PROJECT OVERVIEW Baphumelele Children s Home is based in the heart of Khayelitsha, South Africa s largest single township close to Cape Town. Baphumelele was established in 2001 by Rosie Mashala as a care centre for abused and abandoned children and provides a safe haven and loving home for these children who would otherwise face a life on the streets. Baphumelele does not discriminate against children on age or medical grounds, accepting all children who are in need. From humble beginnings with a small group of local volunteers, Baphumelele has grown to include a Community Health Information Centre, a Soup Kitchen, a HIV Respite Centre, a Crèche for 200 local children, and a Wood Workshop. Today Baphumelele houses approximately 70 children ranging in age from new born to 18 years and provide employment for nearly 50 local people. Children are placed here by Social Services or the Police for a variety of reasons including poverty, lack of a primary carer, neglect, abuse and rape. Baphumelele is a long term home for children, but also looks after children on a shorter term basis as it is a registered place of safety. AVIVA have been working with Baphumelele Children s Home since July 2004 and our volunteers continue to play an important role by supporting the permanent staff with caring for the children aged from 0-18 years old. Visits from singers Beyonce Knowles, U2's Bono, Sir Elton John and the Manchester United Football team have provided Baphumelele with much needed publicity, though they still have a real need for volunteers who are able to assist the care givers, particularly with child developmental play, laundry, washing, feeding, food collection and a variety of other tasks. This project is especially suited to emotionally mature volunteers aged 18 years or older. The nature of the work requires patience, and the ability to focus on the children s needs at all times. You will need to be in reasonably good physical condition as the work involves bending, kneeling and crouching for periods of time and may also involve lifting or holding children during planned activities. To ensure effective communication between all staff members, a good understanding of the English language is also required. Personal characteristics such as flexibility and having a compassionate heart will be more than useful during your stay. Though not a strict requirement, previous experience in working with children will also be helpful. WHAT S INCLUDED? 3 ARRIVING IN CAPE TOWN AVIVA House is located in Table View, an established suburb of Cape Town. Table View is close to Blouberg Beach, which is famous for its classic postcard views of Table Mountain. This area is also home to Home of Hope, the African Penguin & Seabird Conservation project, the School Feeding Program and AVIVA Head Office. Getting there... You should aim to arrive in Cape Town on or before your chosen start date. When you arrive in Cape Town, a member of the AVIVA team will be there to welcome you at the airport. We will escort you to AVIVA House and help you to settle in. WORKING ROUTINE Depending on which team you are allocated to (Blue or Pink), your first visit to Baphumelele will normally be during the first few days following your arrival in Cape Town. We provide all transfers between AVIVA House & Baphumelele, and will introduce you to the team for a full orientation on your first day there. Volunteer teams work shifts of 3 days at Baphumelele, and sleep in the volunteer flat at the Home. This is followed by 3 days off, staying at AVIVA House. This allows plenty of time for you to recharge your batteries, relax and explore Cape Town during your free time. For the remainder of your stay, your volunteer schedule will be shown on the AVIVA House notice board so you will know in advance which days you will be helping out. The working day usually starts at 8am and finishes around 7pm, however there are plenty of breaks during the day and you will have time to relax during the evening.

DAILY TIMETABLE While at Baphumelele, your daily timetable will look something like this. Please remember to offer your services rather than waiting to be told, and use your initiative to get things started in good time: 08:00 (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) - Visit each cluster home and complete basic medical report. Take dirty medicine containers, wash syringes, dry & pack away. Help with snack time at Baby House. Help with hanging washing. 09:00 Targeted Play & Specialised Care (Outside if possible), e.g. Physio with disabled children Pre-organised activity like colouring at the table... Play dough Music aerobics Taking the children for a walk to the Jungle Gym area. 10:15 Grade R reading group. 4 year old crèche children painting group. Help with school activities for non-school kids. 12:00 Prepare tables and chairs for lunch in Baby House. Clean up after lunch and pack away. Close blinds for sleep time. 14:45 Help with folding laundry. Help with reading groups/homework/computer in green house. 17:00 Set out tables and chairs for supper in Baby House. Make drinks. Wash any dishes. Get pyjamas ready. 18:00 Help with dressing after bath, teeth brushing & sterilising toothbrushes. Put children in to bed and close blinds. Read story in each room. End of shift! Where there is time and you are keen to do more, there are always plenty of other tasks than can be taken on. This might include cleaning up an area of the grounds, painting and decorating, working in the kitchen garden or sorting out donations. There may also be occasional outings or fun activities on the weekends, which need volunteer assistance. After you have learned the basics, you will be involved in mentoring new volunteers on their first shift to help them settle in quickly too.

