1 Officers/Directors In memory of Tom Lewis, CdAAA VP I've been thinking about Tom, and our last visit at the NIC Aerospace Center Open House. I'd describe him as, "Tom Lewis, our jovial and disciplined presider over meetings of the Coeur d'alene Airport Association, flew west at one o'clock a.m. Thursday morning, April 17. His traditions will be carried on; meetings called precisely at 4:30 p.m. with a duration not exceeding one hour, and with a spirit of conviviality that carried on from before the meeting until well after." Charlie Branch, CdAAA President, Murdo Cameron, c Vice president, Tom Lewis, RIP Treasurer, Allen Peterson Secretary, Holly Forshee, acting Joan Lewis, Mike Gossett, Jim Thorpe, Dean Haagenson, Nina Eckberg, c Joan Genter, Mac McCormack, Allen Peterson,Newsletter Ed , c Gene Soper, AB c Phil Cummings, Airport advisor to the Cd'AAA Board, Cd A Airport Association c/o Treasurer P.O. Box 2124 Hayden, ID Calandar of Events Cd'AAA Board Meeting, 4:30 pm May 21, June 21, July 16, 2014, at the Miles Coffee Cafe, 167 W. 2 Items discussed at the April 16 Board Meeting The meeting was called to order by Gene Soper, Charlie Branch and Mike Zaidlicz at 4:30 p.m. Allen Peterson was excused due to flu. Mike presented photos of last weekend's transient Waco biplane, whose pilot and passenger were looking for a public restroom, and other facilities, and conversed with Mike while waiting for their taxi to arrive. The taxi driver did not know where the airport is located, so that took a while. Charlie saw this airplane pass over downtown Monday morning heading SE, while on voluntary crossing guard (or traffic director) duty at Sorensen Magnet School (9:30-10:10 a.m., during the early part of that shift). Mike also reported seeing a half-dozen people sitting in lawn chairs at the proposed visitor center site last weekend, watching airplanes on runway 06/24. In discussion, Gene noted that the county commissioners also favor this visitor center project, and we observe that probably because this project is less controversial than many they've been involved with, it costs but little, and it's their election year. When Allen recovers, Mike plans on a meeting with the Parks and Waterways Dept. (w/allen) to obtain answers to those persisting questions so that we can move forward on the project. The meeting adjourned at 4:47 p.m. by popular acclamation. CdAAA Meeting place Miles Coffee Company, 167 W. Miles Hayden, ID Welcome new or renewed members for 2014: Jon & Mary Hubof --- Airport security is everyone's responsibility The Cd'AAA would like to facilitate the hangar owners and renters in being pro active about preventing trouble at the airport. NOTICE This will be my last issue as CdAAA newsletter editor and I have enjoyed doing the newsletter since December of I will stay on as Treasurer and Charlie Branch has agreed to take over as newsletter editor, his first issue will probably be in June. Please support Charlie and submit any items of interest to him. Allen Peterson We encourage all hanger owners and renters to place the above Emergency Contact sign in a window visible from the street. This will provide a quick way to notify the hanger owner or renter if anything unusual is noted by airport personnel or other hanger owners. Signs can be obtained from Murdo Cameron, , or Mike Gossett, Page 2

4 Murdo Cameron with Mikhail and Irina Granov (L-R) 10 at NIC s Aerospace Center of Excellence Murdo introduced Holly Forshee and me, then left us to listen to Mikhail explain his new engine design, with his daughter Irina translating from the Russian. Mikhail designed a small and light, two-stroke, opposed cylinder engine that uses the opposite cylinder as the intake and exhaust valve with additional units bolting together with four bolts, like Lego blocks. This multi-fuel engine has no valves, and can be carbureted or fuel injected. A 24 lb. single-unit engine would produce 65 to 80 HP at 6000 rpm, while a 40 lb. double-unit engine could produce HP at 6000 rpm. Mikhail estimates this engine to cost approximately half as much as a Rotax, and ceramic construction could provide an even lighter and cooler engine. As a lawn mower or other small equipment engine, would be the way to start production as he s seeking investors. More interesting was when he started pulling out photos from his briefcase (Irina rolls her eyes), and she translates his story of flying in Kazakhstan, as he and his friends would hike all day to spend thirty minutes hang-gliding from a 10,000-foot mountain. Lots of photos and a couple of old magazines showing the gliders he and his friends built, sometimes adding small engines to discover the importance of weight-and-balance on control. One photo showed parachute training: strapped in a harness, traveling down a cable to practice landings beside the watchful eye of an instructor with a stock whip, hitting their legs until they learned the correct landing position. Mikhail explained, via Irina, that he made thirty jumps (and the Army paid fifty dollars each jump!) without injury. He pulled out design drawings of a number of a number of airplanes, including an ekranoplan, the Russian seaplane category that flies no higher than ground effect altitude (1/2 the wingspan above the surface), which is very efficient for hauling heavier loads with less power than would be needed to fly at higher altitude.
