still loyal to the Crown after the American Revolution. Many found their former homes inhospitable and wanted to begin new lives across the border. Land grants from the British government made the transition easier, and several of the communities established by the Loyalists are still flourishing today and have grown into major city centres. Agriculture was the staple industry, and still is the backbone of many communities. However, it was not long before other local industries began to emerge. Mills were usually first to appear. Communities sprung up around them, growing in size and number, and encouraged other industries into the area. The Spencerville Mill and the Old Stone Mill in Delta are two of the oldest grist mills still standing in Leeds & Grenville. The Delta Mill is one of the oldest stone mills in Ontario and has been designated as a National Historic Site (N.H.S.). Both mills have been restored and are now open to the public. Other prominent industries in Leeds & Grenville were cheese factories, blacksmith shops, tanneries, saw mills, and furniture factories. Although many of these smaller industries have disappeared, a few, such as the Forfar Cheese Factory, still exist and are thriving today. Today, Leeds & Grenville consists of 10 member municipalities and 3 separated or independent municipalities Also located in the region is the Rideau Canal. Considered to be an engineering masterpiece since its completion 175 years ago, the canal has connected communities over its 202 kilometres and through a series of 24 lock stations. Currently a National Historic Site and nominated as a World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal is North America s oldest continually operating canal. Originally constructed as an alternative shipping route to the St. Lawrence River, the canal became an important commerce route.the communities that sprung up alongside the canal once depended upon the water for commerce; however, now the many marinas and harbours depend on it for recreation. 6 FRONT OF YONGE LEEDS AND THE THOUSAND ISLANDS h ome to the St. Lawrence Islands National Park. T his rural area, with many beautifully maintained century farmsteads, is located just 20 minutes west of Brockville. A beautiful location with a plentiful history, this quiet community was once the site of the Mallorytown Glassworks Factory, 1839, the oldest glass factory in Ontario. Although no longer in existence, a historic plaque now marks its location. St. Lawrence Islands National Park was established by the Federal Government in 1904 and became the first National Park east of the Canadian Rockies. It consists of 21 islands and a mainland base located at Mallorytown Landing. Most islands have docks, trails, shelters and camping facilities. Front of Yonge is also home to a Provincial Park and six campgrounds, making it a virtual kaleidoscope of colour in the autumn. What better way to experience the community than with a drive along the scenic 1000 Islands Parkway running parallel to the St. Lawrence River. unrivaled in natural beauty, a place where one can dare to dream. W ith the slogan Leeds Leads, this young municipality, formed on January 1, 2001, has certainly proved itself in its two major enterprises: hospitality and agriculture. The Lansdowne Fair, a favourite among locals and visitors alike, has been held yearly since 1864, and is a prime example of how deep the community s agricultural roots are. Located in the Village of Lyndhurst is the historic Lyndhurst Bridge, the oldest single-lane stone bridge in Ontario. The Township includes the Gananoque River and approximately 950 of the Islands located in the region. It also straddles the Frontenac Axis, a geological formation linking the Canadian Shield to New York s Adirondack Mountains. The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Come Reserve and covers See a large portion of the Township, and has been designated as a United Nations Biosphere Reserve. In addition, the wetlands also located within the Township borders, are home to many species of birds, waterfowl, reptiles and wild animals. D iscover the rich heritage and small town charm that Merrickville-Wolford has to offer. It has been said that the Village of Merrickville is one of the best maintained 19 th century villages in all of Ontario. Over the course of its history, Merrickville-Wolford has been home to numerous mills and factories, most of which are now gone. Perhaps more known today for its tourism and commerce, the Municipality still takes pride in its rural roots, hospitality and friendly service. In fact, the Village of Merrickville-Wolford invites everyone to come and enjoy its many festivals and fairs, including car shows and artisan tours. A walk down St. Lawrence Street in Merrickville, not only showcases the unique shops which it is known for, but also highlights the beautiful Rideau Canal that runs through the village. With shopping, dining and accommodation experiences second to none, Merrickville-Wolford has something for everyone. O ne of the fastest growing local municipalities, both residential and commercial, its proximity to Ottawa and Highway 416 allows for excellent development opportunities. However, even with its expansion, North Grenville has its heart in agriculture. Not only is it the home of Eastern Breeders Inc. and the Kemptville Campus of the University of Guelph, but also located within its borders is the Ferguson Forest Centre, a non-profit corporation that works to ensure the continuous supply and stock of primarily native trees and shrubs. All these places are available to be toured (by appointment).the Municipality was also the residence of G. Howard Ferguson, former Premier of Ontario (1923 to 1930) and has recently become home to the first traffic roundabout in Leeds & Grenville, located on County Road 43.