USEFUL PROJECT INFORMATION The following guidelines will help you to make the most of your time at Baphumelele Children s Home and enable you to make a positive and beneficial contribution to the lives of the children. Confidentiality We understand that you may want a photo with the children you have been caring for, but to maintain confidentiality and respect for privacy, you may not take photographs of the children yourself. If you would like a photograph to be taken, you must speak to the on-site volunteer coordinator to arrange this. Health & Safety Although no compulsory inoculations are required for travel to South Africa, we do advise that you ensure your Polio and Tetanus vaccinations are in date prior to arrival. Please note: a Rabies vaccination is not required. Please consult your doctor before volunteering if you are pregnant or on medication. In the unlikely event that you are become ill or are injured, we have excellent medical and hospital facilities within the local area. You must also ensure that you have adequate medical/travel insurance for the duration of your stay. Hygiene is of special importance when dealing with children, so we recommend that you pay special attention to personal cleanliness. To prevent the spread of infection, please wash your hands before preparing food. For the same reason, do not allow the children to put their fingers in your mouth. Set aside 3 sets of comfortable clothing for working at Baphumelele and wash them regularly. It is essential that you have a clean set of clothes on each day as you are considered to be part of the team, and will need to look the part. Please ensure that you do not wear very short or revealing clothing, and that you are appropriately dressed. Volunteer Behaviour... As you will be working with children and young adults in protected care, there are certain behaviours which will result in the immediate termination of your services at Baphumelele. Any behaviour of an aggressive nature, either physical or otherwise, towards any of these children or young adults. No swearing or inappropriate language. Do not be in a room alone with children with the door closed. Always leave the door open, or have more than one adult present. Do not allow any children into the AVIVA flat. No inappropriate relationships with the children in care. Please remember that you are here as a role model and mentor rather than to be pals with the children. Any removal of a child from the premises of Baphumelele without the prior agreement of the Head Social Worker. Do not invite or meet any children off site. Smoking or the consumption of alcohol is not permitted on Baphumelele Children s Home premises. Please note: These children need you at your best, so we highly recommend an early, alcohol free night if you are on duty the following day. If you arrive at Baphumelele under the influence of alcohol, or suffering from the effects of a late night, you will be asked to leave. Repeated occurrences will result in you being removed from the project. Possession of any illegal substances on the premises of Baphumelele.

USEFUL PROJECT INFORMATION (continued) Discipline... This is the responsibility of the caregivers. If a child is being naughty, please alert the caregiver as to what is going on. Usually it is a case of children sitting too close to each other so they start fighting, or they are fighting over a toy. In this type of case, just move the kids apart. The usual way of dealing with a child who is being naughty is to sit them quietly at the feet of the caregivers until they calm down. Do not shout, restrain or be rough with the children much of the behaviour may be related to medical conditions e.g. deafness or foetal alcohol syndrome. Getting around during your time off... Conveniently, we have a MyCiti Bus Stop just across the road from AVIVA House. This is very popular with all volunteers as, for only R10 per trip (approx 80p, 0.90, or $1.30), it provides very cheap, safe and reliable transport to Cape Town and the V&A Waterfront area. You can find out more about the MyCiti Bus here if you like: Extra time off during your project... A shift plan will be available to allow you to plan for your days off. Breaks consist of 3 days and 3 nights, so if you are hoping to include longer tours (e.g. a visit to Kruger or the Garden Route), please make sure you allow extra time to do these before or after your placement. Please remember that Baphumelele has to plan ahead for staffing requirements, so requests for extra time off can impact on them and other volunteers. For this reason, requests for extended periods of time off during your project are unlikely to be granted.

