In an effort to build on the Town s many assets, Council adopted a comprehensive Strategic Plan in 2010 which focused on six key areas of improvement - fairer taxation, better customer service, strengthening our robust agricultural and tourism sectors, diversification of commercial, light industrial and residential development, and balancing service with affordability. our community
5 New Outlet Centre business opportunities While Niagara-on-the- Lake is perceived by many as a premier tourism and agricultural centre, it is also home to prime employment lands. Located primarily in Glendale, the Virgil Business Park and surrounding the Niagara District Airport, these areas provide excellent opportunities for commercial hubs, light manufacturing, distribution and other retail uses. Glendale is the Town s largest employment area and is designated as primary prestige industrial lands due to its proximity to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which connects Glendale the Greater Toronto Area to the United States border. In addition, most of Ontario s 350 tender fruit growers are located in Niagara and lead the industry in the best and juiciest products grown.
8 culture & heritage Our citizens play an important stewardship role in conserving and promoting their cultural heritage as a living legacy for future generations. The Queen-Picton Conservation District, the National Heritage District of Old Town and the outlaying rural, village areas are home to hundreds of well-preserved heritage buildings, many dating back to Some of our many historical attractions include Fort George, Sir General Isaac Brock s Monument, the Niagara Historical Society Museum, and the MacKenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum the restored home of rebel publisher William Lyon MacKenzie. 9 Residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake, many of whom are descendents of multi-generational families, are a close community of hard-working people who take pride in their ancestral and agricultural heritage. They feel strongly about their community and continue to strive for excellence in municipal service standards. Over the years, these services have grown to include 15 public parks and playgrounds, six golf courses, two arenas, an environmentallyinnovative sports park and splash pad, a recently-built public library adjoined to a stateof-the-art Community Centre and most recently, a public transit system, which serves residents and visitors. The Town also has four elementary schools, as well as a campus for Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology. The Campus, which is located next to breathtakingly beautiful lands designated under UNESCO, is home to the Canadian Food and Wine Institute, the first of its kind in the country. Drawing on its close partnership with Niagaraon-the-Lake s hospitality sector, the Institute specializes in wine and beer making and the culinary arts. quality of life
10 Transportation Access Whether travelling by land, water or air, we are conveniently located and easily accessible to major urban centres, such as the Greater Toronto Area and Western New York; as well as local markets in Buffalo, NY, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, Ontario.
