2 A word from Brian Dear Collector, Firstly I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope you all had a good Christmas. My plan is to have spent New Year s Eve in Benidorm, which I am sure will mean a good story for the next letter, whether I will be able to tell it is another question. After months of secrecy it is nice to be able to show you some of the lovely covers we have planned for this year. The Windsor cover looks great and of course the Machin 50th Anniversary will be very big in the stamp world, we already have our thinking hats on to try and do some specials. I am also looking forward to the new Postal Museum opening and a chance to ride on the underground mail train. During December we bought in two great collections, one of RAF covers and the other rare FDC, so these should start to appear in the next magazine. With this one we have used the last few pages to try and cram in as much stock as we can by doing just lists, let us know what you think. We have also experimented by offering early covers by cover type and have started with the GPO covers from 1960s these can be found on pages Also make sure you have a look at the new space covers, you probably won t see these again. 18 MOMENTS IN HISTORY WORLD WAR TWO During World War Two Captain Fluegel produced a series of covers in the United Sates marking significant moments during the war. The quality of these covers are amazing given the period in which they were produced in and were far ahead of covers in the UK at this time. Fluegel managed to get his covers postmarked on key dates, giving you a chance to have truly historic cover in your collection. D-Day - 6th June 1944 The Normandy Landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, and better known as D-Day, was the Allied invasion of Normandy. It was largest the seaborne invasion in history and marked the beginning of the liberation of Nazi-occupied northwestern Europe. The invasion planning began in early in 1943 and involved not just a huge military buildup but an elaborate military deception to deceive the Germans over the timing and location of the invasion force. The Normandy coast was separated into five zones; Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. Despite the failure to achieve any of the original first day goals the operation did establish a foothold through which further troops and resources could flow. German casualties on D-Day are estimated at 4,000 to 9,000, whilst Allied casualties were at least 10,000. FL SPECIAL OFFER 80 Unsigned. Want to spread the payments on these amazing covers? Final Raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima 14th March 1945 One of the most iconic photos of the Second World War is of the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima. Taken by Joe Rosenthal it shows six US Marines raising a flag at the peak of Mount Suribachi, the highest point on the island. Iwo Jima was a strategically important military target despite being only 8 square miles in size, and is part of chain of Volcanic Islands which lye 750 miles south of Tokyo. The photograph was originally published in newspapers on February 25th It captured the minds of millions and Americans and generated huge publicity and funds for the war effort. It has been reprinted in thousands of different publications since, ensuring its place as the defining image of America s war effort. Three of the Marines in the photograph; Sergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousley, were killed within a few days of the photo being taken. The remaining three; Corporals Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and Harold Schultz, all survived the conflict. /family /magazines 18 WARREN HOUSE, SHEARWAY ROAD, FOLKESTONE, KENT CT19 4BF CL181 TEL FAX betty@buckinghamcovers.com

19 Dropping of the Atomic Bomb 6th August 1945 The United States, with the consent of the United Kingdom, dropped nuclear weapons on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 6th and 9th August respectively; in an act which is still fiercely debated to this day. The bombings killed at least 129,000 people, with further health effects felt for decades. The bombings occurred after the refusal of Japan to follow Germany s acceptance of unconditional surrender, and after the Allies preparation for the invasion of the Japanese mainland, codenamed Operation Downfall, predicted the cost to the US alone of least half a million fatalities. On August 15th, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender. VJ - Day 2nd September 1945 SPECIAL OFFER 175 FL per month for 5 months Victory over Japan Day, or V-J Day, marks the day Japan surrendered and thus bringing World War Two to an end. The Japanese announced their surrender on August 15th but did not sign the official documents of surrender until the 2nd September The formal surrender ceremony which included the signing of the documents, occurred in Tokyo Bay, aboard the USS Missouri. The document was signed on behalf of America by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, and for the United Kingdom by Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser. PVC in particular can be lethal to your covers and if you have old PVC pages in albums the leaves should be replaced. At 20 post free it s really a bargain! 