1 Welcome to the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit, a unit of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. The Kettle Moraine is internationally known for its spectacular glacial features and fascinating diversity of plants and animals. We encourage you to stop in at the Henry S. Reuss to learn more about our glacial past and to plan your stay in the Kettle Moraine. Throughout the year, the forest naturalists present a wide array of fun-filled educational programs. The programs are held at the, Mauthe Lake Recreation Area, Long Lake Recreation Area, or at other spots within the forest. There are programs for all interests and age levels. Check out this brochure to find opportunities which pique your fancy. Programs are free, but some forest locations do require a Wisconsin State Park System Vehicle Admission Sticker. 2 May 2015 An Evening with Nature Join us for the final programs in this season's Evening with Nature Series for people over 12 years old. Wetlands of Wisconsin May 14, 7:00-8:30 pm (Thursday) Presenter: Erin O Brien, Policy Director Wisconsin Wetland Association Why do wetlands matter, where are they, and how can we protect them? Join Erin as she shares basic wetland ecology, how to identify them, and where to get more information. Find out what work the Wisconsin Wetland Association is doing with private landowners and local governments to support wetland conservation work. Exploring Nature Programs Everyone is invited to participate in one and a half to two hours of hands-on nature fun. Adults are encouraged to work with their children. These programs are best for families/groups with children ages 6 to 12 years old unless otherwise noted. Birding the Hot Spots of the Northern Unit Natural Resources Foundation Field Trip May 9, 8:00-11:00 am (Saturday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Picnic Shelter More than 230 bird species have been identified in the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit. Travel with the Forest Naturalist to check for all those spring migrants at the birding hot spots of the Northern Unit. This field trip is best for people over 10 years old. Register for this field trip through the Wisconsin Natural Resources Foundation. Split Lives of Amphibians May 16, 10:00-11:30 am (Saturday) Frogs, toads, and salamanders abound in the Kettle Moraine. Learn about their split lives between water and land and which species call this area home. Nature Storytimes An hour of nature fun awaits 3 to 6 year olds with accompanying adults. Join us for stories, games, crafts, and songs on the first and third Thursdays or Fridays of each month. Programs are held at the Ice Age Visitor Center. Diggin' Dirt May 1, 9:30-10:30 am (Friday) May 7, 6:00-7:00 pm (Thursday) Be prepared to get a little dirty as we unearth what makes up dirt. We'll investigate what lives on and in the soil. Dandy Ducks May 15, 9:30-10:30 am (Friday) May 21, 6:00-7:00 pm (Thursday) Little ducks, big ducks, colorful ducks, drab ducks, diving ducks, dabbling ducks... There are so many dandy ducks! Wade with us through the wonderful world of ducks. Fading into Darkness Night Hike May 22, 8:30-10:00 pm (Friday) Zillmer Trails Area (located off County Road SS between County Road G and Hwy 67 near New Prospect) As the sun sets and the light fades from the sky, the day animals retire and a new group of animals awakens. Bring your bug spray and sense of adventure as we listen for the sounds of the night. This hike is for families/groups with children at least 5 years old.

The program involves completing a required number of engaging nature activities in one of three age appropriate books (ages 3-5, ages 6-8, and ages 9+) to earn a very cool patch. Get help from a naturalist who will work with youth on activities from one of the first four topic areas of the books. Summer Saturday Evening Events Sponsored by Friends of the Kettle Moraine Meet at the or the location listed for informative and entertaining presentations. Forest staff or guest presenters will provide programs on a wide array of topics. These programs are appropriate Wolves of the Upper Great Lakes May 23, 7:00-8:30 pm (Saturday) Presenters: Debbie Hinchcliffe and Jerry Sanders Delve into the amazing life of the gray wolf. Learn how they are recovering after being extirpated from Wisconsin and what the next steps are in sustaining a healthy population of gray wolves in the Great Lakes region. Bring Back the Pollinators May 30, 7:00-8:30 pm (Saturday) Presenter: Carrie Caselton Lowe Ecologist and Organic Farmer Drop In at the Beach Drop in on the forest naturalists on Saturday or Sunday afternoon at the Long Lake or Mauthe Lake Recreation Area. They will have artifacts, activities, and answers to your nature and outdoor questions. Come for a few minutes or more than an hour for some nature fun. Adults are encouraged to participate with their children. Did you know native pollinators are essential for worldwide food production? In some cases, wild pollinators improve fruit set of plants at twice the rate of honey bees. But native pollinators face serious declines with some on the brink of extinction. Whether you are a gardener, farmer, beekeeper, or just interested, find out ways to help bring back the pollinators. Plan to build and take home a simple bee nest to start building pollinator habitat in your yard and community. Drop in to meet creatures with a lot of legs and find out a few new things about these incredible animals.

