Thank you to trail maintainers and hike leaders. Thank you to NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Carol Harting, Steve Klepner, and Jane Smalley. THERE WILL BE NO CHAPTER MEETING IN JUNE ENJOY THE MOMENT WITH GOOD PLANNING AND A CAMERA! A great hike is when you are comfortable with the people, the weather, the terrain, your capabilities, the equipment, the scenery, and your feet don t hurt. Preparations are key to a good outing, especially since our outings take place in all four seasons, and each season has a variety of safety precautions. Newcomers are always welcome to join the adventures of the Adirondack Mountain Club. We offer a wide variety of activities locally and around the state, thanks to all the volunteers. Local hikes don t need as much planning as the deeper woods or the mountains. While signing up for a hike, speed, length, weather, elevation, and terrain are the keys to knowing whether it is an easy, moderate, or expert hike and the type of boots, how much water and food is needed, and any winter equipment needed (in season), maps, and parking areas. Know how many people are on the hike. Stay together, especially at intersections. The follower must also let the leader know if they are leaving and if they know the way back. A large group needs a sweep in the back. Have them sign the new release forms recently posted. Learn the weather patterns. The temperature and winds can change at any time. Don t be caught without the essentials (listed below) especially in higher elevations, or near rivers, oceans, etc. Avoid cotton clothing. They stay wet when you sweat. The warm temperatures bring out the snakes, ticks, mosquitos, and increases the risk of thunderstorms. Most of the snakes are not bothersome if you leave them alone. If lightning strikes in the middle of a hike, avoid metal, wires, and being on the highest point. Cold weather dehydrates you faster than warm weather. Drink lots of fluids. Rub your hands together if feeling frozen or put them under your armpits. Gloves inside of mittens works well. Learn the terrain. Get to know how the trails respond to weather conditions. It may be a dry beautiful day, but if it rained two days prior to the hike you will encounter wet leaves, mossy rocks, muddy trails, etc. These areas can turn to ice if the temperature drops below 1

2 32º after a rainfall, and make treacherous conditions. Some areas dry up faster than others. Learn what your capabilities are. Knowing your ability makes it easier to select a hike. Rock scrambling may not be your skill in the current moment, but you can work up to it in time. Start out on easy trails and work up to harder hikes. Long hikes may not be fun now, but you can also gradually get to that level. Hiking poles help the knees when you are going downhill. Learn the basic essentials for hikes. Maps (DO NOT RELY ON ELECTRONICS); compass; flashlight; first aid; tissues; baggies; hand wipes; pens; paper; sunglasses; bug spray; suntan lotion; mini-scissors; matches; moleskin; aspirin; extra socks (SmartWool ); extra shirt; gloves; mittens; hat; poncho; water; food; boots; traction aids and/or snowshoes (winter); etc. Use life preservers for canoeing and kayaking. Separation breaks should be approximately 200 feet from water sources to avoid contamination. The DEC provides a list of safety rules for the outdoor enthusiast. In general, we try to break up the types of hikes into categories, especially for people who are new to the adventure. Each person has their own opinion; but in general, these are some of the hike categories. If a 5- mile flat trail is done in an hour, then that is not easy, because of the speed. Easy Hikes: (2-3 hours, 3-5 miles) rolling hills in between flat surfaces, and no rock scrambling. Examples Rockefeller Park, Edith Read Sanctuary, Rye Marshlands, Croton Aqueduct, Mianus River, Cranberry Lake, etc. Easy-to-Moderate Hikes: (3-5 hours, 5-7 miles) moderate hills in between flat surfaces, a minor scramble, and some obstacles (tree roots; rocks; wooded trails). Examples Mountain Lakes Camp, Fahnestock, Westmoreland Sanctuary, Butler Sanctuary, Pound Ridge, etc. Moderate-Plus hikes: (4 or more hours, more than 5 miles) hills in between flat surfaces, and obstacles (tree roots; rocks; wooded trails; scrambles; steeper hills). Examples: Locally-Minnewaska (carriage roads), Bear Mountain, Harriman Park, Pound Ridge, etc. Moderate to Expert hikes: (longer days, longer rock scrambles, rougher terrains, steeper climbs, temperature changes). Examples: (under 3500 feet) Minnewaska (longer trails), Breakneck Ridge, Anthony s Nose, Catskill Mountains, Adirondack Mountains, Berkshire Mountains, Appalachian Trail, etc. Expert hikes: (long days, steep climbs, rough terrains, scrambles, temperature changes). Examples: (above 3500 feet) Adirondack Mountains, White Mountains, Green Mountains, etc. Enjoy the trails safely! And take pictures! Jean Dolen, Chairperson Werner Hengst, a former Mohican member, died on February 7 th from complications of diabetes. Werner was an avid hiker and sailor and was active with the Wednesday hikers group. Kathie Laug and Jane Restani joined an AMC February crosscountry skiing trip to Yosemite National Park. Snow the previous week provided excellent skiing in the Badger Pass area above the valley, but great weather inspired hiking from the valley to the iconic waterfalls-- Vernal, Nevada and Yosemite. We recommend a winter trip to Yosemite to avoid the summer crowding in the valley and on the trails. Also, winter provides an opportunity to see the natural fireball at Horseshoe Falls. Check it out on line. Submitted by Jane Restani 2