WHAT CAN I DO IN CAPE TOWN? Without doubt, Cape Town is South Africa's most beautiful, romantic and popular city and recently came 1st in the TripAdvisor Traveller s Choice Destination Awards. 9 WEATHER IN CAPE TOWN Cape Town is never out of season, with a particularly good, long summer from November to March. These are the most popular months for normal tourists, who come to enjoy the 11 or more hours of sunshine every day. The average summer temperature in Cape Town is 24.3 degrees Centigrade, with January and February temperatures averaging 26 degrees Centigrade. February is the driest month of the year, with only 15 mm (0.6 inches) of rain. Spring (September/October) and Autumn (April/May) are also excellent times to visit Cape Town as they are usually in-between seasons, when nature is at its showiest. While Cape Town s winters (June to August) can be stormy, they often produce perfectly temperate days, with June & July being our busiest months for volunteer arrivals. The average temperature during Cape Town s winter season is between 7 and 20 degrees Centigrade. It s not uncommon, however, to enjoy a week of sunshine and temperatures ranging between 21 and 26 degrees Celsius and there are never any frosty mornings. Average daily sunshine is between 7.5 and 9.5 hours (London = 3.8 hours; New York = 6.9 hours) Average maximum daily temperatures ( C) for Cape Town are as follows: Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO? We believe that it is important for you to know how your money is spent and ensure that your fee is structured to give you maximum value for money whilst benefitting the children at Baphumelele. As you will see from the chart and fee breakdown below, the majority of your fee goes towards your accommodation and transport. All prices are shown in South African Rands (R). 10 AVIVA HOUSE AVIVA House in Table View (a suburb of Cape Town) provides a safe, secure home from home for volunteers who are working at local projects or taking time-out from projects further afield to explore Cape Town and the Western Cape. This will be your main home during your entire stay and you will be able to leave any of your belongings here while you are on shift at Baphumelele. AVIVA House is close to the main bus route and good value taxi services are also available for access to the centre of Cape Town. In Table View you will find a wide range of shops and restaurants, and of course, some great beaches with scenic views of Table Mountain and Cape Town across the bay. With great shopping facilities and a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, Table View is a popular destination for locals throughout Cape Town. A laundrette offering a drop-off and collect service is only 5 minutes walk from AVIVA House. Laundry is charged at approx R50 per 5kg load, and includes washing, powder, dry and fold. AVIVA House is comfortably furnished with all the facilities you might expect to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible. 11 BAPHUMELELE All meals are self-catering with good shopping facilities close to AVIVA House for all your food and personal needs. We recommend that teams cook together or bring pre-prepared food to Baphumelele as this will save time and money (there is no possibility to buy extra food whilst at Baphumelele). You will spend 3 out of every 6 nights in the volunteer accommodation at Baphumelele. For your comfort, each team is normally limited to a maximum of 6 volunteers. This basic, comfortable accommodation includes: Facilities: Two bedrooms with three beds in each - good quality mattresses, bedding and linen provided. Kitchen facilities - a two-ring electric stove, microwave oven, fridge freezer, toaster, kettle and everything you need for preparing your meals. Milk, tea, coffee and sugar are provided. A small lounge. Shower and toilet facilities. Premises are cleaned once per week, usually on a Friday. Please ensure that you take fresh linen from AVIVA House for your shift, and return this to AVIVA House for washing on your return. Your bare duvets and pillows should be neatly stacked on each bed ready for the next team to arrive. For the comfort of all volunteers, AVIVA House rules also apply to the volunteer accommodation at Baphumelele (a copy is available to download from our web site). There is no housekeeper at Baphumelele, so you will be responsible for keeping the accommodation clean and tidy at all times. Volunteers must not allow children to enter the volunteer accommodation at any time. We will supply cleaning materials and consumable items (e.g. toilet rolls, hand soap, washing up liquid) for the volunteer accommodation. Please let your AVIVA Volunteer Coordinator (Megan) know if anything is in short supply so that she can purchase items ready for the next team change. A volunteer shift handover book is kept at the Baphumelele volunteer accommodation to allow you to record daily activities, events and news that may be of value or interest to the next team. This, in conjunction with team handovers, provides much needed continuity for each team change. There is also a Human Resources officer based at Baphumelele who will supervise your stay, provide training and guidance and answer any questions you have. With each shift change, departing volunteers must ensure that they take their leftover food items, and empty the fridge/freezer of any perishables that belong to them. Please note: Baphumelele and the volunteer accommodation are strictly NO SMOKING and NO ALCOHOL areas. If you are a smoker and cannot last a few nights, you may smoke behind the volunteer accommodation, but not in view of the children.

PACKING FOR MY TRIP Volunteers often ask about bringing items for the children such as books, educational toys etc. These are always welcome (if you have room in your suitcase!), though, if you are considering purchasing anything for the children, we would recommend that you bring your money with you, as you are likely to get much better value for your Euro, Pound or Dollar in South African stores. This will also allow you to see what s actually needed at the time. For the winter months you are advised to bring some warm clothes as the early mornings and late evenings can be very cold then. Sunscreen is an absolute must at any time of year, along with a hat and UV protected sunglasses. If you are bringing your mobile phone and would like to take advantage of cheaper local call rates in South Africa, you can purchase a South African Sim card and Airtime Vouchers here. If, when booking your international flights, you find that you can get a cheaper flight that arrives earlier, or leaves later than the dates we recommend, we can arrange extra accommodation at AVIVA House for you to match your flight dates. This is often worthwhile, as the cost of extra accommodation can be far outweighed by savings on your flight ticket. Please do not worry about what time your flight arrives in South Africa as we can pick you up at any time of day. We also monitor expected landing times for inbound flights, so if your flight is early or delayed, we will still be there to welcome you.