4 June 2015 Special Events Wisconsin s Free Fun Weekend June 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday) For this weekend admission is free to all properties in the Wisconsin State Park System and no trail passes are required to mountain bike, horseback ride, or bike the Rails-to-Trails state trails. It s also free fishing weekend, so no fishing licenses required. Come enjoy a day in the great outdoors! Geocaching Cache In Trash Out Event June 6, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (Saturday) Put your geocaching skills to the test while cleaning up the Long Lake Recreation Area and Zillmer Trails. Register at the and then head out for some fun and challenging caches for geocachers of all skill levels. Prizes for the most trash collected and caches found. It is Wisconsin s Free Fun Weekend so no vehicle admission sticker is required for this event. Spring into Summer Nature Fest June 7, 12:00-3:30 pm (Sunday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Journey out on Wisconsin s Free Fun Weekend to the Spring into Summer Nature Fest! There will be something for all ages at four different activity stations. Learn about invading aliens, take flight with the birds of a feather, celebrate the summer sun, and create your own fish prints. Bring a T-shirt or bandanna to print on or purchase one that day. No vehicle admission sticker required since it is Wisconsin s Free Fun Weekend. Earth, Music... Listening to the simple beauty of primitive musical instruments... It s a magical combination that just might leave you a bit more in awe of this magnificent universe and the beautiful planet, which we all share together and call our home! Canoe Adventure June 25, 6:30-8:30 pm (Thursday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Boat Launch Venture by canoe around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. Get a close look at the natural communities within and bordering the lake and river. Basic canoe skills will be covered. To register, call (920) by June 24. Class limit is 24 to 30 people without canoe equipment. No experience is necessary. In the event of threatening weather, the program will be canceled. Travel with us to the salamander's home to learn about these wondrous creatures. A Tale of a Tree's Life June 18, 6:00-7:00 pm (Thursday) June 19, 9:30-10:30 am (Friday) Join us as we spin a tale of a tree's life from seed to rotting log. We'll even head to the woods to visit the trees and find out their stories.

Bring your bug spray and sense of adventure as we solve the mysteries of the night lights. This night hike is for families/groups with children at least 5 years old. Uncover what foreign species are taking over our native communities and what can be done to help control their spread. You will have a chance to make several unique crafts including a smashed-plant bandanna. Bring your own bandanna or purchase one that day for a small fee. Marvelous Mammals June 20, 1:00-4:00 pm (Saturday) June 21, 12:00-3:00 pm (Sunday) What do humans have in common with bears, bats, mice, and deer? We're all mammals! Discover what characteristics mammals share and how they're adapted for survival. Get Outdoors! Try your hand at tracking animals, honing your fishing skills, taking the eco-explorer challenge, matching young critters with their parents, and creating original nature art.

6 June 2015 Get Outdoors! Go... Have you wanted to try a new outdoor skill or brush up on an old one? Then join us for one of our Get Outdoors! Go... programs to learn a new skill or two from experienced instructors. These programs are best Learn to Fly Fish June 6, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (Saturday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Picnic Shelter Do you marvel at those fly fishing anglers, but can t quite figure out how they do it? Learn from Trout Unlimited fly anglers the correct way to use fly fishing gear and tackle to catch a whole variety of fish. Bring your own gear, if you have some. A number of rods and reels will be available for participants use. Class size is limited. To register, call (920) by May 27. It is Wisconsin s Free Fun Weekend so you do not need a fishing license or vehicle admission sticker. This program is best for people at least 12 years old. Learn to Fish Rodeo with Fish Biologists Tools of the Trade Demonstration June 6, 3:00-6:00 pm (Saturday) Long Lake Recreation Area Fishing Pier Let the fishing fun begin! After completing the fishing skills rodeo, experienced anglers on the fishing pier will help hone your newly acquired skills. Bring your own gear or fishing gear will be provided for those who need it. No fishing license or vehicle admission sticker required since it is Wisconsin s Free Fun Weekend. Fyke nets, shockers, and fish tags are a few of the tools fishery biologists use in their jobs. Come see firsthand how these tools are used to determine the health of a lake s fish population. Find Your Way with Map and Compass June 11, 6:30-8:30 pm (Thursday) How did people find their way before GPS units? They used maps and compasses. Learn the skills to use an orienteering compass along with a topographic map, and then practice your new skills to find your path through the woods. This workshop is for people over the age of 10 years. Twilight Paddle June 20, 6:30-8:30 pm (Saturday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Boat Launch Join us for an evening canoe trip around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. As we paddle, we will keep our eyes and ears open for evening birds and other wildlife. To register, call (920) by June 19. Class limit is 24 to 30 people without canoe equipment. These programs are appropriate Wriggling Worm Invaders June 6, 7:00-8:30 pm (Saturday) Presenter: Bernie Williams DNR Invasive Species Specialist Worms: great fish bait, wonderful garden soil aerators, but not native to Wisconsin? Unearth amazing facts about worm biology and why our state does not have indigenous earthworms. Then learn how these legless creatures impact the health of our state s plant communities, especially forests. Be prepared to head outside for a scientific worm investigation. Wisconsin s Mighty Mussels June 13, 6:30-8:30 pm (Saturday) Presenter: Lisie Kitchel, DNR Conservation Biologist Warty purpleback, monkeyface, and creek heelsplitter sound like kids nicknames, but they are just a few of Wisconsin s 51 species of mussels. These clam-like animals (bivalves) have truly intriguing life cycles, which includes finding a host animal for their young, and play fascinating roles in our past and present economy. We may travel to a local river to go on a mussel hunt, so bring your water shoes.

