6 Pilot/General Aviation Trends The average age of the pilot population continues to increase. Less disposable income after retirement and more difficulty retaining medical certificates leads to less flight activity. Historically, pilot training occurred at flight schools located on general aviation airports. Due to costs, more people now get training as part of college degree programs eligible for financial aid. Hours flown by piston aircraft since the 2008 recession have declined 30%. Fortunately, that has been offset by growth in turbine aircraft activities, but growth forecasts remain low. Pilot shortage
