2 YOUR ARRIVAL Transfer to your resort When you have gathered together your luggage and are ready to head off into the city, please come to the Thomson desk in the arrivals hall and we will organise your transfer. From here, one of our Thomson Holiday Reps will make sure you get into a taxi safely and this will take you directly to your hotel in the city. This journey should take roughly 20 minutes. We will advise you then, what time you will need to be back at the airport on either Wednesday or Saturday respectively. For your return to the airport, please speak with the hotel to order a taxi for you to Salzburg airport. For this journey, please pay the taxi driver in cash and ask for a receipt ('rechnung' in German). Once you have arrived at the airport, please make your way to the Thomson desk in the arrivals hall, and you will be re-imburst for this taxi fare when producing the valid receipt. Please note that if you have arranged a twin centre holiday, your transfer to your second resort will depart from Salzburg airport. Check in and settle in When you arrive at your accommodation, it s usual for reception to request your passport. If you have any dietary requirements this is an ideal time to inform reception. Alternatively, you can contact us at aftersales@thomsonlakes.co.uk and we ll let your accommodation know before you arrive on holiday. Safety standards with regards to balconies differ in Austria. You may be staying in a room with a balcony that is lower than we would expect in the UK. Please take care when on the balcony and do not lean on or over the railings. Children aged 12 and under must be supervised and not left unattended on the balcony at any time. If you're staying in either a guesthouse, pension or small and friendly accommodation, please be aware that fire safety standards in Austria differ to those in the UK and the majority of these property types are not required to have a fire alarm. 5 YOUR RESORT Right now we're busy getting set-up for our next summer season. Some of the information on this page may be out of date and will be updated as soon as your Holiday Rep arrives in resort. This info is to help you get your bearings. You ll also find many of these places along with your accommodation marked on the resort map. Salzburg was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997, as it is steeped in culture, history and beautiful scenery. The city is famous for the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the setting for many scenes in the Sound of Music and also the backdrop of the High Salzburg Fortress. Banks and cash points There are banks located throughout Salzburg which tend to be open Monday to Friday, from 8.30am - 5pm. Cashpoints are dotted around Salzburg and accept all types of cards. These are open 24 hours a day, but be advised you will normally get charged by your bank for drawing out money. When you are out and about, you can spot the nearest cash point by looking for a "green and blue B sign". With the cashpoints they will automatically ask whether you would like the options in English. A top tip, is to choose the denominations of notes which you withdraw, this will save you carrying around 100 notes - plus not all cafes and shops will accept such a high denomination note. Bus station In Salzburg we don't use buses, we use a tram system. The main area where you would catch the trams from in Salzburg, would be from the end of Getreidegasse (main shopping street) or from the main train station. To locate the tram stops within the city, look out for the green and yellow signs. They generally run every 15minutes around the city. See Getting around for information on timetables. Church The cathedral is situated in the centre of Salzburg with lots of smaller churches throughout the city. Services in English are held at the Sacellum (behind the festival hall), but are not held weekly. Doctor If you require any medical or dental assistance, please contact your hotel reception as they will be able to best advise you of the nearest open practice for you, and will also help to arrange an appointment. Please note that in most cases you will be charged for any check-ups and treatment directly by the practice. Remember to ask for a receipt in order to claim this money back from your travel insurance when you arrive back in the UK. When visiting a doctor or dentist, remember to take 5/15

