Xinjiang belongs to the continental climate, sunshine enough, rain little, annual rainfall is 150 mms, the day in whole area difference in temperature is general at 12 above. Xinjiang total population is more than 1680 ten thousand people, among them national minority population is more than 1000 myriad people, is 62.1% of total population in whole area, including Uygur, Xan, Kazakhstan, Hui, Mongolia, Kirgiz, Tatar, Man, Russia etc.13 nationalities, the national minority believe in Islamism, one of compact communities where Chinese Muslim live in. Urumqi, also Urumchi or Wu-lu-mu-ch'i, city, northwestern China, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,is one of the country's most important cities open to the outside world like a piece of emerald

4 embedded at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains. For over two thousand years, the area around Urumqi has been lush pastures populated by many minorities who herded sheep and cattle, Urumqi actually meaning "beautiful pastures" in Mongolian. It is an industrial and cultural center of a petroleum-rich region near the Kazakh border. The city lies in a fertile oasis, about 900 m (about 3000 ft) above sea level, located between latitude 43 5 to 44 0 north and longitude 86 0 to 88 5 east on an alluvial fan at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, with the Junggar Basin in the north and surrounded by mountain ranges in the east, west and south, and the Urumqi River flowing through it from south to north, covers an area of 11,440 square kilometers with an elevation of 680 to 920 meters, of which 49.3 square kilometers are covered by the city proper, which is two to six kilometers from east to west and sixteen kilometers from north to south. The total urban planning area of the city is 1,600 square kilometers. Life of the Urumqi Urumqi Grand Bazzar Evening Scenery As the political, economic, cultural, science and technological and information center of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, Urumqi is the hub of communications linking the region with the rest of the country as well as linking it up with various parts north and south of the Tianshan Mountains. Manufactures include iron and steel, cement, agricultural machinery, chemicals, and textiles. Coal and iron-ore deposits are nearby. Products: crops, grains, vegetable oil, vegetables, melons and grapes. Urumqi is a multinational city with a population of 1.5 million and a population density of 101 persons per square kilometer. There are thirteen nationalities living in the city, including the Uygur, Han, Hui, Kazak, Manchu, Mongol, Xibe, and Russian. Of the total population of the city percent are Han nationality; Uygur; 9.87 Hui; 3.10 Kazak; 0.29 Manchu; 0.23 Mongol; 0.16 Xibe and 0.09 Russian. One thing to bear in mind here is the TIME! Although officially run on

5 Beijing time, Xinjiangers also use their own system. Beijing time here means that the sun doesn't rise until 09:00 and it is still light at midnight in the summer months. When making travel arrangements, be sure to check which time zone is being used or you could get caught out! Weather of Urumqi Urumqi is located in the temperate zone of a dry continental climate. The meteorological data indicate that the annual mean temperature in Urumqi has been 7.3 for many years. The highest temperature recorded was 42.1 on August 1, 1973; the hottest month, July, averages The lowest temperature ever recorded was on February 27, 1951; the coldest month, January, averages The annual mean precipitation is 194 millimeters, while the frost-free period averages 179 days per year. 6 Sightseeing Attractions of Urumqi Heavenly Lake Situated in the Heavenly Mountain range (Tianshan), 115 km northeast of Urumqi, Heaven's Lake (Tianchi) is arguably one of the nicest spots in all of China. The huge clear water lake, the pine trees covering the hillsides and the snow capped mountains in the background... Nanshan Grasslands falling... The Nanshan Grasslands (Baiyang gou) are a natural paradise, with scenery and surroundings similar to that at Heaven's Lake.This area, 75km south of Urumqi city is located at the base of the Tian Shan mountain range. This is greatland for hiking with gushing valleys and waterfalls Red Hill Park Red Hill Park(Hongshan Gongyuan) is a pleasant spot to visit to get your bearings when you first arrive in this modern city. The views from the top of the mountain of the surrounding countryside and breathtaking mountains, make the steep (but short) climb worthwhile... Xinjiang Uygur Region Museum The Xinjiang Minority Peoples' Museum (Xinjiang weiwuer zi zhiqu bouwuguan) is definitely worth a visit. This museum houses an impressive collection of exhibits, covering artifacts and relics from more than 12 minority groups. The lay out and... Urumqi Old City Wulanbay The old city Wulanbay situated approximately 10 kilometers away from the south urban district of Urumqi. It is a big testimony for the ancient history of Urumqi. 7 Access to the Urumqi By Air Situated about 17km (about 10.6 miles) northwest of the city center, Urumqi International Airport (URC) is one of the busiest air hubs in China. The airport meets the 4E Standards Airport of the International Civil Aviation. Every week, over 700 flights leave here for 53 destination cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Harbin, Guangzhou and Qingdao, etc. as well as 14 foreign destinations including Tashkent, Novosibirsk, Moscow, Islamabad, Almaty and Bishkek. You can book flight tickets at most high-rated hotels in Urumqi. Airport Inquiring: (0991) Hongshan (Red Hill) Ticket Office: 62, Youhao Nan Lu Beimen Ticket Office: 2, Xinmin Lu The taxi is convenient for traveling between the airport and the downtown area. It takes about half an hour to downtown Urumqi, the cost is about 60 Yuan. Also public bus No. 51 (1 Yuan per person) can take passengers to the downtown area, it takes about one hour to downtown Urumqi. By Train Urumqi is linked by rail to six major Chinese cities, including Xian, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou and Lanzhou. Due to the great distances, we strongly advise you to take hard or soft sleeper berth. Train services also connect Urumqi with other main cities in Xinjiang, such as Korla, Aksu, Kuitun, and Liuyuan. The train station is in the southwest part of the city. It will cost you about 10 Yuan to take a taxi from the city center to the station. There are ticket offices situate in Huanghe Lu and No. 3 in Jianshe Lu. Remember to buy tickets at least three days in advance. By Bus Long-haul buses go to most cities in Xinjiang every day.
