No sooner do I have a newsletter done and it s time to get the next one ready. Very busy month coming up with lots of fabulous rides so enjoy yourselves and enjoy the read and don t forget to send me everything and anything to put into this newsletter. Selfies, funny photos, jokes, interesting stories all very welcome. I do apologise to those who have sent me information for this edition but due to size limitations I have been quite restricted this month and had to make some changes to be able to fit as much information in as possible. 3 Personality Profile Brian Mathieson # When & where did you first start getting into motorbikes? As a child my family always rode motorbikes. I followed the lead of my older brothers riding junior then senior motorcross. Living in a country town, bikes were a big part of our lives. 2. Tell us about your first real bike on the road. My first road bike was a XLR 600 road/trail bike. 3. How long have you been riding? Since I was about 5 years old on mini bikes, 80cc, 100cc, 125cc. 4. What has been your favourite riding experience? 2013 Blackdog ride from Bridgetown to Bunbury WA. More than 400 bikes riding for a great cause. 5. First bike that you dropped or pranged? Pranged many bikes riding motorcross over the years and ALMOST dropped my 2009 Goldwing but held the 500kg from hitting the ground. Had shoulder surgery 6weeks later. 6. Strangest experience on a bike? Riding through the bush as a teenager with my girlfriend on the back and going against her parents orders I hit a jump causing her to fall off and roll down the road...oops! 7. What is the most important lesson riding has taught you? Anticipate, anticipate, anticipate. Always expect the unexpected when riding as other road users can do some wonderful things! 8. Tell us about your last bike or current bike? Current bike is a 2009 Honda Goldwing or my 3rd born child as referred to by my wife. 9. When were you introduced to the Ulysses Club? Always been interested in becoming a member but was not of age. Now that I have reached the magic age of 40 and recently moved to Tassie from WA I decided to become a member. During Blackdog ride discussions with Betty from the Hobart branch, she gave me the Tamar Tourer details to become a member. 10. What is it you like most about riding with Tamar Tourers? Being new to Tasmania it is a great way to meet new people with similar interests and to explore this beautiful state. 11. Which AGM s have you attended? Yet to attend an AGM but have offered my skills as a Health and Safety Professional to the 2016 AGM team arranging the event in Launceston. 12. Finally, could you offer a gem of advice to fellow Ulyssians? Be nice to your children as they will choose your retirement home!! Ulysses Inc. Ross Weekend - 28 th, 29 th, 30 th November Come one and all and enjoy a leisurely weekend mixing with fellow Ulyssians from all over Tasmania in the historic township of Ross. From past experience most choose to leave the two wheeler at home, load up the 4WD/car/Camper/slide-on/caravan/5 th wheeler/camper trailer etc, book accommodation and set off for a weekend of camaraderie with fellow Ulyssians. Others bring the bike while some come for just a day. Most enjoy at least one meal at the Man O Ross while others enjoy brekkie at one of the bakeries. 4 Launceston 2016 AGM Event Update October months to go and counting. The building of our website is starting to get back on track now. Natcom has appointed 2 people to work on AGM Event websites and Riding On magazines. They are not quite up to speed yet but with a little more training it will all happen. The familiarisation trip on the Spirit of Tasmania I mentioned last month is now confirmed and Ulysses Members from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the A.C.T. will arrive here late in November this year to visit our area and site. Exact details of the trip are still to be finalised and I ll let you know next newsletter AGM EVENT POSITIONS FILLED Edwin Chugg will work as our Pick Up Trailer Coordinator before, during and after the Event. Hopefully we don t have to pick up many broken bikes while they are visiting us. John Frearson will take on the role as Senior Storeman, controlling the safe storage and the correct allocation of consumables, signage, and all other machinery and materials used throughout the week as well as prior and post the Event. Maryann Hart has accepted the role as Meetings Coordinator. She bears responsibility for ensuring that the two primary Ulysses Club meetings (The Extended Natcom Meeting & The Annual General Meeting) during AGM Event week are well organised and executed in line with club policies and procedures. Robin Smith has accepted the position as Procurement and Purchasing Coordinator. Robin is responsible for ensuring that all goods & equipment are costed, sourced, accounted for and returned in a timely fashion. Many thanks to all as above for