Class P2 LNER. The outfit that built Tornado are considering building a P that would be numbered 2007 which is the next in order. If you are still confused what a P2 is, think Cock of the North, Mons Meg, Earl Marshal, Lord President,. There were 6 locos built in to service the LNER route in Scotland to Aberdeen. They had their teething problems which they have since realized what it was but not before they were re-wheeled to Pacifics when WW2 broke out. GWR. Are in the process of celebrating 175 years. Last months Poser Q1. The final train on the Foxton Branch left The Square Palmerston North. Q2. I knew this was a tough one, only philatelists would cotton on to this one. It was a first day cover from the Royal Mail on famous trains and all based on paintings by the Mouse man Terence Cuneo. This Months Posers. What structure opened in 1890 by the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) Clue The painting of same never ends! In what month and Year was the Golden Spike placed on the Transcontinental route east to West across USA? What date was the first passenger service made. By What means was the service from Council Bluff to Omaha on that route.? Your editor will accept any article. Please submit as a WORD document. Hear that Lonesome Whistle Blow Author Dee Brown Your Editor. I m in the process of reading this book, it is about Railroads in the West and the thrust to link the two oceans Atlantic and Pacific. It is how the Railway Barons fleeced everyone including the US government and lining their own pockets. Very interesting reading and you will be gobsmacked with the goings on. The principle railroads were the Union Pacific and Central Pacific.
4 Page 3 What is it? This article was kindly supplied by Robbie Robinson with input from a UK friend of his. I received this question from a long standing friend in the U.K. Whilst on a countryside walk last month my friend Peter saw this train leaving Market Bosworth station, Leicestershire. Market Bosworth is on the Shackerstone Line, which is one of Britain s privately run Heritage Railways. This railway is sometimes referred to as The Bosworth Line or Battlefield Line after the famous Battle of Bosworth Fields. This was the final battle in the War of the Roses where The Duke of Lancaster beat The Duke of York to take possession of the Crown of England and rule the country. A time well before railways etc. Anyway Peter called in at the station and waited for the train to return and take some more photos. There was a steam special on, and Edward Thomson s L.N.E.R. class B No Mayflower was the motive power of the day. It was the Observation coach at the rear of the train that intrigued him, as Peter had not seen anything like it before. Hence the question What is it? Between 1935 and 1937 the L.N.E.R. built 6 observation coaches. 2 for the Silver Jubilee, 2 for the West Riding Limited and 2 for the Coronation trains. Streamlined in shape to complement the L.N.E.R. Class A4 Pacific locomotive in front they soon became known, by the enthusiasts of the day, as Beaver Tails. All the coaches ran on their respective trains on a daily basis until 1940, when they went into storage for the duration of the war. In 1948 under the newly formed British Railways the Coronation Observation Cars No s E1719E and E1729E re-entered service being only used occasionally on the West Highland Line in Scotland until In 1959 both coaches were rebuilt with a more angular observation end to aid better viewing. Photo by Peter White From then the coaches remained in regular service on the West Highland route until the end of the summer season of Sadly all the other 4 observation coaches had been scrapped by In storage until 1969 the historical significance of the observation cars were recognised when the Lochty Private Railway bought E1719E for preservation, and owning it until The Gresley Society acquiring E1729E before putting it into long term storage at Carnforth. E1719E was purchased by a member of the Railway Vehicle Preservations Ltd. at Loughborough, and stored for a number of years. After successful appeals and donations the renovation of E1719E is complete and as can be seen by the photographs. Of interest and according to the R.V.P. web site the second coach E1729E has been purchased and earmarked for a rebuild back to its original 1938 condition. Now that will be a sight to see. As modellers it s nice to see the preservation and restoration of the historic railway items in the 12 inches to the foot scale. No matter what we collectively, or as individuals, model, it s the hard labour and time given by the enthusiasts, being it in British, American or New Zealand Railways, that give us a visual 3 dimensional image from which to make our models. Take for instance a simple fire bucket filled with sand or water hanging on a bracket. What size is it in length? How round is it at the top and bottom? How long is the handle? What colour is it on the inside and the outside? Are there any markings on it like FIRE, to tell us what it is used for? How big are the letters? And where are they positioned on the bucket? Without an enthusiast restoring a real fire bucket that we can measure and see what colour it s painted, we as modellers have only our memories and guess work to make one in our chosen scale. Today is the day of the electric driven train. Diesels are being phased out on most of the world s railways. Yes even India and China are in the process of going electric. So who can remember the steam locomotives of last century and before, and for those that can, could we model one to scale. Are our memories accurate enough to even make a scale model of a simple FIRE bucket? With that in mind I say Thank You to all the 12 inches to the foot enthusiasts throughout the world for your great work, for allowing us modellers to enjoy our hobby and broaden our knowledge of railways. A 4mm. Kit of the 1937 Coronation beaver tail coach is produced by Mailcoach and can be purchased from Cooper-Craft Ltd. U.K.

After reading the book (q.v.) the gangs building the Transcontinental in USA were so pushed that the track was not unlike what you see below. In the 1860 s people running could overtake the train which had basically creep its way to avoid being derailed. Photo supplied by Robbie Robinson. Electronic for Points Glyn Cooper Glyn Cooper is an old acquaintance of mine, who enjoys messing around with the electronic side of model trains. The article below has been tested out with layouts in Auckland with many satisfied modellers. Glyn used to work with Triang in Auckland.. This maybe of interest to club members and I will post the originals on the Club Notice Board.

9 This Month s Laugh. Page 8. King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the Euphrates, the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate, he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for a loan. Croesus said, "I'll give you 100,000 dinar for it." "But I paid a million dinar for it," the King protested. "Don't you know who I am? I am the king!" Croesus replied, "When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no difference who you are." Parting Shot I guess since as it is the 175 th anniversary of Going When Ready we had better end with a King at speed. An old poster copy supplied by John Bracey. Gordon Yorkie Walker Your Scribe.
