More than 50 kilometres of interlinked on and off-road trails offer walkers and cyclists of all ages safe and enjoyable access to Albury s natural environment and places of interest. Most trails are flat, shared pathways that you can walk or cycle along with ease. One of the most popular trails is the Wagirra Trail, incorporating Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, which extends from the Union Bridge in South Albury through to the picturesque Horseshoe Lagoon in West Albury. This trail also links with Wodonga s network of pathways. The more adventurous can head to Nail Can Hill, to find many trails ideal for mountain biking and hiking. State and National mountain bike championship events are often held there and riders rate the challenging courses as among the best in Australia. As you navigate the trail network, you ll come across great spots to stop and rest, have a picnic or a coffee, or just enjoy the view. For families, ride the trails to Albury s riverside parks, explore the adventure playgrounds or, if the weather s warm, stop off at the Albury Swim Centre for a refreshing dip. Regardless of your age or level of fitness, Albury s trails are a must if you want to get out, get active and enjoy all that the city has to offer. 3 GLEN PAR GAP RD Wagirra Trail & Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk TO WONGA WETLANDS RIV ERINA HWY ROSEDALE PEMBERTON PADMAN DR BONNIE DOON J A CARANDA MOTT ST MONUMENT SACK V ILLE ST The Wagirra Trail links Horseshoe Lagoon with the South Albury Trail at the Union Bridge. A two metre wide shared pathway meanders through the riverside parks (Noreuil, Australia, and Hovell Tree), past the Adventure Playspace at Oddies Creek, Albury Swim Centre, through Padman Park and west of Kremur Street (3.2km) to Wonga Wetlands. There are many places to stop and picnic or just enjoy the tranquillity of the Murray River. The last section of the trail, from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands is sealed. KREMUR ST HOVELL S EB LA The Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk (commencing Kremur Street 5.3km) features a series of stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculptures lining the Wagirra Trail from Kremur Street to Wonga Wetlands. Eleven sculptures created by local Aboriginal artists have been installed along the five kilometres of trail. Each sculpture is accompanied by interepretive panels and videos available via mobile devices. This trail is sealed and almost entirely off the road but there are a number of road crossings, so take care to ensure the road is clear before you cross. The trail winds through Heathwood Park, Fredericks Park Regional Playground and the Albury Skate Bowl, leading you past the beautiful Albury Botanic Gardens and Albury Swim Centre, before joining the Wagirra Trail. The trail also connects to the Albury CBD where you can visit Albury s award winning LibraryMuseum or MAMA. It s a relatively flat and easy ride with a number of great places to stop. 5 RANGE RD West Albury Trail GAP R The West Albury Trail weaves through a number of parks in West Albury and links with the Wagirra Trail. TO WONGA WETLANDS RIV ERINA HWY ROSEDALE PEMBERTON PADMAN DR BONNIE DOON J A CARANDA MOTT ST MONUMENT It commences at Banksia Street and extends unsealed for approximately 500 metres between Haydon Park and Bonnie Doon Oval before crossing Pemberton Street. Attractions enroute include Bonnie Doon Reserve, the Haydon Park multipurpose sports courts and the West Albury Skate Park. The path continues off the road through Patricia Gould Reserve and links with a sealed path from Padman Drive, alongside Kremur Street. This 800 metre path links you to the Wagirra Trail. If you turn left, you will enjoy a 2.5 kilometre ride in to Noreuil Park or turn right toward Horseshoe Lagoon, about 2.5 kilometres down the trail. The trail is accessed from the Amatex Street pedestrian overpass just past the highway on the Albury Thurgoona Trail. An off-road path follows Macauley Street past Brown s Lagoon and then continues off the road along Nurigong Street from Olive to Kiewa Streets. An onroad lane then takes you to the Union Bridge, where the trail links with the Wagirra Trail near Oddies Creek Park. The trail commences off the road from the Albury Thurgoona Trail near the Borella Road bridge. An on-road section of the trail 500 metres long takes you along the Borella Road service lane, passing the Albury Base Hospital, a plant nursery and a homemaker shopping complex before intersecting with Mungabareena Road. From there, it s a short on-road ride to the Mungabareena reserve where you can enjoy a picnic beside the Murray River. This 6km trail links to the Albury-Thurgoona trail. EDERICKS REGIONAL PLAYGROUND GAN RD UNION RD WAUGH RD JELBART UNION RD CORRYS RD MITCHELL DR The trail crosses under the freeway at the Union Road underpass and over the freeway at Dean and Amatex Streets. You can also access the trail from Corry s Road, Fallon Street, North Street and Bridge Street. From the Albury Thurgoona Trail you can join other