Wisconsin Butterflies July 9, 7:00-8:30 pm (Thursday) Presenter: Dr. Douglas Buege, President Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association Join Dr. Buege as he enlightens us to the diversity of butterflies found in Eastern Wisconsin - from very common to endangered species. He will introduce the basics of butterflying and explain how people can become citizen scientists so that they can contribute to butterfly ecology via the Internet. Dragons of Summer July 16, 6:00-7:00 pm (Thursday) July 17, 9:30-10:30 am (Friday) These dragons don't breathe fire, but they do eat a lot of flying insects. Come uncover the amazing facts about dragonflies, our dragons of summer. Climb a Kame July 23, 7:00-8:30 pm (Thursday) and Dundee Mountain Presenter: Jackie Scharfenberg, Forest Naturalist After the glaciers melted away, they left behind a very distinctive landscape. Join us as we climb Dundee Mountain to gain a better understanding of how the glaciers created kames, eskers, moraines, kettles, and outwash plains. The trail is one and half miles long and it does require hiking up and down a steep hill. We will meet at the and then car pool the three miles to the Dundee Mountain Summit Trail. These programs are best Learn to Kayak July 25 (Saturday) 9:30 am - 12:00 pm OR 1:00-3:30 pm Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Boat Launch This is the perfect program for people who have never kayaked and would like to learn. Join American Canoe Association instructors to learn the tricks and fun of flat water kayaking. We will kayak around Mauthe Lake and up the Milwaukee River. To register, call (920) by July 23. A $25 deposit must be paid to hold a registration and will be refunded at the workshop. Each session is limited to eight people without equipment and eight with kayaks. No experience is necessary. These programs are appropriate Back from the Brink Whooping Crane Conservation in North America July 4, 6:30-8:00 pm (Saturday) Presenter: Abby Howell-Dinger International Crane Foundation Back from the brink, North America s whooping crane is a sign of hope for endangered species. Recovering from a low of only 21 individuals in 1944 to just over 560 birds today, the whooping crane s recovery is one of conservation s most inspiring success stories. Learn about the natural history of the whooping crane, efforts for reintroductions, techniques of captive breeding, and ways humans can help.

Learn the special adaptations of these remarkable reptiles and what habitat requirements they need to survive. You may even have the opportunity to meet live turtles. Sky Hunters Birds of Prey July12 18, 7:00-8:15 pm (Saturday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Picnic Shelter Presenter: Schlitz Audubon Center Wisconsin is home to several species of raptors from the large red-tailed hawk to the tiny screech owl. You will have the opportunity to examine raptor artifacts, meet live birds, and find out ways you can help these spectacular birds survive. Winged Mammals: Bats July 25, 7:00-8:30 pm (Saturday) Presenters: Barbara and Ken Bowman Bat Conservation of Wisconsin Bats are often shrouded in mystery and misunderstandings. Wisconsin Bats August 13, 7:30-9:00 pm (Thursday) Mauthe Lake Recreation Area Picnic Shelter Presenter: Paul White, DNR Bat Ecologist Eight bat species call Wisconsin home. Several species migrate to warmer climates for winter, while the others hibernate in caves and mines. The cave bats now face the threat of annihilation from white nose syndrome. Learn what must be done to protect them and how to record where bats live in our state. We will go on a short walk to search for bats using a special bat detector. Wisconsin Gems State Natural Areas August 27, 6:30-8:00 pm (Thursday) and Spruce Lake Bog Presenter: Joe Henry, DNR Ecologist The State Natural Areas protects and preserves many plant communities that have had little or no disturbance by European settlement. Learn about this fascinating program and where and how to explore these spectacular natural gems. After the inside presentation, we will carpool three miles to Spruce Lake Bog, a State Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark.