3 Jeanne Thomson and Jane Restani joined the 70+ Ski Club for a delightful outing to Quebec City and environs. They skied at three different resorts and visited the Ice Hotel for a tour and drink. Beautiful but not too many of the group are making reservations for a night on the ice. Perhaps the 60+ group will find it appealing. The spring skiing conditions were excellent, i.e. not too springy. The grand and historic Hotel Frontenac on the St Lawrence River provided a terrific base camp. Be prepared to ski hard to work off the fabulous French cuisine. Submitted by Jane Restani Kathie Laug was pictured in the March-April issue of Adirondac magazine on Page 25. The article centered on 91 year old Ruth Kuhfahl who had been an active member of the Niagara chapter before she moved to Keene Valley. Kathie had been a member of the Niagara Chapter when she lived in Buffalo. Ruth s friends put together a plan for Ruth to hike to JBL with friends from that Chapter and the date was set for August 2015 and Kathie was eager to help celebrate with her friend. After a pre-hike dinner and early birthday celebration on Saturday night for Ruth, who was turning 92 in October, 18 hikes assembled in Keene Valley on Sunday for the hike to JBL. Ruth carried her own pack. On Monday, Ruth toured some of her favorite remembered places near JBL. That night the group picture was taken in front of the JBL fireplace and Kathie is front and center. Tuesday the group hiked back to the Garden. This article is an inspiration to all of us and if you haven t seen the article, go back and look at it. Submitted by Carol Harting At the Trail Conference headquarters at the restored Darlington School House in Mahwah, NJ, a new photo exhibit titled: View from the Trail will open on May 9, 2016 and run through August 22, An ADK Mohican member, Sarah Davis, has a photo titled: View from the Dunning Trail in the show. Sarah is an amazing photographer, and we congratulate her on the photo being exhibited. The closing party for the show will be held Thursday, August 25 th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the headquarters, 600 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahway, NJ Submitted by Sarah Davis We wish Doris and Bill Bosworth the best of health and happiness in their new home. They moved from North Salem, NY to Heritage Village in Southbury, CT, and we hope they will keep in touch with all their friends in the Mohican Chapter. January 2016 Kevin McGahren, Andrew Rohr Rejoined Member: Marilyn Maracic February 2016 Stephen Sagner and Jennifer Tower March 2016 Cathleen Becker, Lester Brickman, Liz & Bill D Imperio, John & Lisa Griffin, Matthew Meister and Leba Wise This column is dedicated to you, our members, whose lives, events, and achievements on and off the trail are to be recognized and shared. If there is a special event, vacation or achievement in your life you would like to share, please send in your news to Annette Grau at gagjinet@aol.com. Saturday, March 26 Fahnestock Loop This is the end of March and the day was cool with sun and clouds appearing alternately throughout the day. 13 hikers mostly new faces, joined leader Jane Smalley to enjoy another great hike in Fahnestock. Submitted by Jane Smalley Sunday, April 10 Saugatuck Reservoir Circuit On April 10 Eileen West led a hike around the entire Saugatuck Reservoir, using trails within the Trout Brook Preserve and Centennial Watershed State Forest in Weston, Easton and Redding, CT. The hike, 3

4 which was on the New York Ramblers schedule, drew ADK/WTA members Carol Harting, Jane Restani, Frank Lee and Simonetta Morrison. The weather was cool and sunny, and despite its length (billed as 12 miles but more like 13.3 miles, at least according to GPS readings) the frequent views above the reservoir and along its shore made it all worthwhile. Submitted by Eileen West Saturday, April 23 Chodikee Lake This was a difficult paddle day due to strong gusty northeast winds kicking up whitecaps on the lake. There were 10 of us; 3 kayaks, 1 tandem kayak, 2 tandem canoes, and the leader s solo canoe. The tandem canoes could not make it out onto the lake... just too windy. It was a good decision and a safe one for the canoes to stay behind. The rest of us headed toward the stream at the northern end fighting the wind all the way. Once we got to the mouth of the stream it was a little easier paddling but still gusts of wind. We passed about 12 beaver houses, saw a great blue heron, and many red wing blackbirds. We had lunch at the falls and walked around seeing some ruins nearby. Returning the wind was behind us so it was like sailing home. Robyn and Bev were there waiting on the dock. The other left early. The leader brought tea, coffee, and cranberry bread for all to enjoy after canoes were put on the car.