26 BENHAM ENGRAVED SERIES We are still working on our full listing of this first series produced by Cath and Tony, and thanks to everyone who has sent in their list of specials to add to it. Recently I have had a couple of rarer postmarks in so I thought this called for a special feature. This set was issued on the 3rd January 1973 to mark Britain joining the EEC, what better way to mark this than to post the covers on the ferry on the way to Europe, though I am not sure early January is the ideal time for a day trip. The only way you can officially get British stamps postmarked abroad is if they are posted on board a ship, then they can be postmarked when they land. BE07A 75 Cover posted on MV Horsa on the Folkestone - Calais leg, so when it arrived in France it could have the Calais Maritime CDS postmark added. BE07B 75 Posted on the Calais - Folkestone leg, so has the Folkestone FDI postmark. So whichever way you voted 43 years later buy the historic pair for 125 BE13C 75 3rd September 1975 Inter Parliamentary Union Conference, cancelled with a large Evesham CDS postmark. Better known as a connected postmark for the 1965 Parliament issue (Simon De Montfort was killed at the Battle of Evesham), from the address we can guess this cover was done by Tony s co-editor on the FDC catalogue Bernard Townsend. BE19G 50 10th July 1974 Great Britons, set of four covers, each with a different illustrated and a different connected postmark. This is the way many people collected at the time. 34 space shuttle disasters space shuttle challenger: sts-51-l On January 28th 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of all seven crew members. The disaster was caused by an o-ring seal on one of its rocket boosters failing at liftoff. This allowed burning gas to escape and reach an external fuel tank, causing the separation of the rocket booster and structural failure of the fuel tank. It was later discovered that the o-ring was not designed to fly in the cold conditions which were present on the launch day. The disaster resulted in a 32-month halt of the shuttle program and the subsequent Rogers Commission found NASA managers had known about the fatal flaw in the o-ring, and disregarded warnings about the dangers of launching in such low temperatures. 35 space shuttle columbia: sts-107 On February 1st 2003 the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it re-entered Earth s atmosphere, killing all seven crew members. During the missions launch a piece of foam insulation broke off an external tank and impacted the left wing. When Columbia re-entered the atmosphere the damage allowed atmospheric gases to breach wing structure, resulting in its destruction and that of the entire shuttle. 43 the queen s prime ministers In the six decades since Queen Elizabeth II s Accession in 1952 Her Majesty has seen 13 different prime ministers occupy Downing Street. We are pleased to be able to offer the signatures of all 13 from Winston Churchill to Theresa May. WINSTON CHURCHILL Churchill is ranked consistently as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th Century and his inspirational oratory powers combined with his refusal to surrender to Nazi Germany helped inspire the British populace through the bleak early days of the war. His second term as Prime Minister from October 1951 to April 1955 presided over a massive expansion of housing to help deal with the post-war shortage, but it was foreign affairs that still dominated Churchill s tenure as he refused to accept dwindling British power. PM042CD per month for 5 months Winston Churchill signed typed letter written from Downing Street on 20th November 1951 to Alderman Donald Forbes thanking him for his help during the General Election. SIR ANTONY EDEN Eden succeeded Churchill as Conservative Prime Minister from 1955 to Eden s government recorded the lowest unemployment figures ever since the end of the war at just over 215,000. However, his time in office was overshadowed by the Suez Crisis and the refusal by the US to support a military response which severely hampered Eden s authority. This key moment in post war foreign affairs highlighted Britain s declining influence and power on the word stage. PM044J 300 Anthony Eden signed 1952 USA United Nations FDC HAROLD MACMILLAN Macmillan or Supermac was Conservative Prime Minister from 1957 to He pursued Keynesian economics which was credited with rising living standards, low unemployment, and steady growth, leading to him in 1957 to declare Britain had never had it so good. However, his final years were affected by the Profumo affair and other scandals. On the world stage he rebuilt relations with the US after Suez and strengthened the UK nuclear arsenal with the purchase of Polaris whilst helping to ratify the Nuclear Test Ban with the US and USSR. Harold MacMillan signed 1973 Parliament FDC PM045D 300 CL181 SIR ALEC DOUGLAS HOME Douglas-Home was Conservative Prime Minister from 1963 to 1964 and his time in office lasted only 354 days, the second shortest of the 20th century. Home s government was hampered as the fallout over the scandals that beset Macmillan continued. He is best remembered for his foreign policy and as a close ally of Kennedy he staunchly supported the US throughout the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. PM046A 75 Lord Home signed 50th Anniversary of the Declaration of War, at the time he was Private Secretary to the Prime Minister 43 Neville Chamberlain.