trails to link to Mungabareena Reserve, the riverside parks and Horseshoe Lagoon, making this a wonderful cycling or walking experience for people of all ages. 9 NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT CENTRE CHARLES STURT UNI TO LAKE HUME S (BOWNA & TABLE TOP RESERVE) OVAL Thurgoona Trail The Thurgoona Trail extends along Thurgoona Drive from the Albury Thurgoona Trail up to Woolshed Creek. There are also intersecting off-road paths along Table Top Road that allow for exploration of the area. DR The trail passes the Thurgoona Shopping Centre, Ernest Grant Oval and Skate Park and the Thurgoona Golf Club Resort. It connects Thurgoona walkers and cyclists with the Albury CBD and is a flat and easy trail for all ages. ERNEST GRANT GOLF CLUB Access to Charles Sturt University and several primary and secondary schools is via this trail. This 6.6km trail also links to the Albury-Thurgoona trail. 10 MUDGE CENTAUR RD < Very steep section PEARSALL ST LAVINGTON SPORTS GROUND Nail Can Hill / Ridge Trail GLENMORUS GARDENS 600m NORRIS OVAL BURROWS RD FR Nail Can Hill is part of the regional crown reserve, to the west of the city, and is an area of extensive undulating bushland. The area features a network of trails used for bushwalking, running and mountain bike riding. Nail Can Hill is also home to Albury s famous Nail Can Hill Run a popular 11.3 kilometre event that has been held in May each year since As the terrain is very steep in places, the trail is not recommended for beginners. RANGE RD LO To enjoy your time exploring Nail Can Hill, be sure to stay on the Ridge Trail as shown on the map. Many more trails exist as part of the Rural Fire Service trail network, but these are unsuitable for bike riding. GLEN RY This trail has many spectacular views however as the area is a haven for some of the region s rare flora and fauna, please stay on the main trail. 11 Shared path to Wagirra/Yindyamarra Trail Wonga Wetlands Trail Walking trails only A unique environmental experience exists downstream from Albury along the floodplain of the Murray River the Wonga Wetlands. About 3 kilometres of walking paths allows visitors to experience these beautiful wetlands. The wetlands are home to around 150 species of birds, which can be seen throughout the year in their natural habitat. You can also see ancient river red gums and a traditional Wiradjuri campsite. Wonga Wetlands is located on the Riverina Highway, 6 kilometres west of Albury. A self-guided tour map is available from the car park area and there are facilities to safely secure your bike. 12 Other Area Trails Hume and Hovell Track The Hume and Hovell Trail follows the footsteps of famous explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell on their expedition to Port Phillip in Wodonga Pathways The Wagirra Trail links with Wodonga s vast network of pathways in Victoria. Choose picturesque, relaxing circuits or more challenging courses to get the heart rate up. For further information, visit The last section of this 440 kilometre track heads south from Table Top through Albury to the Murray River. Further information on this track can be obtained from the New South Wales Land and Property Management Authority at High Country Rail Trail This 35 kilometre trail links Wodonga and Old Tallangatta, following the historic railway line alongside Lake Hume. Beautiful views, many points of interest and plenty of rest areas and picnic spots can be found along the way. For a trail map and further information visit TRAILS 2

13 Cycle Safety Tips Remember: Bicycles are vehicles by law, with equal rights to share the road. Cyclists are required to obey the same road rules that drivers of vehicles obey, and penalties apply. Cyclists can use a whole lane and ride two abreast provided they are not more than 1.5 metres apart. Cyclists must correctly wear an Australian Standards approved bicycle helmet. Be safe, be seen: wear bright-coloured clothing when cycling. Cyclists must give way to pedestrians crossing the road and they must walk bikes across pedestrian crossings. Cyclists must not be towed by another vehicle. At night, cyclists must display a bright white light on the front of the bike and a bright red light and red reflector on the rear of the bike. Your bicycle must have at least one working brake and be fitted with a suitable warning device. It is an offence to ride with no hands or with feet off the pedals. Motorists must give cyclists at least one metre of room when overtaking. Shared Paths Pedestrians / Motorised Wheelchair Users: Watch out cyclists, roller-bladers and skateboarders share the path. Keep left be careful not to block the track. Walk on the left side except where otherwise indicated. Hold hands keep children under 10 years of age away from traffic. Control dogs keep them on a short lead. Cyclists: Slow down and take care everyone uses shared pathways, including children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Keep left except when overtaking slower traffic. Use your bell warn pedestrians that you are approaching. Give them plenty of room.
