With its dramatic setting on the peninsula protected by rocky cliffs and the sea below, this is a must see on a visit to Mull and a great place to spend a half day or more leisurely full day out. The archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, lies in the Atlantic Ocean, 41 miles west of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. Its islands, with their exceptional cliffs and sea stacs, are rich in wildlife and form the most important seabird breeding station in north-west Europe. The season for puffins (usually end of April to early August) and for gannets (April to October). The evacuation of the local population in 1930 brought to a close an extraordinary story of survival. Your trip begins at Uig Pier on Skye for the journey of 85 miles to St Kilda, around four hours each way. You ll have approximately four hours on the main island of St Kilda plus cruise from Hirta to Boreray and Sea Stacs Lee and An Armin which are located around three miles to the north of Hirta before returning to Uig. Standing on a rocky outcrop in an idyllic loch side setting, Dunvegan is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home and stronghold of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. In the castle there are displays of fine oil paintings, antique furniture, and other clan treasures including Jacobite relics and the famous Fairy Flag, a legendary and ancient battle banner said to have amazing powers. Other treasures include the Dunvegan Cup, dating back to the Middle Ages. Parts of the castle date to the 9th century. Enjoy a tour of this beautiful, important and impressive castle. Make sure you allow time to explore and enjoy the beautiful formal gardens including the elegant walled garden and the water garden, with gentle walking trails, woodland glades, waterfalls and streams leading to the sea. A must do when at the castle is a boat trip (bookable when visiting) to see the local seal colony.