6 with you your passport, EHIC and insurance details. If you do require any medical attention we do request you let your Holiday Rep know, so that we can help with any queries you may have. Allergy Codes in Austria When eating out and about in resort, you may notice capital letters after each dish on a menu. These letters indicate what allergens the dish contains and will usually be accompanied by a key in German. To help speed up the ordering process for you, here are the English translations: A = Gluten B = Crustaceans (e.g. crabs, lobster, shrimps and crawfish) C = Eggs D = Fish E = Peanuts F = Soybeans G = Milk/lactose H = Nuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, hazel, cashew, pecan, Brazil, pistachios or macadamia nuts) L = Celery or Celeriac M = mustard N = sesame seeds O = Sulphites P = Lupines (e.g. seeds from the flower or lupin flour) R = Molluscs (e.g. mussels, oysters or snails) This is just a guide; we suggest highlighting your dietary requirements before ordering to confirm which dishes are suitable for you. Internet Internet access and terminals are usually available at your hotel with varying prices. It is normally cheaper to purchase a time block. There are also internet cafes available towards the outskirts of town and some cafes, such as McDonalds have free WiFi. Lifts for walkers If you are after a bit of walking during your city break, there are a great selection of city hikes available. These hikes can be as long or short as you like and lifts you can use are: Moenchsberg Lift - this will take you to the M32 restaurant and also the walking paths to the fortress and the Stadt Alm restaurant. All these places offer great views over the Old Town of Salzburg. 7 The Fortress Funicular this will take you directly into the fortress The opening times are: May and June: daily, 9am - 8pm July and August: daily, 9am - 10pm The Untersberg Cable car - this will take you to the top of the Untersberg mountain and is great for views over the whole Salzburg Lake District The opening times are: May - June: closed July and August: daily, 9am - 4pm See Getting around for more information on using the lift network for summer walking and the prices. Newsagent English language newspapers can be purchased in the local newsagents known as Tabak, but please note these are always a day old and are very expensive; they sometimes sell English language magazines and books.. There are newsagents located throughout Salzburg and are normally open the same time as the shops. Pharmacy Chemists are called Apotheke in Austria and are generally open 8am - 6pm. They are located throughout the city, please speak to the hotel reception, for details of the nearest one to your hotel. There will be a duty chemist open for emergencies outside these hours please ask at your hotel reception if required. Please see below the nearest pharmacy to your hotel: NH Salzburg: on Linzer Gasse opposite the SPAR supermarket. Altstadt Radisson: on the main road by river (parallel to Getreidegasse) Post office The main post office is loctaed at Residenzplatz 9 (just off Mozartplatz), and is open: Monday to Friday, 8am - 6pm Saturday, 9am - 12pm If you need to post any letters or postcards, stamps ('briefmarken' in German) can normally be bought from reception and you will find a post box either in reception or a short walk away. Post boxes in Austria are yellow. Railway station The main train station (Hauptbahnhof) is a 20 minute walk out of the city centre, on the northern side of the river past the Mirabell gardens. 7/15

Supermarket There are many supermarkets in Salzburg, probably the most central is Billa near to the Old Town, on the road looking towards the river. The supermarkets usually open daily Monday - Saturday from 8am - 8pm. If staying at the NH Salzburg, your closest supermarket is on the corner of Linzer Gasse, and offers a 'free from' section for those who have gluten or lactose intolerances. Tourist information The Tourist Information office is located in Mozart Platz and has maps of the city available, and you can also purchase your Salzburg cards from here. 9 GETTING AROUND Here are some basics to help you get around Salzburg and the surrounding area. Buses Timetables are available from the main bus stop at Mirabell gardens and from the tourist infomation office. All the bus stops will also have a timetable displayed. There are two bus companies operating in Salzburg, the ObusSLB/Albus & the Postbus. The ObusSLB/Albus is the city bus/tram. The following buses are free with the Salzburg card City buses 1-14 within the city limits Albus bus lines: Citybus A, lines 20-35, line 151 Postbus lines 32, 180, 170 to Rif/Taxach The city bus / Albus is great for getting around the city quickly, the routes can be seen on the route map here. And timetables are also available on the website at The website is in German, just click on the number of the route that you want the timetable for. You will then get a list of all the stops, to download the timetable click on the PDF entitled Fahrplan and the route number. The post bus connects Salzburg with lots of the local towns, a list of all the routes and timetables can be found at The buses and trams run daily, however Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays will have a reduced service. Ferries To take a local ferry is the most relaxing way to experience the city and enjoy its beauty. There are several companies operating river cruises, which can be booked through the many kiosks in the city. For information on the different river cruise tours available, please see this link. Taxis Salzburger Taxi: Taxi 2284: There are taxi ranks throughout the city, or you can ask your accommodation reception to call one for you. Trains The station is a 20 minute walk from the town centre. 9/15

10 Train tickets must be bought at the railway station where there are ticket offices and machines. If you are in a party of between 2 or 5 people, you can take advantage of the fantastic Einfachraus ticket. This entitles you to travel anywhere in Austria on local trains only (no intercity trains) between 9.30am and 2am the next morning. It is only 36 for all of your party, and makes a day out more affordable. This ticket must be bought from the train station ticket office or machines. When on the trains, the conductor will make his way around the carriage and ask to see your ticket. You must produce a valid ticket, otherwise he will issue you with an on the spot fine. 12 THINGS TO DO Salzburg card This great value card offers unlimited use of transport within the city, plus free entrance to many of the city's attractions and museums including Mozarts Birthplace, Hohensalzburg Fortress and funicular, Marionette Museum, HelbrunnCastle and many more. Sightseeing, museums and culture These are all within the town centre or are a short walk. Getreidegasse Make sure you take a walk along this famous street of Salzburg - not only as it is where you can find the birthpace of Mozart, but is it has been nicknamed the street of 1000 signs. Along this street, all the stores have wrought iron signs and the most expensive McDonalds sign in the world as it is made of pure gold. Mozart birthplace Visit the site where the legendary Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born, and see the collection of instruments he used to create his masterpieces. It is the yellow building which in the centre of Getreidegasse in Salzburg old town. Free entry with the Salzburg card. Adult 10, Child 3.50 Opening times (last entrance 30 minutes before closing): July & August: 8.30am - 7pm Stiegl Brauwelt (brewery) As Salzburg is the home of Stiegl beer, you will find the brewery in the city of Salzburg where 12/15

