2 Tributes to Brian Fields Southern Pacific Division President J Keeley announced in the May 2013 Southern Pacific Daylighter that Brian Fields passed away May 4, 2013:...Brian was an active member of TTOS serving fellow members in a variety of ways: President of Southern Pacific Division, President of TTOS National, co-chairman of the 2000 Long Beach (Queen Mary) convention, chairman of the 2006 Costa Mesa convention, and volunteer at many other train shows. He also enjoyed operating layouts as a member of the Orange County Tinplate Trackers, monthly meet operator of our small layouts, and had the benefit of a home layout in a spare bedroom. Brian was always ready for a road trip and the lore of the chase chasing real trains across Southern California. As a profession, Brian repaired BMW cars and was crew chief for Mazdatrix Racing, rebuilding motors, transmissions, and making repairs. There wasn t a race he didn t like to watch. As he often said, Toy trains is a hobby, but racing is a passion.. John D. Bentley, TTOS #2, shared his remembrance of Brian Fields in the July 2013 Southern Pacific Daylighter: So many train collector friends were stunned to hear the news of the passing of Brian Fields, who was our beloved National Past President. It was tough to ever see Brian without his great smile and his positive attitude as he made the rounds going from table to table to say hello to all the members at all our train meetings. He made a great leader as our President, having the mindset, attending all the many meetings and commercial train shows to promote and move TTOS, our train association, forward at all times. When I first met Brian, I wasn t greeted with a handshake, but a friendly hug. For me, it set the tone of who Brian was as a friend to all. He gave me the name of Johnny O Two for being the second member of the club. His passion for the hobby was so out front of everything he did. His biggest thing was to promote the hobby to children. He began to build modular layouts and then transported these to many outside train and hobby shows to not only talk about our club, but to show off the wonderful world of toy trains to families, and of course, the kids. He told me, John, their smiles make it all so important that I m doing the right thing. Then he stepped up to build a huge, portable layout that had room to park a versatile amount of engines to run around the outside tracks. To see Brian stand there running all those trains and see the horde of families watching all of this had Brian in his true environment. He passed out information on TTOS which brought many new members into the clubs. His sense of humor was his calling card. Some examples: John, who do you think is more handsome, me or you? Nope he would say, the right answer is me, I wish you wouldn t always be wrong. Another: Do you think running the choo-choo is cheaper than dating? (John) I don t know Brian. Brian: Well it is, I use a little electricity to run the train, but dating costs gas for your car and dinner to feed your date, add it up. Brian would always have zingers like: I don t like board meetings, someone is always unhappy and complaining...i just want to smack them just to see their surprise look and then ask them, give me a smile so I know you love trains. Another: A man asked Brian, What would happen if you wet your fingers and touched all the terminals on the transformer? Brian: Don t do it dude, it melted the elastic off my shorts. Brian worked on street rods and had a passion for racing. He was one very talented guy, yet always remained humble and thankful towards his friends and collector buddies. I know our Lord will have a special place for Brian to oversee. It will have something to do with entertaining small children and older folks who need to laugh and have a good time. Brian was my close friend and I spent some time alone just crying at my desk with the light off. I thought a lot about him and me, and the fact he told me that Heaven had to have trains to run. Then he thought for a moment, and added, If they don t, why go. Bless you, Brian, I already miss you. Editor s note: Brian Fields rarely missed coming with the Orange Country Tinplate Trackers to our Cal-Stewart Fall meets to smilingly share his enthusiasm for running toy trains. He will indeed be missed by Southwestern Division members as well. 2
3 Tribute to Vincent Vince Garguilo Long time Southwestern Division member Vincent Vince Garguilo, with his family at his side, passed away peacefully on May 31st at his home in Glendale, ending his battle with recurring cancer. A native of New York of Italian heritage, Vince worked in California as an electrician in the film industry and had his own electrical company. He also offered auction services. Vince s love of toy trains brought him to Southwestern Division where besides acquiring trains for his own collection, he shared his talent as an auctioneer at monthly meets as well as Cal-Stewart fall meets for a number of years. He was also a member of TCA Western Division and assisted at TCA auctions. His friendly personality, enthusiasm and great sense of humor touched everyone he met. He really enjoyed helping members and visitors at the monthly auctions and at the Cal-Stewart fall meet auctions. A celebration of life for Vince was held on Saturday, July 13th at the Verdugo Hills Dad s Clubhouse in Glendale. Predeceased by his wife Faye, he is survived by his son and two daughters and a grandson. Vince will be missed by Southwestern Division members and friends. Vince in action at the Monthly Meet Auction of March 2010 Editor s Note: the lateness of this issue of Southwestern Limited is partly due to my wife s illness and her continuing recovery. Thank you for your patience. The next Limited will be out shortly.