volunteering your services. All helpers are much appreciated. ENTERTAINMENT COORDINATOR POSITIONS VACANT A brief description: Entertainment should be provided throughout the Event in various forms. Including anything from talent quests, recorded music, buskers or big bands. This Coordinator will bring their own ideas forward and liaise with the event committee to decide on the type of music & entertainment required for various times and venues around the event site and complete an entertainment program. RAFFLES & PRIZES COORDINATOR A brief description: The Raffles & Prizes Coordinator holds two main areas of responsibility; raising cash revenue to help off-set event expenses, and sourcing give-away prizes for member competitions. All funds raised from event raffles contribute toward the Event s consolidated revenue, but some may be shared with partnering companies via National Sponsorship arrangements. Anyone interested in these important areas should make contact with me now and I can hopefully answer anything you need to know about them. Continued next page.. 5 Launceston 2016 AGM Event Update October months to go and counting. Wodonga AGM Event March 2015 The Tamar Tourers Branch will be staging a very big 2016 AGM Event display at the Wodonga Trade Hall next year. We have 3 3m x 3m sites booked and joining us on these sites will be the Spirit of Tasmania and the Launceston Travel and Information Centre. We are receiving good support from both companies. Very shortly we will be calling for volunteers to help us on our 2016 display stand and a roster will be set up in accordance with your available times. Please make yourself available for at least a couple of hours in Wodonga. No new freebie t-shirts are available this year, so when working on our display stand, please wear your shirt from last year, a Tamar Tourers shirt, or at least a Ulysses shirt. If you weren t at Alice, you will see for yourself how excited everyone is about coming to Tassie in If there are any members who do not have any set travel plans yet, or still undecided about going to the Event in Wodonga and might like to ride in a small group, please get in touch with me now. I know of a couple of Members who are interested and it would be good if all could travel together. 6 Long Ride Tasmania 2014 October 25 th and 26 th Ulysses Members do not need to be reminded of the consequences of Prostate Cancer and the need for further research into this deadly disease History: For the past six years, Tamar Tourers and North West Coast members of Ulysses have combined for a weekend of riding the LONG RIDE. Those of us who have undertaken the round Tasmania trip have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the ride, the company and the companionship. Yes, the weather has been challenging (!!), but it s still been fun! The Plan: This year, we are going to do the trip in reverse. The trip will start at Maccas Burnie at 8 am sharp, heading for South Launceston Maccas to meet the Tamar Tourers. At 10 am we go via Scottsdale to St Helens for lunch. From there it s Bicheno, Swansea, and Orford for a break, then down to Brighton and into our digs for the night at New Norfolk. Next morning, it s over to Bothwell and onto the Midlands Highway, then north to Campbell Town, where we will join with other Tasmanian Ulyssians for the annual Pink Ribbon Bar-B-Q. The North Westerners will head for home from there. Accommodation: As usual, Tim Last at the New Norfolk Junction Motel will be providing rooms for us at $80! That s a Ulysses special and his way of assisting the ride. He will also put on a magnificent buffet for us. Please phone him now to book your room; mention the Tasmanian Ulysses Long Ride. His phone number is Don t leave it till the last minute! Donation: Your Donation to the Prostate Foundation is $20 PER BIKE. But, try raising some sponsorship for yourself. Wouldn t it be great if we could each raise a $50 or so? Receipts will be available for all funds raised by you so get a name and address from your sponsors! Ride Co-Ordinator on the Coast is Peter Carne with Tony Benneworth the RC in Launceston. Tony Benneworth Peter Carne Guest Speakers who would you like to see and listen to? The committee has decided to try a wide range of guest speakers at our Thursday Dinner Meetings in The intent is twofold. One, to inform our members on a multitude of topics and secondly to attract new members into our Ulysses family at Tamar Tourers. The committee seeks your ideas and opinions on guest speaker prospects for As we will only have six Dinner Meetings in 2015 we wish to come up with a list of six guest speakers who will entertain and inform us. Could you please send in your suggestions to John or Martin either by , text message or post at your earliest convenience. Adding details such as Name, Contact details, area of expertise, a brief history etc will help us immensely in the selection process.