13 you can see how it is created and enjoy beer tasting, beer crackers and a souvenir inclusive in your admission price. From the old town of Salzburg, it is a 30 minute walk through the town and to the south of the river. One free entry with the Salzburg card Adult 11.50, Child 6.50 Opening times (last entrance 1hour before closing): May, June and September: 10am - 5pm July and August: 10am - 7pm Hohensalzburg fortress By taking a relaxing walk up or catching the funicular, you can reach the Salzburg fortress where you can take in the incredible views, enjoy the many restaurants or take in the history and culture at one of the many museums. If you want to walk up to the fortress, walk through the old town past the cathedral and then the walking path will be signposted using the yellow signs. If you wish to take the funicular up, walk through the old town past the cathedral to the base of the hill on munchsberg strasse. Free entry to fortress and funicular with the Salzburg card. Entrance to the fortress and the courtyards prices are below (without Salzburg Card): With funicular: Adult 12, Child 6.80 Opening times (last entrance 1 hour before closing): May - September: 9am - 7pm St Peter's church, cemetery and catacombs Here you can find the graves of Salzburg upper class, including Mozarts sister. See the catacombs carved into the rock face. This cemetery was used as an inspiration for the hiding scene in the Sound of Music. This is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Salzburg, and you can find it by walking past the front of the cathedral and around to the right hand side after the giant chess. Make sure before you enter, you take a step into the oldest bakery in Salzburg, with its water wheel outside. Furst Cafe This is where the first ever Mozart chocolate ball was made and they still stick to the original recipe. Master confectioner, Paul Furst, came to Salzburg in 1884 and opened his shop at 13 Brodgasse. He presented the Mozartbonbon for the first time in 1890, later producing it in 13/15

14 larger quantities as the Mozartkugeln. Furst's achievement was the production of the first perfectly rounded chocolate and the process and production has not changed to this day. These original chocolates are sold in silver and blue wrappers as oppose to the more commercially produced in red and gold. Sit back and relax here with a coffee and chocolate whilst enjoying the atmosphere of one of Salzburg's oldest cafes. You can find the cafe just through the archway from the farmers market and festival hall. Salzburg Zoo The zoo can be found at the base of the Hellbrunner mountain, and is home to over 800 animals or 140 different species. Walk around and see the animals from different corners of the world. The buses run every 20 minutes from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, and you'll need to catch bus 25. Free entry with the Salzburg card. Entrance prices: Adult 10.50, Child 4.50 The opening times for the summer can be found below (last entrance 1 hour prior to closing): June - August: daily, 9am pm Night Zoo in August: Friday and Saturday, 9am pm Local markets Great for photos, taking in the atmosphere and finding some delicious local produce for picnics. Daily Market Gruenplatz: Monday - Friday, 7am - 7pm, University square Saturday, 7am - 3pm, University square Weekly Evening Market: Thursday, 5pm - 1am, Mirabellplatz Events and concerts Salzburg festival, July 22nd - August 31st - a series of concerts from opera, drama, orchestra and contemporary in various locations throughout the city. Cafe Sacher This cafe offers a place to fine dine over afternoon tea, and is the home of the original Sachertorte - one of Austria's most delicous cakes. A must try during your stay. You can find the cafe as part of the Hotel Sacher just outisde of the Mirabell Gardens gates, where their terrace over looks the banks of the Salzach river. Open daily from 7.30am - midnight. K&K Located just off of Mozartplatz, this restaurant offers seasonal products within their meals and traditional Austrian cuisine. Perfect evening meal location for those staying at the Altstadt and Neutor hotels. Alte Fuchs Another regional restaurant, where you can enjoy the delights of meals prepared from locally produced ingredients. Found on the Linzer Gasse, this is a perfect evening meal location for those staying at the NH Salzburg Cafe Tomaselli The oldest Austrian Viennese coffee house in Salzburg, dating back to They have the choice of either the cafe building or the garden terrace and offer a great variety of dishes for all appetites.
