3 From the Editors Desk By Heidi Prindiville Welcome to the November Issue of Cinders and Soot. It is a very light issue this month with no other submissions received and with hubby being away for work most of the month not even he could contribute anything about the month. Reminder to all that have RSVP d for the Christmas Party that it is on the 8 th as per the calendar and the invite from last issue, see you all there. Just a reminder to all that the date for submissions is in the calendar. Secretaries Scribblings By Les Smith Another very good month with strong patronage particularly after the City of Canning Muddy Hands Day. The day almost failed with Wilson Park losing power late on the Friday afternoon. Since then we had a break-in to the Ticket Box that the City has repaired but we did lose some signalling items. The new electric B-b-q is in place at Niana on its dedicated slab. This does improve the appearance and should lessen our work-load no more gas bottles, finding matches.. Our new old member Robin Greeney is back with a gusto and has now completed the new seating in the Green-Set with some adjustments to the heights for uniformity and centre of gravity reasons. He has purchased a steamer. The Green-Set will be now much lighter to haul We also notice that John Wilson has put in a re-newal of membership. Welcome back mate!. Stork (aka Keith Price) has been busy painting the new Niana ticket box. With the old box now dismantled there is now room to do some work for a viewing area. Just as busy has been the A-team out at Wilson where the gap between tracks 2 & 3 has been levelled-up to sleeper height with road-base supplied by the City. The appearance is great along with improved passenger safety. The Committee has some concern over tool safety and it is reiterated that it is YOU as an operator of an item to take responsibility for you own (and others) safety. Hand held grinders / cutters have a poor safety record from wrongly applied cutting blades, no safety guards to kick back etc and so, take advice re operation from an experienced trades-person. We look forward to our Christmas function on Saturday 8th December and we have a Father Xmas albeit some padding required! 3

4 Scout Ceremony On the 24 th of October there was a ceremony carried out by the Canning Sea Scouts with participation from several of our members, photos from the front cover and below from the evening and a letter from the scouts thanking CMR for the donation that has allowed them to purchase camping equipment. Thanks to Roger and all his helpers for putting on a great show for the scouts. 4

7 Saturdays Efforts by Les Smith New Old member Robin Greeney has been put straight to work installing and adjusting seat heights in our road running re-painted Green Set along with noise deadening matting. Not the best shot of Rob, but the Green-Set looks beaut. We also have Roger getting down and dirty with advice from Rod Bradley. Rod is not photo-genic, but we did get a part of his arm in as he gestulates and gives instructions..not that Roger would take much notice! It is these efforts that keep the Club in great shape. 7

11 2018 Sandgropers by Craig Belcher A great weekend had in Bunbury this year for the annual Sandgropers event, my engine Balbarrup had more running in the one day so far than it has since gaining it s boiler ticket earlier this year. 13 UHF Radio s for use at the club By Craig Belcher With my role at work, I am fortunate to be able to obtain favourable pricing on certain items through my distributors. One of the items I have been looking of late is UHF Handheld radios, as currently used by the club on running days (and other times). I am looking at the possibility of organizing a once off bulk purchase on the below two radio packages for members who may want them. Costing is indicative only, as it will vary a little depending on how many are ordered, i.e. the more ordered the cheaper it will become GME TX6160 $ GME TX6160TP (twin pack) $ Should anyone come across better pricing FOR THE SAME ITEMS, I would be interested to know during this process as I may be able to use that to get pricing reduced further. 14 The Motorised Hand Pump Trolley By Les Smith There has been a comment or two made re the vehicle depicted below that was designed and built for a grand-mother and her young grandsons. Safety of operation was the main goal with some features thrown in for demonstration. Essentially it is a long wheel-base two axle-wagon with propulsion added. The AALS currently does not allow public passenger carrying in two-axle wagons. This will be debated at the next Convention. Modern two-axle wagons / rail buses can travel at quite high speed and in fact a demonstrator wagon chalked-up a million kms in 4years running between Adelaide and Perth unrestricted in higher speed freight service. It had been tested to 147km/hr! (the test locomotive would not go any faster) The trolley has a swing link suspension and thus is like a long wheel-base passenger bogie. The Italians have re-used this old technology for their very hi-speed Pendilino trains which are regarded as about the best in the world. Specifically designed bed-base type springs are used for the swing-links for simplicity. The hanger bars are set to allow a small amount of longitudinal movement of the axle-boxes between what was once the horn guides. This allows for passive or forced steering of the wheel-sets for radial curve action. (the steering linkage was removed as the chain drives annulled such when propelling) An electric bike motor was added to propel up the Fern Road gradient and to allow the grand-mother a little rest. Set in forward gear for pump action the trolley will not roll backwards down a gradient. A standing start test has been made on the ruling Fern Road gradient with-out any stress. By drive sprocket selection, the top speed is 6km/hr and so grand-children should not come to any harm. There will not be any attempt to exceed the 20km/hr AALS speed limit! 14