44 the queen s prime ministers HAROLD WILSON Wilson was Labour Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to Wilson s first term witnessed low unemployment and steady economic growth. He returned to power in 1974 and oversaw the liberalisation of divorce, homosexuality, immigration, and abortion, and abolished capital punishment. In response to the Northern Ireland Troubles, Wilson authorised the deployment of troops in Harold Wilson signed 1965 American Churchill FDC PM047M 150 SIR EDWARD HEATH Heath was Conservative Prime Minister from 1970 to In 1971, he introduced decimalisation and took the UK into the EEC in Heath tried to curb trade union power but his government was plagued by strikes. His decision to call a snap election in an attempt to win a mandate to take on the unions backfired after this resulted in a hung parliament. He was later challenged and defeated by Margaret Thatcher for the Conservative leadership. PM048C 80 Edward Heath signed 1973 European Community FDC JAMES CALLAGHAN Callaghan was Labour Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979 and is the only politician to have held all four Great Offices of State. Callaghan introduced the Race Relations Act, improved police transparency, and his education reforms paved the way for the National Curriculum. However, his government was severely weakened by the Winter of Discontent and in March 1979 he lost a vote of no confidence by 311 to 310 votes. PM049E 75 James Callaghan signed 75th Anniversary of the British Legion MARGARET THATCHER Thatcher was Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 and the longest-serving Prime Minister of the 20th century. The Iron Lady implemented sweeping economic reforms through deregulating the economy, introducing privatisation, and reducing trade union power. Her response to the Argentinian invasion of the Falkland Islands reenergised her waning popularity at home. However, her final years in office were marked by sharp opposition to the Poll Tax and she resigned after falling just short of the votes needed to defeat Michael Heseltine s leadership challenge. 45 SIR JOHN MAJOR Major was Conservative Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997 and the 14 million votes cast for his party in 1992 remains a British record. In foreign affairs Major entered Britain into the Gulf War, began the Northern Ireland peace Process, and signed the Maastricht Treaty. An economic crisis culminating in Black Wednesday and the exit from the ERM severely damaged Major s government and he resigned following a massive defeat at the 1997 election. PM051A 65 John Major signed 2005 Royal Squadron, Royal Wedding cover GORDON BROWN Brown was Labour Prime Minister from 2007 until His government s main priority from 2008 was dealing with the global recession in which several banks were nationalised with a rescue package totaling over 500 billion. His government s domestic policies were hampered by the crisis and persistent rumours of leadership challenges. His European policies saw him sign the Lisbon Treaty, committing Britain to greater integration. PM049F 200 Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, and James Callaghan signed American Bicentenary FDC PM052A 50 TONY BLAIR Blair was Labour Prime Minister from 1997 to His landslide victory in 1997 swept New Labour into power and Blair introduced the minimum wage, the Human Rights Act, the Freedom of Information Act, oversaw the beginning of devolution, and substantially increased spending on public services. 53 The Test Pilot Collection WE HAVE JUST THREE OF THESE COMPLETE COLLECTIONS IN STOCK This RAF collection commemorates some of the bravest men in aviation, though built by some of the great engineers it takes a special person to make the first flight in a plane which has never taken off before. This Special Signed collection of forty covers commemorates the British Test Pilots, Designers and Engineers. Group Captain Randle launched these in 1979 and was completed in 1984, it was very difficult to say no to him when it came to asking for a signature to raise funds for the RAF museum and this collection is no different. The signatures include Tom Sopwith, John Cunningham, Rowland Beamont, Jeffrey Quill, Brian Trubshaw, Alex Henshaw, Peter Twiss, Duncan Simpson, Neville Duke and Chuck Yeager, and this is just ten of the forty signatures in the collection! As you would expect from his covers, they are all flown with flight details, have well research insert cards and are certified. These were the men at the cutting edge of the history of flight, with each signature having a fantastic story. CCRAF07S 750 OFFER per month over 13 months CL181 53
